Sleeper are in my opinion one of the most underrated bands of all time not just the 90s. Wish I had realised this at the time.

I fell in love with Louise the first time I saw her on stage. All these years later I hear inbetweener on R6 and I’m reminded of when I saw her on stage all those years ago. There is still a piece of my heart missing that she stole without even knowing.

Being born in the early '70s and coming of age in the '80s with the wildly divergent sounds of the early Post-Punk/New Wave bands was pretty amazing, but being a college and Uni student in the early to mid-'90s was just as great, IMO. I may be a fourth-generation (and native-born) resident of the state that is synonymous with Grunge, but whilst so many around me we're fixated on the PNW scene, I was looking across the pond and all that was going on there.

Louise was nearly 29 when the band's first album, Smart, was released. I know they formed the band at university - it clearly took a long time to achieve success. I bought Smart when it came out in 1995, I still think it's a great album.

Just really don't understand how they achieved even a record deal, let alone sales. I think they were pretty bad and lame. Kind of dull, like dishwater, although I'd drink dishwater just to avoid ever hearing this blandness again. I liked it when they did their accou-version though with Jo Wiry (I think it was with her) at Glastonbury 95. Ah well, back to my dishes, mustn't grumble.

@@farfisaYou should know almost nothing about voice notes, Sleeper was an underrated but successful band, because of Louise Wener's voice, and including the tone of their melodies, this is clarified by someone who listens to any type of music and studies it, so as not to criticize her, in a way as absurd as you.

@@maaan278 I believe in the absolute absurdity of the universe and further to that, its absolute pointlessness. Therefore I believe Lou W has every right to execute all sorts of sounds be they bland or exciting. It’s of no consequence.

Brings back Art School memories, but this band was one I reo hearing, but for some reason I didn't search them out like I had to search out Let's Active because of the way their song Our waters part , emotes, ...and that's exactly the kind of thing that makes me have to know who they are to see if any more of their music hits on that same way above avery level, but these guys definitely sound fresh!!!

Definitely one of the sexiest women in music of the nineties - and still good-looking now. When I first heard "Inbetweener" on the radio (before I have ever seen a picture of Louise Wener) I said to my mate that was with me in the car then: A woman with such a voice must be really pretty. :-)

@@marcgrossman980 as a fan of them then and now. They really weren't "a million times better than oasis/blur etc" though, c'mon now? That being said, the Manics WERE a million times better than all of them.
@marcgrossman9806 ай бұрын
No, not a million times better. Not necessarily better than Oasis. But they produced a large number of very good songs between 94 and 97, probably like 25-30. IMO probably more than Oasis did during the same period. I will say that Oasis top 5 songs are a lot better than Sleeper's top 5. I found Oasis' albums after Be Here Now to be inconsistent. It seems Noel stopped producing masterpieces after the first 2 albums, and The Masterplan. IMO, Sleeper were quite a bit better than Blur. I think Blur were inconsistent. Never understand why Louise stopped writing songs. I think she has massive songwriting talent. I like the Manics, but I don't think they are better than Sleeper or Oasis. I only had a few of their albums though, so maybe I missed some of their better stuff.
