Michter's sour mash. tough to beat on my book. Michter's U.S. 1 Straight Bourbon Small Batch 91 proof is one of my top 3 fav bourbons. Used to be distilled close to me here in Shaefferstown, Pa. moved to Kentucky. It's heritage goes back to 1753, America's first distillery. barrels of it were supplied to Revolutionary war soldiers. George Washington purchased barrels of Shenk's and took them to Valley Forge for his troops. We also have America's oldest beer brewery Yuengling 15 miles away from us.

Here's one old timer that greatly underrated and unappreciated. Old Grandad. The 80, 86 is great as well as 100 & 114 although the 114 is a stiff. The 80 is about $18, the 86 about $19-20 and the 100 a bit more but still less than those $45-50 your touting. I don't remember what I paid for the 114 but I drank it sparingly. Take it from someone that's been drinking 'neat' for 55+ years and I've drank some doozies! The bottle shop I bought it at told me that I'd be surprised about how much of the 80 & 86 they sell. A best kept secret 👌 Of course OGD is now owned by Beam/Suntory as many distilleries are, even Ardmore single malt Scotch. "Old Grand-Dad is a brand of bourbon whiskey distilled at the Jim Beam Plant in Clermont, Kentucky." As a new subscriber I see in your May 12th edition that you featured OGD bonded 100 also an excellent drop. It's a little more than $20 where I bought it but that's probably because of the state taxes. 😕 I do remember buying it in the rear package liquor stores in Vietnam when I was there in '67. Usually not much of a selection left on the shelves as all the 'popular' brands were bought up such as JD, JB, etc.
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
To be honest I have never tasted the 80 or 86 ogd. Need to do that soon. Appreciate your detailed info!
@skipperclinton10872 жыл бұрын
@@slbdrinks I have a friend in AZ that loves his bourbon and buys the brands like Knob Creek, etc. Last time I visited him I bought a bottle of OGD 80 & 86 and he was really impressed, so much so that he now stocks his own home bar with it and drinks it regularly and has become his go to whiskey. The 114 is a real breath taker but has a great taste/flavor but for me it's something I drink sparingly. I brought a bottle back with me (Phnom Penh) in 2019 and finished it about a year ago. As far a Scotches go, I moved to Thailand 20 years ago and bourbons are real hard to come by but Scotches are readily available so I didn't have much choice and I never liked it either. It's an aquired taste and stories I could tell you about it too. In VN at the package liquor stores all that was left on the shelf was J. Black. Mix it with coke and it isn't bad! JB white label and standard JD was the only choices and the JB is just passable but I don't now nor ever did like JD. I'm now in Phnom Penh and the bourbon selection is slightly better but as for everywhere else in SE Asia Scotches rein Supreme. The best IMHO is Bowmore 12. $30 a bottle and yes I understand you prefer higher octane bourbons/Scotches but the next jump is $55+ and most are 80's anyway and there are only half a dozen at best to choose from. I drink "responsibly" (two bottles in two days) so I can't afford the higher priced brands. I don't do that everyday, Just once every 6-8+ weeks. So thank you for responding to all my various comments, I find that a rarity.

Kurt you probably don't want to hear anything from me anymore but I thought I heard you mention something about getting into tequilas at some point. Yep, I spent probably 5-7 years going down that path and into the expensive brands ($15-20 a shot) that were only selling the expensive looking bottle but I do have a recommendation. Jose Cuervo Reservea De LA Famila. The first taste I took I had to look again to see if it was really tequila. Aged in oak so long I thought it was bourbon. At the time I bought it in '98 it was $50, quite affordable. Now it's $170 way above my pay grade. As a bartender I met others that worked in very upscale restaurants and so I'd get a discount. I also spent a month down in Cabo San Lucas and had a friend & fellow drinker that lived in Baja and he knew the hotspots so I started and the bottom shelf out of 5 and worked my way up to the top. The Cuervo is definitely a "sipping" tequila, something I thought was impossible. Sorry about urinating in your Cheerios!

No worries sir, I have enjoyed our conversation. Tequila is brand new to me speaking of sipper quality. I have learned a lot in a short period of time. I love to find tequilas with no additives, very pure and unadulterated. Thank you for your recommendation!

@@slbdrinks Kurt I deserve the reply you gave me so I apologize. Now, just for the record, ever since I was old enough to drink legally I've drank in blue collar bars. The comments I made on those whiskies were (Fitzgerald, Old Forester, etc) from recommendations that were from drinkers far older than I and yes I've tried them myself but only in a shooter. I've also started at the bottom and worked my way up drinking. From the age of 17-19 I was stationed on a ship homeported in Japan. I wasn't old enough to buy at the exchange so I had to buy the local whiskies. Tory's was the bottom shelf Suntory @ .85 a bottle. Suntory was $1.85 so when you're only making $80 a month you have to do what you're forced to do. This is how rotgut the Tory's was. Every once on a while I could get a petty office of age to buy me a bottle of Seagrams 7. I could turn it upright and guzzle/gulp it because it was so smooth compared to the Tory's. That Cuervo I recommend to you, start there and maybe work your way down. It's always nice to know what the top is first. You'll be pleasantly surprised, I know I was and if it was available and not so expensive I'd love to treat myself again. I used to live next door to a salesman for a liquor distributor in a capital city. Once in awhile he'd invite me over for some 'sample tasting'. I've drank some very expensive Scotches including Japanese ones that were so far out of my pocketbook that I'd never even give them a glance. So bottom line it irks me a bit when I see some of those whiskies that you've shown to the uninitiated because if it's a first it might just turn them off altogether. 🤔 You're a good host and your backbar is quite impressive! BTW, I've owned a couple myself including in Thailand because I've had plenty of experience on both sides of one. Whiskey, it's not just for breakfast anymore! 😋

Tincup is pretty easy to drink. I'm female, so I like something smooth without a huge bite.

I wasn’t aware that Tin Cup wasn’t a bourbon. I find the whole bourbon/whiskey category very confusing!

Michter's "Sour Mash" always seemed really silly to me. All their whiskey is sour mash. Virtually ALL whiskey distilled in the US is sour mash. Peerless and Wilderness Trail are 2 sweet mash distillers, but I don't know any others. Of course Old Elk is good, Look at their master distiller. Greg Metze was crushing whiskey at MGP for decades. Nice lineup.

Why are these a whisky but not bourbon. Is it a lower corn content? What is it missing or how is it different than a similar bottle that is a bourbon??
@pyotrilyichtchaikovsky37332 жыл бұрын
Could be not 51% corn but could also be not aged in new american oak or both
@slbdrinks2 жыл бұрын
Correct answer from our friend here. Could be multiple reasons but bourbons has to be at least 51% corn and aged in new American oak barrels. That’s the short and sweet explanation.
@TheMNbassHunter2 жыл бұрын
From what I can tell Tincup 10 is just MGP high rye bourbon cut down with Rocky Mountain water. The website doesn't say anything about the addition of Stranahan's in the 10 year as it does for the standard offering. Various websites seem to disagree on this point. Some say it does have Stranahan's while others say it does not and could actually be labeled bourbon even though it isn't.

I wish all releases would be transparent on all levels. So much easier to be a responsible buyer that way.
