Orange Amplifiers caught up with Matt Pike before Sleep's sold out show at the Kentish Town Forum in London. Matt discusses his influences and how he uses lots of amplifiers to create a wall of sound.

If you do any research, those matamps that him and Al were always using constantly had issues. Not to mention, the matamps of today are not made by the same people, nor are they owned by the same people. Dave Green is the guy that was making those gt120s for them. From what I hear, the new gt120s are more modern voiced than the ones you recognize. Let's also not forget that the gt120 was essentially a souped up or120 and a lot of the newer oranges are closer in tone to those or120s than you'd imagine. You can get the dopesmoker tone without the amp saying green on it. Just see them live and you'll get it. He's also using a plethora of effects pedals. He's got a new fuzz/boost coming out with black arts, and he's using a couple lone wolf audio pedals for his dirt too. Amps are nice and all, but he gets a lot of his dirty sound from a combination of his hands and the pedals he's pushing those amps with.

zakkeryc Matt has had issues with every amp. As an owner of two Dave Green-era Matamps they are problematic. However I will strongly disagree that when he had the Matamp stacks it sounded radically different than he does now with those Oranges or his Soldano or any of that. I rehearse just a few rooms over from High On Fire/Sleep at the Oakland music complex and I've been seeing them for years, the tone isn't close. That being said, they're also finally working on new material.

Dude, when I saw Sleep for the first time I thought "wow, this dude has a lot of dummy cabinets and shit" but when the Dragonaut riff hit my face I started to melt. Being first raw at a Sleep concert is amazing. I'm not a guitarist, I play drums and when I go to concerts I focus a little bit more on the drumming, but Matt made me forget that Sleep have a drummer and a bassist/vocalist. I was so fascinated by his playing and by the tones that those Orange amps produced... Jeez...

Aonghus MacCready green amps weren't discovered by sleep until 1993 during a uk tour. Sleep's Holy Mountain was recorded with Laney AOR's, Hiwatts and Matt also had a blonde Fender head but I'm not sure what model it was.

My old band was recording our album at Razors Edge with Billy Anderson at the same time he was working on Holy Mountain and we did quite a few shows with Sleep around that time and they didn't get the Green's till after that album had been finished and released and I don't remember anything by Orange in Matt's rig.

PIKE IS GOD!!! Matt pike is hands down the guitar hero of GenX and even into the millennials. He comes from the ideologies and tones of the old school i.e. Sabbath, Zeppelin, CREAM, LeafHound, etc. Mixed with the appreciation for newer genres such as metal when it comes to gain and it’s mixed with classic fuzz sounds. He plays riffs not just parts for the sake of making up Parts to be faster and heavier than other bands. He plays with a certain groove and soul. Anyways I won’t go on forever but I believe a Gibson Les Paul through multiple full stacks with fully loaded cabs says it all. PIKE IS GOD!!!!!!!!

When we interviewed Matt he discussed using different sets of amplifiers such as Rockerverbs as his main tone, taking into account certain frequencies and then layering Dual Darks on top for the more treble type frequencies and then usually Thunderverbs to gain bass frequencies. He brings these amps in at different points of songs to add dynamics to his playing. Hope this helps, Matt is such an interesting guy to chat to about amplifiers and how he uses them to add dynamics.

Back in the early days of High on Fire, I saw them play a handful of times, & before one of those shows, I was talking to Pike outside the venue & he told me that the amp he used the night before (a Matamp) had blown out during their set. Said he was glad that the van was stocked w/ more Matamps. About halfway through their set that night, you know what happened? Another one blew. Ha! He had to go out to the van to grab another.
