an employee of an mattress shop told me that two mattresses are better because you should turn the mattress once in a while (like a fish stick) because you have laid a hole in the mattress so you can lay against the hole to equalize the hole..and than turn it again so you still have the support. and if you turn a big mattress it could happen that the mattress will 'break' in the middle and the support is gone :) sry for my english i hope it is understandable.

It's not only cheaper to buy the two smaller mattresses, it also reduce the transfer sensitivity of movement, if one is a restless sleeper. Another plus is, that the two mattresses will be more robust than one big mattress, because of the inner framing. You can buy a big queen-size and very robust mattress, but you will have to pay the price of three single mattresses of good quality. Men are normally a little heavier then woman, so they prefer a harder mattress. With two mattresses you'll have no trouble to find the right mattress for each of you two.
@strikerdku8 жыл бұрын
Yep, that's exactly what I would've said. Adding to that you can exchange 1 mattress really easy instead of having to buy a whole new mattress. And when I was a child I really enjoyed sleeping between my parents right in the crack of the mattresses, I don't know whether you consider that a valuable argument for double mattresses :D And of course you two can decide separately on how soft or hard the mattress for you personally needs to be.

You also have those beds where there is one bedframe and two matresses and two independent curved wooden ones that you have talked about (at least they were popular in Switzerland when I lived there) and I loved them because you could sit comfortable in your bed with almost 90 degree and then get it into 0%, 5%, 10% angle for sleeping and the bed could adjust to each person's taste. Loved it. Right now I think they are available almost everywhere (in Ikea too).

The advantage of two mattresses, in addition to the lower prize, is that if you have one heavy sleeper (i.e. one who moves a lot), and one light sleeper (i.e. one who wakes up easily) this can help the light sleeper get better rest.

Another advantage of 2 mattresses is that you only need to buy one size of fitted sheets for all the beds in the house. BTW when I came to Germany in the early 70s even single beds had mattresses spit into 3 cushions :-) . I myself use throw pillows for exta back and head support if I want to sit up and read in bed before going to sleep at night.
@CologneCarter8 жыл бұрын
Those old fashioned three piece mattresses had one huge advantage. If you had worn out the middle one where your hips would lay, you would just shuffle them around and get some more years of use out of them. But I seriously hope your mattresses didn't spit into the cushions. ;)))

Concerning the "two mattresses in one large bed" I have to say that it is pretty convenient if, for example, you share a bed with a partner who has to get up waaaayyy earlier than you yourself. In my experience, having only one mattress for two people of different sizes and weights sharing one bed is kinda like sleeping on a trampoline. XD Everytime my friend would get up in the middle of the nigth for work, his side of the mattress would go up about 20-30 cms and send me rolling half across the bed thus waking me up in the dead of night, too. XD Which is annoying, as you can probably imagine. ^__^

In a small sleeping room a "made bed" (did i use this phrase right in English?) has an huge effect on how tidy the whole room looks and its quickly arrangeable. So therefore i can imagine that some people take this a step further and decorate the bed properly for the day.

I think you don't understand how wildly some people sleep. My mother is very thankful for the two mattresses because my father moves very much in his sleep, talking and fighting in his dreams it seems. he likes to do some karate moves and noises. And when you get older it is even more necessary that you have a good mattress that supports your back. I would prefer the single mattress over the two mattress too though if my boyfriend was a sleeper like my father i'd definitely choose the two mattresses. Of good quality cause then you don't even really feel the crack lying on it.

I've been traveling between US and Austria/Germany over the past few years. I have to say, I have an affinity for the German/Austrian sleeping situation rather than the American one. The mattresses are firmer (which I LOVE), and the duvet and pillows are all down. I'm currently in Duisburg, Germany and even though it's been a little warm over here, I seem to sleep pretty comfortably with a fan and snuggle up in my bed quite nicely. I sleep better, and deeper. Bonus! As for the "throw pillow" thing. I've never had them nor have had any use for them, because throw pillows are for decor only. I've had to sleep on those things before and they are so NOT for sleep. They're just overstuffed, decorative and quite without function. That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it.

