The book Mitch was talking about is Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes. It's about a young girl who lived in Hiroshima when the atom bomb was dropped during wwII. Because of her proximity to where the bombs dropped she was soon diagnosed with leukemia and spent the remainder of her life in a hospital building 1000 paper cranes before she passed away. It's actually a pretty sad book. She was only a few years old

The thing with the paper cranes is the legend, that if you fold a 1000 origami paper cranes your deepest wish will be granted. Basically the hard work and long determination of doing so will be rewarded with one grand gesture of the universe. Which really is a sweet thought :)

It's a Japanese tradition called 'Senbazuru', and the point is, you get to make a wish after folding them, putting them on a string and hanging them somewhere.
