So many things to say i may forget some and come back to edit, but we really appreciate you both. The reason why, i think i can safely say we here, we enjoy what you both have to say and want/ask for more, we could listen to you both for hours and gain so much insight, thoughtful points, but also want to hear more about your own experiences. You do have unique pov as artists yourselves, as men of colour, particularly in America and within the industry. We know all too well the difficulties faced by the members but also you both too. We appreciate all that it has taken for you all to get to where you are now. I would LOVE to hear that podcast and hear what you have to say on that matter. And all matters too. Incredibly intelligent, experienced, skilled, talented and good men, and I'm not just talking about BTS, but you both as well. I appreciate the time you take to share with us Deezy, the time you both spare to immerse into the music and also share your own personal experiences when thoughts are provoked. It's really good to see the representation. It's such a nice space we are nurturing here, i hope you both know, well I'm sure Deezy you know it, but Varnell you are welcome. It's all love, no hate. Looking forward to hearing your music and what we've learnt about you through this has me intrigued and curious. I will be checking all your works out that you're willing to share with us. As a fandom we do appreciate good artistry, we are an eclectic bunch that came together in appreciation of the honouring of not only music but our collective humanity too. It was an interesting point about wanting to hear contrasts and more of a human relatability and inspiration in people's music. It really is appreciated. A lot of us have wide musical tastes and hip hop is certainly one of them, you might be surprised to learn all the other influences too Varnell, you'll learn with time. I know i know, the lyric squad gets on your back, but you really will gain so much depth from watching the lyrics play alongside hearing ahead. It's worth it. There are tons of bars, but also thinking points and reflective moments that make you pause and self reflect at times too. If anyone reacting could appreciate that well, it would certainly be you. (recurring viewer here on the tv, not signed in which i suspect lots of other viewers in that demographic show up as not subscribers but i am on multiple accounts) You're part of the fam, you have our support. Good luck on the trips and at work, have a safe journey back home. I do look forward to seeing more content from you guys, i really enjoy listening to what you have to say. I'm so glad that it's become a creative outlet for you Deez, your editing skills are 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 also 😂

Now there is definite truth in this statement! Yoongi is so raw and authentic. He is the guy that has faced his shadow. He has a hard exterior with a mushy inside. Plus he produces music and raps like a beast. Plays piano and makes you cry. Who wouldn’t want to marry a man like that!

Thank you, Sleep and Varnell! So excited for Varnell’s discovery and exploration of D-Day. Sleep, have you considered watching the dvd of Yoongi’s live tour? For the longest time, my live experience of Kendrick’s Damn tour was one of my favorite concert experiences. D-Day live in Oakland (barricade GA) was other worldly. Yoongi is a phenomenal stage performer. Thanks again for taking us to school. Headed to upgrade my sub on that other app. Apobangpo.✨💜✨

If you read the book they say during training RM was like Jack Black in School of Rock but School of Rap. The younger members laughing explain how he had tears in his eyes, begging them saying " how can you be singers and not know your music. He compiled music and begged them to listen to it. He would sit them in front of all the greats saying "see that wasnt that really cool". All the vocal line say they were influenced by the Rap line who already knew the culture.

“they’ve studied the essence of hip hop” this is sooo important. Rapline but most importantly RM really made sure BTS listen to hip hop so that they really understand music. It’s actually a system their label uses now to train their future artists - listening to different genres of music to expand the music knowledge.

I think it's really cool that they saw what RM & the rapline did with making sure the other members were well versed in music of all genres and implemented that into their training system. I feel like some other kpop companies have a control/ego problem where they are so set in their ways they don't think they can learn anything directly from the idols themselves, they know better cuz they've been in the industry for so many years and are older so they are not very open minded to learn from them. What I keep thinking about too is RM would have all the members freestyle rap just randomly for fun vocal line too and I remember watching old Bangtan Bombs of them doing that. And they talked about just randomly doing it like at the dinner table someone would ask hand me this or that and they'd respond with rhymes or launch into a brief rap battle.

You want to be soft, okay we love soft...you want to talk your shit...We will SHIBAL with the best of them!!! Varnel DO NOT underestimate ARMY or what "ladies" actually like. We love great music, we love authenticity, we love music with messaging but we can also just be there for the vibes. BTS/members gives us all of this in spades. Actually Boracity has a great video essay on this topic (kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKHdgpJ8mL9shsksi=i6sTDEJE1hXB02z9), and just like how the Beatles were disrespected and looked down on by media and the gp bc their audience was primarily women, but once men actually tuned in and "discovered" that their music was quality THEN they became respected, etc. Beware of what your preconceived notions of BTS' primarily female audience is based on. There's also Ch.21 of Rise of Bangtan (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWi4fGSFbKqkrbcsi=IBj9XJmCn9Fu5j5l) that is focused on the mutual respect and deep understanidng that BTS has for their audience, being completely aware of how we are dismissed or called "crazy" because we are women and how they intentionally reword questions in order to avoid that association.

