I need to read this. I keep telling everyone it was the bestselling novel the week I was born. Didn't realize till I was older how close I was to living at the same time as Agatha Christie. Great discussion!

As I wrote on the thread,I found that the lack of suspects meant that Christie had to play her 'mis-direction cards' a little too blatantly. Like you,on my first read I was pretty certain I'd worked out who the murderer was - but,unlike you,I didn't think Christie would be quite so dark;and was proved wrong :) The first three chapters,though,are quite possibly the best example in her entire oevre of Christie's storytelling technique pulling the reader in. I didn't really care that the identity of the murderer was a little obvious,because I was won over by the strength of the initial set-up. Looking forward to your review of the next one. Imo,the short stories in Final Cases are (on the whole) more interesting than those in Thirteen Problems.

Totally agree that those first few chapters really suck the reader into the story-- I found this one compulsively readable

Hurrah, I'm so glad you loved this one; it's definitely a favourite of mine as I've said before. The aspect around the reputation of the victim and how that could be shaped by those still living was something I liked in particular. And that mug is brilliant! I want one! 😂

Agreed! I like it when Christie plays with the narrative around a victim vs. the reality of their behavior or motives

I also zeroed in on the murderer early on, but I was thrown off when there was another murder later on which it seemed (based on how the scenes were presented) that my prime suspect couldn't have committed. Outside of that, my only complaint was that a few of the coincidences were kind of insane even for the standards of this genre.

My question is a bit off topic, I get nostalgic for Christie just about every 5 years (Yes I am old (Yes I started reading them when I was young (yes this was YA back in the day) How often do you re-read Christie?
@bookslikewhoa

Before these projects, I would often reread through audio on my favorites-- maybe one every couple of months? It will be interesting once these projects are done to see how I do or don't change my rereading habits with her

SPOILERS AHEAD With regards to the ‘murderer with underlying sexual obsession for their sibling’ trope, I went off Agatha Christie a bit maybe 20 years ago when I realised how many of the Miss Marples had the intended victim turn out to be the murderer. After ‘At Bertram’s Hotel’ and ‘A murder is announced’, I was muttering “oh, not again ...” when I read ‘The mirror crack’d’. I imagine it’s true of non-Marple books too, but it seems a high proportion for novels all featuring the same detective.

I hadn't thought about that, but you're definitely right that several Marples fit that bill. It's also something that pops in her other books, but it may just feel more like a Marple thing given the percentage of the overall canon for Marple

I'll give my full thoughts in the wrap up, but in a nutshell, I'd recommend reading in order that they were written rather than order of publication