If your partner is a fidgety sleeper two separate mattresses are saving you the money for marriage counselling. You wont be disturbed by any movement your partner makes. And on top you can choose a mattress that is the perfect fit for your body and sleeping type.

Australian here: one large mattress. I've slept on beds with the two mattress thing happening and I hated the gap in the middle. Top sheet - yes, because it keeps the duvet cover cleaner. I also cannot fathom the trend for dozens of pillows of various sizes, the purpose of which seems to be decorative only

If you're in a hotel with two separate beds pushed together and they keep sliding away, then there are two things you can do: - Use the luggage strap to tie the bedposts together - change the orientation of the top sheets from vertical to horizontal. Then both top sheets cover both mattresses from side to side and hold them together.

What you did actually makes sense. We had to explain to so many of our friends what it was about as they were weirded out about the lack of the top sheet. No there is not a top sheet yes we wash the cover every week etc. I also loved the fact that every hotel had two smaller blankets for us on the bed. rather than a large blanket for both. I'd recomend one big matresses. But anyways, heres the pro/con list :) Pro for 2 matresses: - You can adjust hardness for each person - You can have different bedclothes - You can easily replace one if its broken Pro for 1 matress: - Its a lot more comfortable (You just have more space) - They are cheaper in my experience (My matress (200x180cm) cost about 150€, two small would have cost about 200€) - You can cuddle without getting uncomfortable (kinda reason no. 1) - You are less likely to get attacked by monsters (To be honest, I am really afraid of this :D Dont know why) So, now go and decide :)

So did you really find two beds moved together or did you not notice it was one bed frame all the time? That would be weird. BTW I fold the big pillow, too. My "Kopfkissen" is quite small. It gets old really fast, for me. I've done the two-mattresses, one bed (eww) thing, and even with a topper, it's like having a sinkhole in the middle of the bed. If one person sleeps in such a bed and usually moves around a lot, he or she is likely to end up either waking up in the middle of the night with the feeling they're about to fall off the bed, or just wake up in the pit. If two people sleep in such a bed, more often than not, you'll both end up at the pit, too. And, in any case, your back will complain in the morning. Personally, I don't like it. Sure, it's great if you wake up when your SO moves during sleep, or if you both need/want different mattress stiffness, but in my experience, the cons WAY outweigh the pros.

I'm not afraid of falling into it, I just don't see how it's comfortable to cuddle or anything, and sometimes if I have the bed to myself I like to lay right in the middle and stretch out, or lay across it to read. I've never actually laid on one, though, so maybe it wouldn't be as noticeable as I'm thinking. Not feeling my SO toss and turn at night (and vice versa) would be nice, though.
@Melissa-wx4lu8 жыл бұрын
I just wonder how that can be comfortable. But then again...I sleep in the center of my double bed. That would suck if there was a separation right where I'm sleeping. I move quite a lot when I sleep. It's near disorder levels in the amount that I move so I have to sleep in the center or I'll roll right of the bed. I can't tell you how many time I've done that. As a child I almost cracked my head open on the dresser when I rolled off the bed one night. I didn't even wake up. Scared the crap out of my grandmother, who thought I had knocked myself out.

Sorry for all the comments but this is an IMPORTANT thing I just thought of about box spring beds. This year I had problems with both mould and bed bugs. This is not something I've experienced in 20 years living in different places, but bed bugs are on the rise worldwide because they are becoming resistant to the chemicals used to kill them. Box spring beds are really bad for bed bugs because they can hide there without being seen and also because it is easy for them to get in. My flatmate's box spring bed was riddled with them. I have a new metal frame bed (because of the mould!) and they hadn't got up that. It seems they could if they really tried but it is safer and easier to inspect. The advice I had about both the mould and the bed bugs was that it is best not to store anything under your bed and for there to be room there for air to circulate! If you do buy a box spring bed you can get a bed bug encasement to put round it, to protect your bed. (You can get them for mattresses too). Although the downside of the wooden slats is that they are untreated so mould can grow there, but if you are heating and ventilating the room, and air can circulate under it, you should be fine if you don't have a massive humidity problem and in that case you can get a dehumidifier.