This. There were a few key things that solidified me as an army for life back in 2016-17. One of them was definitely listening to this album, especially The Last and So Far Away with the lyrics and relating a little too hard to his line about going to see the psychiatrist with his parents who said they barely knew him. Another was hearing and seeing them defend us over and over again, to local and international interviewers, even Joon, adjusting translations to the members to rephrase questions that painted us as mindless and obsessive, yoongi talking to the other members about how because they are “idols” he’s afraid that the fans would be shamed or made fun of, the line in the last; my fans hold your heads up high, who does as much as me. I have to include the fact that they are such dedicated students of music, and never fail to highlight, credit and support the (often black) artists that influence and inspire them. And when they discover an area that they aren’t so learned in, they do everything to educate themselves. They did it with American hustle life. The gender sensitivity proofreaders that joon said he seeks out. They are always learning and growing.

I especially loved the artists who really had something to say like Public Enemy, Arrested Development, Iced Tea, Tupac, etc. But honestly, as a woman, I began to feel unwelcome in hip hop spaces, bored by the same topics going around and around without really adding to the conversation and the rampant negativity. I don’t care how much money you have (whatever, I know that Ferrari in the video was rented) or how many chicks you can bang. Where is the creativity? For every Kendrick Lamar, there are 40 boring ass rappers bragging over the same old shit. Ctrl +C, Ctrl +V. Don’t they even care that they are alienating huge audiences? Anyway, I say this because BTS has made me love hip hop again, and many ARMY feel the same way. BTS speaks truth to power in the way the best of hip hop does. They write deep, intelligent, emotional lyrics that audiences, even a middle-aged white woman in America, can relate to. And while they do brag a bit about their success, everything they say is well-earned and the truth. And even their diss tracks have an underlying positivity and humility. Take Ddeng for example. Yes, this song is responding to haters, but in the end, it is a positive song about celebrating success and ignoring the noise of jealous antis.

THISSSSSS!...... I am a 61 year old white woman that was really into early hip hop and i too felt the same as you... BTS gave me what i was looking for... rap line, vocal line, multiple genres, live band performances... intelligent and meaningful bars upon bars.... and The Last is actually the song that helped me with my struggle with depression and self loathing. lets say it was the catalyst. i was already sticking my toes in the rabbit hole when i found this song... and i havent left and i never will.

There is no one more vulnerable on stage than Agust D. His whole history and heart and pain and success and fear is in his music, and he serves it up to us like a gift. Talking about mental health is a tough sell anywhere, but in SK it was particularly taboo. Min Yoongi put it all out there in his Agust D songs, and then GAVE them away. (His first two mixtapes were free SoundCloud releases.) I personally know dozens of ARMYs (I'm sure there are more like thousands) who credit THE LAST with literally saving their lives. They were able to find their way out of that darkness because Agust D's music took them by the hand and let them know they weren't alone there, that survival-- even triumph-- was possible. I was at his first concert of his tour in NY, and he performed "The Last" as the very last song-- the final encore. By that time we had all screamed and sang ourselves hoarse, and I think the drummer and Yoongi himself were the only people in the entire stadium who had sat down for the last two hours. We weren't even sure he was going to perform it live, and the entire stadium went crazy when we heard the opening bars. There was special power in hearing him rap "The heads of thousands nodding to my hand gesture" in front of a sold-out arena of ARMYs who knew every step of his journey, back to the kid who had to choose between food and bus fare because the guys buying lyrics he'd written had ripped him off.

@varnellHill Sleep made a good point about Suga and RM talking back to the rap and hip hop haters who were jealous of them finding success with a K-pop label. But the other side of this is that BTS was getting hate from the K-pop side too. They were from a small label, they didn’t have a lot of money, and no influence. They were mocked for their name, their “concept” and their looks (if you can imagine). They fought for every step forward and every success. That is why they appreciate ARMY as much as they do. And that’s why we love to hear them talk that sh….stuff. :)

AgustD's AgustD and RM's Joke are, to me, their reponse to those mediocre Korean rappers who basically called them 'girls' because they became idols with make up on (not true rappers) when they joined BTS. The way Bangtan has to reply to ignorant bullies is by talking their shit on a song that not only speaks truths about those FOOLS that try to bully them but that also PUTS THEM IN THEIR PLACE through the clear musical superiority of the song. Their flow alone would shut them up already. But then they add the beat, the bars and the DELIVERY and all their bullies cry and go back to their mommas. At least, that's how I see it.

