WHAT IS STAR DELTA CIRCUIT?
A star-delta (Δ) circuit, also known as a Wye-Delta circuit, is a method used to connect electric motors for starting and running. This configuration is commonly employed in industrial settings where motors need to be started with reduced voltage to limit the initial current and torque. The star-delta configuration involves two main steps in the motor operation: starting in the star (Y) configuration and then switching to the delta (Δ) configuration for continuous running.
Here's a brief overview of the two configurations:
1. Star (Y) Configuration:
In the star configuration, the motor windings are connected in a Y-shaped pattern.
Each winding is connected to one of the three phases of the power supply.
This results in a lower voltage across each winding, which reduces the starting current and torque.
2. Delta (Δ) Configuration:
Once the motor has reached a certain speed (usually around 80% of its full speed), it is switched to the delta configuration.
In the delta configuration, the motor windings are reconfigured into a triangle shape.
This connection increases the voltage across each winding, allowing the motor to run at full speed.
The transition from star to delta configuration is typically achieved using a switching device such as a contactor. The switch is operated automatically by a timer or a control system after the motor has had sufficient time to accelerate in the star configuration.
The star-delta starting method helps in reducing the inrush current during motor starting, which is beneficial for both the electrical system and the motor itself. It also provides a smooth and controlled acceleration, minimizing the mechanical and electrical stress on the motor. This method is commonly used for large induction motors in applications such as water pumps, compressors, and fans.
