Calving in 20 degrees below zero and our friend Nate helps us pull the biggest calf of the year!
Hey everyone, My name is Carson Sleep, I’m 23 years old and am a 6th generation rancher on the Sleep Ranch.
Our ranch is located in the Northern Black Hills on the South Dakota/ Wyoming border where my family settled and started ranching in 1883. I work alongside my parents (Jeff and Jodi), our ranch hand, Jacques, and my wife, Damaris who also works as a nurse in town. We have friends and family who come along very frequently as well!
I started this channel to document how a working ranch operates and to show beef consumers how their beef is being produced.
Join me as I learn more about raising cattle, caring for the land and working/operating equipment!

Reminds me of a story my dad told me. He had to pull a big calf, calf was so big he picked him up by his back hooves, lifted the calf with arms over his head, and the calf's neck and head was still laying on the ground. Thanks for the video!

Great job pulling that BIG calf! Did you ever get a scale weight on that one? Sorry about the ones lost to severe cold. We were caught off guard by one of our smaller heifers going into labor. So yup! By the light of the truck headlights, in the bitter cold, with only what we had on hand in the truck, we two old farts were pulling and moving shoulders trying to get a huge calf out. Thought for sure we were going to loose them both but they both made it! The heifer calf weighed 104 pounds! yikes... that was a tough pull but you always feel such joy when you can help the cow and calf get through it all ok. You guys hang in there and stay warm.

We had a cow with a big calf and had to do a cesarean on the cow to save the them both. The cow before her had to help her and the vet used a Jake and pulled the calf apart and broke the cows back. It was awful to see this distraction. Never again I will put an animal through a that. A cesarean comes first. You guys are great with your animals. And you guys do a magnificent job in educating the people of the world of what it is truly like to work on the farm to feed the people of the world. Thank you for this.

@@sleepranch so true. Your family as brought me so much joy from these videos. By watching them brings alot of memories when I was a kid growing up on a mix farm. I use to pretend I was a Rancher. I had a pony that I chased the cattle to bring them in for my dad after school. That didnt last long my pony started to do it on his own. So that left my sitting on the gate post watching. Just telling about this makes me smile. Thank you again for such grand videos. From Ontario Canada.

I can tell your Dad has been doing this for many years as he coached the other fellas in such a calm way. Your Dad is a Great teacher and because of that if you follow his foot steps teaching your children in the same manner this Ranch will continue on for generations to come. After pulling many calves myself and learning from my father and grandfather one trick that I was taught was to twist the calf a quarter turn when it gets to its hips to prevent hip lock. You will be surprised how this works when you are basically putting the calf on its side it will slide right out. I have even let them hang at the hips to drain their lungs before twisting them as I have been confident that the hip twist works so well. This has been a life saver on my end for those 120lb calves. May our Good Lord continue to strengthen you guys to preserver through this calving season. God bless.

Pulling big calves reminds me of a puller I had that was double acting and pulled one leg at a time in a seesaw motion. The pole was notched and impossible for it to slip. But I can't remember the name of it. Your Dr Frank one looks like it's been used quite a it over the last six generations! 😀

I want to know more about your Mom and Dad!! When we grow up on a farm, we see life and death up close and toughen up, understanding there is something GREATER THAN US - GOD! I don't know how many head you have, but we always brought ours in the barn to ensure they'd live.THANK GOD DAD'S THERE, if you watched a few DR. POL VET calf pulls you'd know YOU have to push down on the calf puller then up to crank. Now pull MOMMA over to start licking and get out of there!!!

Do you carry colostrum on hand in a bag in your refrigerator in case a calf may need it maybe cuz the cow won't drop her milk or something weird that you have to warm up a bottle from colostrum you have saved. How many twins have you had this year. Next week till the middle of March doesn't sound good below normal temperature I would take days like today for the rest of spring with temps of 62 like today
@sleepranch
@sleepranch 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Robert, yep we usually keep colostrum on hand all the time! We have some colostrum supplement that we use now and then too if we don’t have any fresh stuff. So far this year we’ve only had two sets of twins! I’ll take these warm days too, God Bless!

Our cows get turned out on forest service permits the first part of June. We calve early so most of our cows can get rebred before going on the forest service. Those permits are too big our bulls have a hard time traveling the huge distances to breed all our cows. Ideally, if we were on the forest service we’d calve may/june