I love ikea. I'm american. I like decorative pillows because they make ur bed look comfy and room look inviting. Also, I use my decorative pillows quite a bit too. So they don't just sit unused. When I'm needing support, or someone needs to prop up their feet due to swelling, then the pillows come come in handy. I also use em for support myself sometimes.

In Argentinia and England I notied that everything was really annoying and complicated. instead of putting your body on a mattress and under a blanket and be done with that, there were so many sheets and you'd never know which is a blanket, which is just for decoration during the day, which is to protect the matress and you should actually sleep on top of it. and everything was packed so tightly during the day. you had to take everything appart, it would get twisted during the night and in the morning you had to put everything back togehter. awful. in Switzerland it was like in Germany.

I wouldn't know of any other reason. A single huge mattress is way more comfy. ^^

I have 9 pillows on my bed. 2 of those huge down-filled ones. 6 ones that I take off at night. One filled with Seeds that I put on top of the huge one for more support. I personally like it, because I think my bed looks more inviting and cozy with a wall of pillows on it. It also makes me feel like a princess.

My GF and I have a very special Frankenstein bed at home: The bed frame is one single piece designed for 2 persons, BUT the slatted frame is seperated into 2 pieces, with 2 seperate matresses on top. This brings many advantages: The head section of our slatted frames can be erected seperately, which is very comfortable for watching TV or reading a book. Also, we bought 2 different types of matresses to fit our individual needs (my GF has a very soft one, mine is a bit harder).

For my part, I like the crack between to single mattresses especially in the summer. It is always a little colder there :D And I guess it will not only be cheaper to buy two single mattresses, but also to buy the sheets. And like other people said it is handy if you prefer a harder mattress and Stefan a lighter one or vice versa. Liebe Grüße :)
@louiseglasgow8 жыл бұрын
It's interesting that the two mattresses and two sheets etc are cheaper in Germany, here in the UK it is dramatically cheaper to buy one double mattress or one double sheet than two single ones. I guess it all comes down to supply and demand ;-p I find that fascinating though. That the traditions of the two countries have had such an influence on the prices, which of course then perpetuates the traditions.... That makes sense about the harder/softer mattress - until recently that was an issue here, but now you can get mattresses that are different on each side or that are adjustable depending who is sleeping on them. My brother and sister-in-law have an adjustable bed in their guest room so that different guests can have different levels of firmness - genius!

Canadian here. I hate top sheets (flat sheets here) & don't bother with putting them on my bed. I think part of it is just the time it adds in making the bed. However when I am preparing a bed for overnight guests I will include one, probably because I presume others like it or at least it is easier to remove if they don't versus adding one later if they do. I have also only ever had single-mattressed beds with either a comforter (that doesn't come apart) or a thick blanket on my beds. Though I always like the patterns I see that come on duvet covers and the thought of being able to buy just a cover if I want to change the look of my bed without buying the whole thing (cover & stuffing & all). As for decorative pillows growing up every bed in the house we covered in them, usually with a stuffed animal of some sort sitting in front of all the various sized pillows. I think at one time that was just the style people were into. In catelogues when looking at bedding sets for sale each seemed to come with an array of different shaped decorative & useful pillows. Now in my own house I only have decorative pillows on my couch & they don't often get removed.

The lower bed sheet isn't always fitted. I've grown up using plain flat bed sheets that are literally just a large sheet of cotton or linnen with the edges folded over about 0.5" and sown in place to avoid fraying. Really cheap and easy to handle when washing, drying, storing etc. On the bed, the sheet is tugged under the mattress on all sides, so the weight of the mattress and the person help keep it in place, as do the bedframe around the mattress (if not a box bed). When buying, make sure the flat sheet is a lot larger than the mattress, since the measures on the package is for the entire sheet, not the mattress it is not fitted for.

Waldmeister is a plant which you can find in a lot of places in Europa and you use it to spice up things such as beverages and desserts. I reckon with your single friend and two mattresses, mattresses can be pretty expensive so if he plans on not being single at some point in the nearish future then it's a better investment to get two mattresses straight away instead of just one. I'm in the UK and I think I'd consider that kind of set up if I weren't single, because I feel then if you turn over in the night you have less chance of disturbing the other person. Kinda like having separate duvets. Feel like that's a pretty good idea in some ways, too.

