Roundup 2023 Begins!

-Welcome to the Sleep Ranch! We are located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where our ancestors settled and started ranching in 1883.
I (Carson) work alongside my parents, Jeff and Jodi, our ranch hand, Jaques, my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town, and our son Silas! We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
We run a cow/calf operation where we summer our cattle on the Black Hills National Forest and winter them in the foothills of the Black Hills. We also have a backgrounding feedlot, and grow alfalfa and grass hay.

It is nice to see the cows push back against Angus from time to time. It means that they are not willing to be easy prey. Angus, IMO, is doing very well.

Angus is coming along fine! Haven’t seen a cattle dog yet that wouldn’t fight steer or a heifer! LOL!! We had a steer that whipped a coyotes to death! Like to see you saddle that bull elk and put him to work LOL!!!

Angus is getting better and better. It was nice seeing the elk. I do not recall hearing if there being any elk in that area when I lived near there back in the 60s. I was in grade school in Belle. My Dad would take me hunting with him. As I said never heard there were elk around.

Having been a subscriber almost since you became a YT content provider I have watched (with pleasure) how you have become so at ease in front of your camera, the steady growth of your videography skills and your producer's sense as you edit your beautiful footage into smooth, coheasive content. I started laughing when I heard you do a bull elk whistle noise. I was "annoying" three bull elk last night by doing my self-admitted, HORRIBLE, bull elk whistle call. But the weird thing is, they always answer me back and some even decide to come looking for the "bull" that's bugling. LOL! Love having elk right in the back yard so to speak but man alive, have they ever caused fence damage this year. We've had to round up cattle 3 times this year and replace whole sections of fence due to the elk herd bombing through it. So happy to see Trump out working and seeming to heal well. Prayers for him to be perfectly fine and dandy!

Yea I just gotta say Angus is pretty awesome. I’m always watching for him to disobey and break command and over chase a cow really excessively. But amazingly it never happens. How do you train him to stay so obedient through the whole round up from the beginning to the end. That is impressive!!

I have no knowledge of working horses so I have a question. Do these horses know or help in the rounding up of cattle or do they just obey their riders? IE: do the horses have an understanding of what is required? Do they show any initiative in the herding of cattle?

When we lived out in the country, our dogs would go to the barn with me to feed. But they would eat the corn out of the manure. I asked the vet about it. The vet kind of shook his head and then said, "I don't know unless it's something they're missing in their diet." Still makes me shake my head. 😕🤷‍♀️

Dose Angus’ collar have a shock function or is it only a tracker? The best way to break a dog of chasing deer, elk or rabbits, etc. Is to light them up and yell NO at them. Usually only takes 1 maybe 2 times. Then when a deer runs to the right, the dog turns left. Used this technique on 2 dogs now and the oldest dog hasn’t needed the collar for years now.
