Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Sleepy Hollow, New York is the final resting place of many famous figures, including Washington Irving, Andrew Carnegie, Walter Chrysler, Samuel Gompers, Elizabeth Arden, Leona Helmsley, Brooke Astor, and William Rockefeller.
The cemetery has over 45,000 interments, including some characters from The Tales of the Headless Horseman. The cemetery also inspired writings from Emerson, Hawthorne, and Thoreau, and is the final resting place of these authors.
Some say the cemetery is a beautiful historic place with an amazing lantern tour. Others say you might meet the headless horseman.
The cemetery is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Visitors can walk or drive through the grounds, and the cemetery office at 540 North Broadway provides free maps. The cemetery has a wheelchair accessible entrance and parking lot. For this walk, we start off at the northern most part of the cemetery at Walter Chrysler's mausoleum. He was the founder of The Chrysler Corporation and commissioned the famous Chrysler Building on 42nd Street in New York City.
Next, we venture through the rest of the mausoleum section to William Rockefeller's huge mausoleum. He was a prominent member of the Rockefeller family and New York head of the Standard Oil Company in the 1920s.
We continue on and transition to the more typical graveyard design, stopping at the final resting place of Washington Irving who was the author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle". The ghost of the World Famous Headless Horsemen supposedly has his nightly ride through the cemetery every night.
Finally we walk down to the southern most part and oldest section of the cemetery where the Old Dutch Church and tombs from the 1700s reside.

Ever take notice how the bridge isn't at all what movies portray? It's opened vs closed. Beautiful cemetery and lovely small town.

Thanks for this. I have several ancestors buried in the Old Dutch Church section. Although you didn't get close up with any of their graves it's nice to get a feel for the place.

Thank You so much for sharing this. We love this cemetery and lived very close to it . We recently moved an hour away but still have family there. We try to go around the fall when the leaves are changing. It’s so beautiful and foreboding at the same time. Since I can’t visit it as frequent as we want to this will give me my fix. Thanks again!

@@DiscoverHudsonValley that’s awesome! I’ve lived in Westchester County my whole life. From where we lived it was 15 min to get to Sleepy Hollow. My Mother in law works down the street from the cemetery. This tale has been my childhood favorite since they let us watch it around Halloween in the late 70s. Disney’s version of course. It’s a great town with that all year around Halloween feel! Thanks again! Be safe and healthy!🙏🏼❤️

Thank you for the walking tour of the SH cemetery. The videos I have seen heretofore focused on the tourist traps and I scrapped SH visit from my bucket list. What I would have liked is some history……..the scope of the cemetery, its “inhabitants” (assume many were wealthy given the elaborate mausoleums. Nonetheless , good job. Not interested in the town though. Seems to have been largely infiltrated by tourists and those whose living depends on them. Am interested in the physical scope of the cemetery because the village is not very large, yet the population of the dear departed covers a significant area. Thanks.

Thank you very much for the thoughtful comment. Yes many of the cemeteries’s inhabitants wee wealthy including several Rockefellers, Chrysler and Helmsley. I agree with you that the town doesn’t have much to offer. Although there is a great restaurant called Horse Feathers 5 mins away from the cemetery in Tarrytown that my gf and I drive up to all of time for weekend brunch. So good. If SH isn’t on your bucket list, I definitely think that you should add the cemetery to it. It’s huge and wonderful place to walk around for a day. Thanks for your comment again and for stopping by the channel!

Was this videoed with a GoPro camera ? If so, I've got one with many accessories to carry it with plus the "media mod" of theirs. Great steady shooting...grand time for viewing a famous cemetery almost all by yourself. So much history from the burials that are there. The weather: overcast yet mild...just right. And all along I thought (actually, still do) that my all-time favorite cemetery I've seen is Crown Hill in Indianapolis. I need to look into this Sleepy Hallow.

Hi Tom! I actually shot this with the DJI Pocket 2. It’s an amazing little camera. Cool on the GoPro and it sounds like you have great setup for it. Yeah I highly recommend going to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery if you can. It’s a beautiful cemetery with a bunch of historical figures buried there. I have never heard of Crown Hill before but I will look it up online. Thanks for watching the video and for the thoughtful comment. Cheers.

@DiscoverHudsonValley

Trust me, I have heavily considered doing so, but I hate the sound of my own voice and I feel that it is also nice for the viewer to experience the walk as if they are doing it themselves. Sometimes someone constantly talking during videos like these can become annoying.
