A lift is like an oven, but with gravitational potential energy instead of thermal energy. Thames Valley controls are made by Dewhurst. The Dewhurst factory is in Hanworth, near Heathrow Airport, so maybe they were named after the location.

Were you in Bristol recently? On Saturday I was in the BRI trying to find some good lifts and one was on Inspection mode!

I wasn't in Bristol. I wonder if it was an engineer or someone surfing it.

What's the door mechanism doing at 9:23? I get the idea it's trying to open the door, but I've always wanted to understand how all the pieces fit together. Edit: Wait, is this a pre-leveling mechanism at work?! Cooool.
@benolifts5 жыл бұрын
At 9:23 we were trying out the manual rescue procedure. The lift was moving by gravity. The lift is normally switched off when doing this, but as we had forgot to do this the lift was very confused.

@@benolifts Ah, I see! Wow, lifts have so many fascinating (and tragically obscure) details and safety features. I've been watching tons of videos from your channel over the past couple of days; it's been awesome. I noticed some broken Discord invites scattered about. I also registered on the forum as i336_. What would be the best way to get in touch? (If you prefer email to talk or send links, it's my username @gmail)

Are there ever people inside the lift cars when you are on top? In this video, I could have sworn I heard someone laughing other than you, and your friend, HateGenerics. If the answer is yes, then I'll bet you hear some pretty odd conversations from folks who think they are in a private setting. Just curious...

How did you manage to get on top of the lifts? It looks like a great deal of fun.

It is ilegal and dangerous. You can get a fine of up to 1000 💶 for doing it.

Have you got a good sized picture of this thames valley speed control, diagram in 17:47. Is this motor standard three phase or custom for this application. also wondering, many caps around, if the are playing with this caps in some way to shift one or more phases, or they are changing the way the motor is wired. You can run a three phase motor under single phase with proper capacitor setups for a given condition. Perhaps this is not a power module, but just a logic for swtich caps and conections between motor and mains with precision timming to get this stepping that is shown in the figure. It cant be power electronics. Tooooo small for this era and wouldnt last that long and would be insane expensive. also controllers were not that fast nor powerfull to achieve what todays VFD do
@benolifts8 жыл бұрын
Looking at the diagram it looks like the motor is wired up to the speed control. There are relays that reverse phases 1 and 2 which would change direction of motor. As far as I can can tell the speed control is simply chopping the entire 3 phase supply. It is effectively DC PWM on a AC power supply. A big motor like this wouldn't use capacitors to simulate 3 phase because that is a crap method, and 3 phase doesn't need to be simulated as it is already there.
@38911bytefree8 жыл бұрын
***** Of course there is a three service there. I said that as example. Getting three phase from single is inefficient. What I mean is you can shitf phases by using caps and if this could had been used to control speed in any way. By chopping you mean phase control like in a dimmer circuit ?. I believe you cant chop faster than the mains freq. Once you gate, it will stay gated till the next zero cross. So, you cant change the frequency, just the waveform. Of course, you get the point when you chop slower than mains freq, you will end sorta of controlling speed but chopping will be very slow and noticeable. Not vey keen on power electronics, just figuring out how they managed this in the 80s and keep it running till today. But something is sure, they were creative, nothing compared to stick a PLC with some relays.

It is very weird. The circuit diagram for it looks very simple. The humming sound it makes is very low pitched. Another weird old system is Bull motors super start. As far as I know this is a 6 phase motor which switches the supply from 123123 to 112233 which is like switching between 2 frequencies.
@38911bytefree8 жыл бұрын
***** Its like you said, look here ... www.electronicshub.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/SCR6.jpg Uses 6 SCRs and of course ... a logic controller. It wont pitch higher than any hexaphase signal because it cant. This change the duty of each sine cicle for each phase in both directions. Still think that this approach for an induction motor is quite inefficient (compared to any VFD) but probably better than two speeds. But they cannot get any speed at any load with that, and probably if forced, motor will tend to overheat in the slowdown process since voltage is not intended to control speed, but frequency

" As far as I know this is a 6 phase motor which switches the supply from 123123 to 112233 which is like switching between 2 frequencies." that's just changing the number of poles, therefore the speed
