This song isn't written about courting someone else, it's all about self acceptance. It's written from the perspective of the singer singing to his own reflection in the mirror, asking if he actually wishes he loved himself, which has some really deep connotations considering the relationship between both pain/fame and the whole concept of the masked persona that the lead singer embodies within the sort of mythos of the band itself. It's tragically beautiful both in concept and execution.

It has multiple perceptions, its also about someone who has alexithymia, the inability to describe your emotions or struggling to feel emotions, hes asking someone else, or himself if they wished they could love him despite not being able to love him, obviously self reflection within the song, like turning into a stranger if he could, but I think it could be talking to himself and another person at the same time

@@Dookla while I certainly agree that this song can be interpreted in multiple ways, after all interpretations are largely subjective by there very nature. (Only reason I say largely, is some equivocation can be made when the author gives their own interpretation or what they hoped to express when writing the piece.) But I do believe that the combination of the background vocals in the line, "Can you ever forgive (yourself)" And the combination of the line "And my reflection just won't smile back at me like I know it should." With the background vocals accompanying the repetition of the songs name "Do you wish that you loved me?" (Smile back) "Do you wish that you loved me?" (At me) Do heavily imply that the song is being sung to the singers reflection in the mirror. That's not to say interpreting the song as being sung to someone else is by any means wrong. And I definitely do agree that there's a theme in the song questioning whether his or the others lack of emotions is just a defense mechanism or the actual inability to experience those emotions (also questioning whether the latter maybe preferable to the former). My main reason for leaning so much more heavily into the song being about the self is the way it fits into the persona/mythos of the band, and the concept of the anonymous masked singer. As well as the way it also parallels a common tension in creative people where pain inspires creation, while they seek healing/comfort in that process of creation. Which often leads to a fear that if they did succeed in escaping the pain, what would that mean for their creativity? And would that exchange be worth it? Or have they come to value the success/acclaim their creativity has brought them, more than the idea of not hurting anymore.

The moment this song clicked for me and I realised that (at least in my interpretation of it), it's him singing at himself in the mirror, some of the lines in this suddenly cut so much deeper.

I like the moment the title is realized. Guys, the beauty of music is the lyrics are open to interpretation. It works whether it's about loving yourself or wishing that someone else loves you. 🖤

The song isn't about anyone else. This song is Vessel looking in the mirror talking to himself. This is the song that is a letter to your inner side. To your shadow self, if you will. This is the song that is dedicated to the side of you that you YOURSELF don't like.

Honestly, the most beautiful and raw song I've ever heard to this day is by Sleep Token, a song called Blood Sport (from the room below) It has a studio version but the (from the room below) version is a song that's so beautiful it can make you cry. I would love to hear your opinions on it so hope to see a reaction to it someday.

"I can't give to you what I cannot give myself" man, ain't that the truth. When I finally figured that out, it was a revelation. How the hell can you love anyone else if you don't love yourself? I think we all confuse loving someone else with loving that person. I know that sounds weird. what I mean is... I think most people love the "idea" of their partner... they don't love their partner... because they don't know what that is, until you truly love yourself... then you figure it out.. and you can love a person, not the idea of them. How many of us went through so many bad relationships just because we'd rather have someone than be alone? I found out when I started loving myself.. being alone wasn't so bad. And because of that, my latest relationship is so much better. both of us were fine being by ourselves... so we both chose to be with the other... and we still do. I rally hope Vessel stops wishing and just figures it out, and loves himself.

there are a lot of parts in this album that sound like one of my fave recents secrets, " Punchline ". They write music just like this! sonics are slightly different, but a lot of the emotional concepts in sound design are the same! great stuff!

It was already stated, but the song is about self-love and self-hate...my partner vibes with this song due to his abusive upbringing. He can't comprehend feelings because he had to turn them off for so long, and the face he sees in the mirror infuriates him. He wants to mutilate it until it looks like what he sees in his mind's eye. He hates photos because he doesn't want to look at himself. I do hope you take another listen on your own time, and feel this meaning. That said, it seems like maybe you started grasping it a bit at the end. As for the next song you should listen to...there's so many good ones, but: The Night Does Not Belong To God --- a much softer song, but this song made me fall in love with the band Jaws - I empathize with this song a lot, personally Blood Sport - a very emotional song --- Listen to, but don't do a react video, on 'When The Bough Breaks' --- it's a nice song, but not something easy to do a reaction video on Euclid --- ONLY LISTEN AFTER you listen to these four, if you truly want to appreciate all its references If you listen to it after, it will hit you like a truck with feelings, and you'll LOVE it.

the lyrics seems to me that he is actually talking about and to himself. My reflection just won't smile back at me like i know it should. Is he looking in the mirror and not liking himself? I really don't know as I don't know the band but been going down the rabbit hole of this album for a few days now!! its a masterpiece of an album.
