When my hair was loose this is how I made a ponytail. To mitigate the bulge slick the the middle ponytail. Slick it up with gel and put a holder on it. Next follow your same steps. Don’t remove the center ponytail holder. You will put a second one around it. What makes this nice is that you can get a slick ponytail tail without it having to be super tight.

Nice! I really want to try this once my hair grows back. I cut it a few months ago due to damage. I want to try putting my puff in exactly as you did, by grabbing small sections at a time. I tried putting my hair in ponytails a lot when my hair was longer and I always got that bulge. I hated it and just gave up on trying to wear them.
