Sleepboot vastgelopen Zandvoort strand

A tugboat from Scheveningen got stranded at the beach of Zandvoort.
It was here to help to get a fishing trawler loose which got stuck at south beach of Zandvoort. During the operation the towing line got stuck in the propellor of the towboat.
After attempts of the KNMR of Zandvoort a boat of KNMR of Noordwijk came to help but also they did not succeed.

That rescue crew demonstrated some of the best boat handling you will ever see. Complicated by surf, high wind, shallow water and the towline. Really exceptional!

I don't. Very poor salvage skills. A waterjet driven boat has no pulling power. It's made for speed. Towing in the surfzone is showing no skills of towing/salvage. The little power of the jets are now for most used to keep the rescue boat in position and hardly pulling on the stranded vessel. The danger of the towline snapping and wounding, or worse, the life boat crew, is very high in this manoeuvre where most of the crew are seen in the danger zone. Very poor understanding of the risks. The accident happened close to a major port where proper tugs are available. The rescue boat should only have been used to make a long (up to outside the surf/danger) tow connection to such tug and then it would have been an easy, and safe, job to bring the stranded vessel back in deep water. I am an retired Dutch ex- seagoing tug captain and I am ashamed to see so much amateurism shown in this picture. We Dutch were once the tugboat and salvage experts of the world but in looking at this that seems to be all past us..😢

I’m a boatman in the UK and unfortunately the RNLI have become glory hunters.. a large pleasure cruiser went aground in a river near where we were work and I arrived on the scene 5 mins before the lifeboat.. I told them I would stand by and that I’m happy to put a rope on her and pull her off.. I was in a much larger steel working boat with a much powerful marine diesel and they insisted they would tow her off on their own in a rib with two outboards. Anyway, after 20mins of pulling on a falling tide they decided they couldn’t do it on their own.. we connected up and slowly pulled her back into the water.. it would have been much easier and less stress on the fiberglass boat if they just took our offer in the first place.. no, they had to be the ones to pull her off the bank!! Sad really but I guess that’s human nature.

You've got to admire their optimism and persistence. Put an anchor out for the tug and come back at high tide.

Many years ago I lost almost my ship when I anchored in front of Castel Plage, at that time a popular beach restaurant. Knowing the particular situation very well, in spite of that the sudden weather change landed me in the midst of breaking waves. So, keep in mind that the NorthSea in front of Zandvoort is a rather tricky place to be. Weather can change from dead calm within 25 minutes to a gale force 8. Second to that, a rib, or even a big rib, is far to light weighted to tow a heavy steelboat. I know that by experience.

Mooi gezicht en wat een golven. Uiteraard kon je wel verwachten dat zo'n bootje de sleepboot niet loskrijgt. Ben benieuwd

Ben ook benieuwd wanneer ze worden blot getrokken. Vandaag waarschijnlijk niet door onstuimig weer, ik was er vanochtend 😬

Je weet nooit of het lukt. Als het water net hoog genoeg komt kon die reddingsboot hem net vlot trekken

Ha,ha,ja met een rubberbootje in dergelijke zeegang= 50 % schroef boven water een loodzwaar stalen schip die muurvast dan nog achtersteven verkeerd in het zand ligt…..keep on dreaming!!

I would have thought that they needed to have the tow line extended much further out so they could be beyond the surf line. Trying to tow against breaking waves is an uphill battle.

All that wind and none of the wind turbines were turning, very inefficient. Would be like owning a fleet of buses that couldn’t be used when they were most needed.

Als ex-kapitein van diverse Nederlandse salvage companies van de vorige eeuw vindt ik dit een beschamend amateuristische operatie waarbij de bemanning van de reddingsboot is onstsnapt aan mogelijk fatale ongelukken door bv. het breken van de sleeptros. Dit is een schoolboek voorbeeld van hoe NIET een schip van het strand te trekken. Absoluut amateuristisch!

Hoge waterstand en storm vanavond vrijdag 24. Die kotter op dieper water + sleepboot zou moeten lukken. Mooie beelden, ruig.

if they were to put the tow on the front of the tug and pull the bow round into the waves which has less resistance than the stern that may have got it out

In Dutch we say ‘De beste stuurlui staan aan wal’. This means the best captains are on shore. I have great respect for these men at sea. The crew of the KNRM are all volunteers 😯😊

Ik heb geen zeevaartschool doorlopen en/ of natuurkunde gestudeerd maar dat dit niet zou gaan lukken stond voor mij als de bekende paal boven water. Daarbij komt dat ik dit geen taak vind voor de KNMR, waar ik overigens al jaren donateur van ben. Verspilling brandstof en onnodige slijtage materieel.

What if you put an anchor about where the tow was and use a snatch block to pull from the shore?

Probably 400-500hp on that rib with twin jets. A lot of pull but tough in that surf and that Oceaan II is a lot of ship. If they had a longer line to get out to a bigger tug that might have done it. Mad respect for a great try.

A rib with jets, even if 500hp, wouldn't even been able to pull a small yacht of the beach in such a swell. Jets are good for speed, not for power. This was one of the most stupid salvage attempts I have seen in my life. And I only workde 30 years in the industry... Amateurs and the crew of the SAR rib actually escaped serious accidents.

@rudypuister9331 it depends on the jet design. The US army has 500hp twin jets set up as shallow water bridge erection tugs. 26ft boat with top speed of 20mph. That said, in that chop any prop will cavitate. It would be impossible to pull anything out without another 200-300meters of line no matter what boat.

@@advancedusvsystems6255 You won't find a tugboat in the world, or any vessel that need sheer power at slow steaming, equiped with jets. Jets are for high speed and shallow draft. Ideal for rescue craft that need to be fast, high manoevrable and working in shallow surf zone. Once in deep water any propellor driven boat with the same horse power will walk a way with a jet driven boat it both are of similar design with similar engine power available.

@rudypuister9331 I can assure, having owned one, that these do exist and are highly sought after at salvage by the marine construction market, at least in the US, precisely because of strong performance providing high thrust propulsion in shallow water environments.

Mooie filmwerk Jorg 👍 V.w.b. deze bergingsactie, was dit nu het beste sleepbootje wat beschikbaar was? Ligt dat sleepbootje even later ook droog op het strand.... Prutsers!