The for me most important reason against the American style mattress system is physics. If one person moves the other will feel the moving, too. With two side-by-side mattresses each mattress can move more independently. As well, it is extremely heavy and therefore impossible to move for a woman. Lastly, the American style mattress system cost about 2 - 3 times as much as 2 good German style mattresses. The queen or king size comforter is not practical, too. It is heavy, hard to dress, and when one person moves the other will always feel it pulling.

There is a really simple reason for having two mattresses and a bed with two slatted frames. You can really easydisassamble and move them to another place cause you just need to take the simple parts of it. Those other version with just one matress and fixed betts are normally much cheaper. I think you can buy one for around 200€, while the good variant I describe above cost around 400€. The reason I started to hate them was because I got 3 older siblings and whenever they moved those fucking stupid heavy beds need to be also moved and it really is anoying to get a 2 m times 1.8 m bed from the ground floor to the first floor or the other way around. So when I first got into my flat I got a simple sleeping couch that can be seperated in two single parts and later got the version i described above.

The beds in the hotel you referred to were two single beds appear to be pushed together, is getting more common in hotels and the mattresses are zipped together to prevent falling into the gap. In the UK hotel industry, they are called "Zip-locked beds" or "Zip and link mattresses" The reason, greater room flexibility as some guests such as groups prefer twins, while couples prefer doubles.

A lot of Americans don't use comforters at all - instead you have a top sheet, blanket, and bedspread. The blanket could be knit or crocheted but is more likely machine made out of polyester or something. Then the bedspread is a thin decorative layer on top. That's what you see in most American hotels too.

We have a Sleep Number bed and I LOVE it. Each of us get our own "setting" for how soft the mattress is. That bed is actually two separate air mattresses; one for each side and the top part is put over those mattresses. So it's kind of a combo two-mattress, one-mattress sort of thing. If a duvet has a washable cover that takes care of the "keeping clean" issue which is one thing the top sheet does. It keeps you from having to wash your blankets or comforter as often. But yes, if a duvet has a washable cover, that actually would take care of the discomfort from twisted or "too pulled up" top sheet.

I also remember sleeping in the crack in my parents bed from time to time. I was very little back then so I was fitting into it very well. Now my parents as well as I both have one big mattress in our beds as well as one big blanket. I think those are really more comfortable, especially when you are sleeping in one bed with your boy- or girlfriend, because I often have the feeling the two mattresses really seperate you, as the crack is really annoying. So although they are more expensive I would always prefer one big mattress, at least now that I'm older.

We just purchased a new bed a few months back. Originally, we were going to go with the two twins then put a mattress gel topper over with the foam joint, thus eliminating the issue of falling in the crack. We took into consideration all the points +Joachim Rimer noted below. Also, in some places, it's impossible to get a queen box or a king mattress up stairs or around corners, etc. What changed our mind was a sale the store was having that we simply couldn't pass on. Good luck in your search.

Reasons for 2 matresses: 1. You can exchange one single (cheaper) matress if you have to and not a big (and more expensive one) 2. The reason of "one softer/one harder" is not a stupid one, even for singles. I have a matress for summer and a matress for winter. Harder in the summer, softer in winter. 3. You can flip one matress over when you "lay a hole in it".

My parents have two mattresses in one giant bed frame. They never seemed to have a problem with it and this way everyone has enough room to sleep. A double mattress in Germany like I have is actually a bit smaller. You cannot put two blankets next to each other if they are 2 people sleeping and sharing a blanket won't work because one blanket fits the size of a single mattress. Buying two single mattresses is not only cheaper, they are easier to transport if you need to move or buy new ones. Also the fitted sheets for the singles are cheaper. I sometimes pay double the amount for my sheets. Another thing to consider is the wooden slates underneath the mattress. They break more often if it is just one big one with a big mattress but the single ones keep longer and the weight is better distributed.
@Randy-uh8wd7 жыл бұрын
Sometimes the king size mattress will not fit up stairs or halls or around corners in an older building. So the two twins pushed together transport and fit better through the doors etc.

I think that 2 matresses are better because if you only have one big matresse, the matresse starts to bend itself and gets a new form. Also each of you can choose a matresse that's best for our sleep