About "The Last" Yoongi has been honest about having depression episodes or panic attacks that stop him from even going out to stage. Once, it hit just after a presentation that he could not attend, then went to tw (and in his lyrics for Young Forever) about how he went to that same venue after not being able to show/give his best to the fans. he made a promise to himself to find his ground and peace. This song is deep and hard bc of the beat, the lyrics and that promise: "my fans, my homies, keep your heads up cuz who is doing as much as I do/have done as much as I?". He's a man of words and a man of his word, who worked his a$$ off to grown and be his best version each time. (In fact in Daechwita & Haegeum, there's this theory that every time you see him sh00ting or k!lling himself, he's fighting against these past versions or parts of himself to build a new one, better if suited, new for sure, but always embracing that he's not a monolith and static person/a. He's him at that moment, but he also was and might be different later too).

This album, as with anything they do, did not come out of a vacuum. Yoongi had a lot of sh to process and late december 2015 he was unable to perform cos of his mental health. He came on twitter early January and wrote a long thread about going back to the venue a few weeks later to kinda try to understand the feelings of the audience waiting, and of himself. That letter is still on their twitter, as a testament to how earnestly and seriously he takes this relationship between them and ARMY. All of that culminated in this mixtape. Man, I had never thought I'd see the day he would perform The Last, and then he just went and did it for every single show of the D-Day tour- and I got to see him perform it. Yeah man. We go hard for these guys. Cos they go hard for us, and our relationship. In this Bora shit for life.

The way he hand wrote little messages and made party favors for the ones who came to his bday celebration, to the tenderness he called us his loves(before the fandom was named), to him keeping a small fan note as a bookmark and he casually saying he wants to grow old with us. His radio show during the pandemic helped me survive such uncertain times. Agust D’s “Agust D” and his “D2” saved my life. Seriously, I was lost, completely lost, numb, no longer caring about anything, just waiting for it to end, and was pretty close, when I stumbled on Daechwita. It caught my attention. From there I found his two albums, particularly The Last, Moonlight, Interlude: Set Me Free, and I slowly came back to life. Yoongi’s music, it touched something in me, it’s so expressive, he expressed the emotion for me that I couldn’t until I finally could. I’m not very eloquent, but I would not be here without him. I cried during The Last at each of the 4 concerts on his solo tour that I was able to make. Whenever the numbness sets in, I reach for Agust D and Jimin’s FACE - Jimin’s extremely good at expressing the emotion through his music as well - and I remember why it’s worth living. I very much appreciate your deep diving into BTS’ music. Thank you for giving your time and expertise and thoughtfulness to this endeavor.

I'm glad TPAB gets it's flowers now but some people was playing in that man's face at first. Agust D was an incredible debut project. And you're right, his music is perfect for us to get the anger and aggression out when we scream out the lyrics with him. It's cathartic. Yoongi really is pretty open with us in his music so we feel emotionally bonded to him on a level. So when the media and haters try to fuck with him, we come out in droves for him. i usually don't comment much but some of the points on this one made me smile so i had to say a little something - this might be long oops . just so varnell know there are many army who were hip hop fans first, and for me in particular i'm an hip hop old head. genx (48) born and raised new yorker, i like to tell people i was raised alongside hip-hop instead of raised 'on hip-hop'. so even though i am not black i know, love and respect the culture, because i lived in it. hip-hop has always been a part of my life. that being said i was really iffy with the whole 'kpop' phenomenon a few years back. just know i was side-eyeing it hard, especially because every group had a 'rapper' . i had gotten into a few heated discussions with some kpop fans because i told them their rappers really aren't rappers because they don't write their own raps. needless to say they were offended. and then i found out about bts - yes i was skeptical. don't get me wrong i'm a MUSIC fan. i listen to just about everything because i have eclectic tastes so yeah i liked some boyband sh*t in the past. good pop can be great. (new edition were my guys). anyway i went in with an open mind and then i found out their rappers wrote their raps, and that the lyrics weren't all nonsense or some bs stereotype of hip-hop and black culture. when i discovered rm and suga were actually underground hip-hop artists i was a bit impressed. i soon realized their vocalists were just so diverse in sound, and their dancing was actually good. finding out jhope was a street dancer made so much sense to me. the principles of hip-hop at play and ingrained in the band from day one. finding out they produce, compose , and actually knew their hip-hop history was just the icing on the cake at that point. and then i got to know their personalities with run bts and they are just great freaking dudes . i don't really consider bts 'kpop', i just consider them music artists who are korean because their range is insane. kinda perfect for a person who listens to everything. i became an army in 2018 and have repped hard for these m'f*ckers since. all this said - it has been so great to see how surprised varnell is that there are army who would understand how hard this ish goes and still love it. yes - varnell while rapline is flowing onstage we're pumping our army b*mbs in the air and going bar for bar with them screaming it back at them. it's hard to reconcile the image of a mostly female fanbase who typically are associated with what people assume are just a 'boyband' vibing out and going hard for like RAP rap and not just some rnb or pop. but we do - we know what he's saying, we know how hard it go, we love it. almost all army are proud of our rapline and value their work immensely. even those who didn't know much about hip-hop or rap before becoming army . to be fair i had gotten into some heated disagreements with some of those people as well, but i don't consider them army if they say they hate rap and only listen to bts' rap - because they have a negative view on black and hip-hop culture. you can't love bts and their music without at least respecting the music that inspired them from the start. i love the army who realize no one is asking you to become a hip-hop head but get that it's essential to understand the roots of the music that made bts who they are. and that is what you two are doing here. almost none of the stuff you share is news to me, but i love that you share your knowledge for those who don't know. thank you both.

Being an ARMY really broaden my understanding of the music industry, how much struggles small artists have. I learnt how to better support the people whose music gives you joy, relieves you of stress and that you resonate with. Through BTS, I know so much more about music of other genres, from other artists. We really put in effort to understand the music and the work our boys put out because we do not take them for granted. This is a reciprocal-parasocial relationship between ARMY and BTS. We appreciate the support you give to BTS and in return we will also support you. :)

I laughed at Varnell having a hard time imagining girls/women really feeling & understanding the aggression of AgustD when prior to BTS nearly all I listened to for 20+ years is industrial music. It's seriously about as aggressive as a genre can get. I was wild at shows 😖😆 Really enjoying everything you guys are sharing along the way. Honestly, BTS (rapline in particular) has made a lot of us more interested in Western hip-hop. Seems backwards to you probably, but most of the hip-hop stuff that's really pushed to the masses by the Western music industry has zero appeal to someone like me because I feel no connection. But because of BTS members sharing the music & artists that inspire them many of us have discovered amazing 'new' music that is buried beneath that which the Western music industry pushes. Really, I suppose it's quite similar to how many people at first assume BTS' extremely poppy English-language songs & the stigma of the kpop industry's typical substanceless image are indicative of all that BTS are about and feel no need to look deeper. Keep going guys 💜

Yes, this is true. I never would have been interested in Western hip hop without BTS. But now y'all having me listen to To Pimp a Butterfly.

I don't think I can tell who Rm and Suga diss but people are sleeping on them. They have a lot of tracks that diss so many people without naming them. I love to see that. The haters don't need to be named. They just call them out and the haters recognize themselves. Also I want to tell you that Megan Thee Stallion and Namjoon will have collab soon. They posted in their Instagrams I'm so excited 😊 I hope you check it out❤

When Megan posted that twt, I was getting in my delulu stage of hoping it was abt a BTS collab, all while preparing to stream Butter Megan remix in my clown suit for getting it wrong. But it wasn't! We won 😤 and I've been streaming BTS and Megan today.

The MV’s for all of Agust D’s songs are so good and I think enhances the enjoyment of his artistry. Yoongi is a fantastic rapper and lyricist.

I'm a little 5' white lady in my mid-50's and I'm exactly that lady you described at 12:20 I've been in love with him/them for over 6 years and had the pleasure of seeing him in concert last year. I have to say I love you both and I'm really enjoying Varmy's discovery. And I need to go buy your newest music - I listened to your older catalog and it is totally my thing Keep it up! Love and peace 💜💜

Those women dancing to the funk and jazz, they are amazing. You can feel the music when you watch them dance, even without hearing the music, it’s in their bodies. Thank you so much for sharing that. That was freaking awesome.

A history of black musicians in the US would be a great podcast. If it weren’t for black musicians we probably wouldn’t have had the blues/delta blues, which led to Chuck Berry and Little Richard (who are often given the crown as fathers of rock and roll.) But the grandfather of rock title is often given to the little known blues artist Robert Leroy Johnson. Johnson had a short life but the gift he gave to music lives on today as his guitar music gave rise to what would be called rock and roll. You mentioned jazz, funk, hip hop, etc. A big majority of music today is based off of music initially from black communities to which we owe a huge debt. To think what music would be like if it weren’t for the great musicians who came before us…
