Your local market has you trained that there's only two types of avocado: the Hass and "Green". In fact the Hass is only one of hundreds of varieties each of which has it's unique and delicious characteristics. If you've ever tried a so called green avocado and didn't like it don't despair. There's hundreds of others out there.
Some are big, some small. Some a low in oil content some high. Some ripen in the spring, others in the summer and some in the fall.
It's time for the industry to add PLU codes to identify each of our wonderful varieties of avocado.

I’m in the Tampa Bay area and my local Publix had Keitt mangos in stock. Bought two of them and let ripen for a few days. Ate one last night and the other this morning. Absolutely delicious. I hope it becomes a trend that we start seeing other mango varieties in supermarkets that way I don’t have to grow them all myself (hoping my Pickering will produce next year). 😅

However, I'm a bit heartbroken that my mango is dying and probably not gonna make it. The stem is still green, but quite twisted, the one remaining leaf is completely dry and dead, most of the roots are rotten, other than part of the main root. When I started thinking about polyembryonic seeds, the mango started ding. Maybe it's a sign that I should try growing only or generally polyembryonic mangoes. Nut I still hope for a miracle.

Yeah, I knew that trehe are hundreds of varieties of avocado, just like the apples that grow where I live in Bulgaria, that aren't true to seed, they are super diverse. But I haven't really imagined, that there are so many different sizes, shapes, tastes and even colors in the avocado industry. I've only seen like 4-5 varieties in the supermarkets (perhaps hass, green skin, reed and etc) The quantity of varieties of species really depends whether or not the fruit is true to seed. I have only a few potted avocados grown from seed in my apartment, about 10 and 1 mango, and also other plants, but they're not as important, although I try to keep them alive. I have one that has dead tip, but starting to break 6-7 buds, I won't remove most of them, if they start taking off, because it's my second ever to have ever gotten side shoots/branches and the stem is not even an inch tall🤣! Anyway, my point is that my avocados from seed could give me fruit, that is exquisite and sweet or they could give me fruit that's disguisting. Even though it's super duper unlikely, I'll try some that perform better to grow the not only as house plants, but to try to grow them, so that they'll eventually give me fruit. And I know it's possible that they can fruit indoors in climates that don't support them in my bedroom or kitchen (I'll put some of them in my balcony when it's calm and warm like in summer).

avocados don't have male and female tree. Each avocado flower has a male phase and a female phase. the timing of those phases depends on the trees flowering type, either A or B. this vid explains it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iZjQXmqtfblrgZIsi=cGuS5TPEDRuuFkoU

So it's no wonder that avocados from supermarket seeds don't necessarily taste good, they're hybrid fruits if they're from Haas trees pollinated by another variety. What would you call a very small avocado with Haas type dark and textured skin? My friend has them in Costa Rica, from grafted branches. They're some of the best ones I've ever eaten.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 9 ай бұрын
check out my vid on the unique flowering habits of avocado trees. the fruit is not effected by pollination, only the seed inside it. the reason supermarket avocados don't taste is good is because they are chilled to extend shelf life and that makes them watery. I'm not sure what avocado your friend has.

One thing I've been wanting to ask you about grafting, what do you think of double grafting? I have noticed that some seeds do very well in our local conditions and some hate it. We have some very healthy seedlings and I have been wondering if should try air layering it to copy that generic material as my rootstock instead of the lottery of seeds as root stock. I'd love to hear what you think, thanks, Mark
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
We have the same issue here with seeds and we just plant way more than we need. As for your idea to get predictable rootstock from air layering I don't know the answer but I'd say give it a try. The downside will be that air layered clones take longer to develop a root system than a seedling does so I don't know how much energy they'll have to be able to heal a graft.

Hey Tom, have you ever tried growing some California varieties of avocados like the Pinkerton, Nabal, Zutano, or a Jan Boyce? I talked to another KZbinr named Carlos from the GraftingAvocados channel and he said he tried those but the taste was off and they didn't seem to do well here. I am going to try that myself because I'm finding it hard to swallow that a Guatemalan avocado like a Nabal would only do well in California and not in Florida. Any wisdom to share on that?
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard 3 ай бұрын
Hass have a hard time here in florida because there's fewer leaves on the trees and our sunlight is too strong here. The varieties that do well here tend to have a lot of large leaves. Toward the end of July you'll see yellow patches where Simmonds start to get sunburn, their leaves are somewhat sparse too. My friend grows a Zutano in his front yard and it does well.

Yesterday I went out to look for hydrogen peroxide, but didn't find any. Then I went to a small shop, it was mainly for plants. I brought my almost dead mango and the expert decided to check the mango and cut the tip of the bottom remaining root and it was yellow and still slightly green from inside, so he told me there was still a chance. But today my mango's stem is practically black, but no mold, as the expert told me. While I was still there he offered me a fungicide for my other plants (mainly avocados and future avocados) and I washed the roots of my mango with the (deluted) fungicide. I still can't believe how quickly this mango is deterioating, just 5 days ago, it didn't look that great, but still had its leaves and now it's a black stick (the bottom is still a bit green). I think it's time to accept the fact that my first attempt is gonna fail, but I'm not giving up on it yet! The bottom half is green, the inner layers of the remaining root are pale, and the base is quite ridgid or solid, you never know, the mango might surprise us. Do you think the mango is gonna make it?

@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
That’s not true. There are a lot of myths surrounding GMO. Currently there aren’t any GMO avocados. In fact, there are surprisingly few crops that are GMO.
@Enoch-Gnosis
@Enoch-Gnosis Жыл бұрын
@@SleepyLizard your correct not gmo , but a type of modification to the skin . The experts at Apeel Sciences have invented an edible coating derived from plant materials like grape skins that they claim doubles the shelf life of the average avocado. "Made from the same materials found in every bite of fruit we eat, Apeel adds a little extra protection to the fruit’s skin so that it stays fresh and delicious longer, which lessens the likelihood of you having to throw your avocados away," Michelle Masek, head of marketing, told Forbes. The best part? These avocados don't cost any more than untreated ones.

I was doing reading on GMO products and the point was made that bacteria and plants ... and who knows what else ... carry the genes for all kinds of stuff, and when you breed them you never know what genes could be activated. The point was that when you mess around with the genetics as happened with a species of bacteria that was bred, genetically engineered, to produce L-trypophan by the Japanese company Showadenko they can kick in genes that produce proteins that are deadly. It's probably not likely but it seems like it might be possible for very minutes traces of proteins to be present in foodstuffs that we eat and unless it is a clone or a very domesticated plant it's possible to have toxic effects. What do you think of that? Have you ever heard of any wild avocados that made people sick when they ate them?

I live in Mexico but avocados don't grow here. Two days ago I bough misterious variety of avocados but they were green, I will taste them tomorrow for the first time and I'm excited for it 😂 In the south of the country many homes have their avocado trees and they have their preferred trees in the neighborhood, every tree has different flavor. The Haas is for branch markets and export.

Now that I still have half of the fungcide, I could use it for my avocados, basil and mint and etc.. My two best performing avocados, that I've been bringing them out fot the calm (wind

After a few days of trying to remove the spider mites, I messed up rel bad with the mango. Now the mango looks absolutely abysmal! It only has one leaf, still green. But when I watered it more a few days ago, it started wilting and the remaining leaf is extrmely droopy. And now the stem is sttarting shrivel or twist. There was a black spot on the base of the mango between the root and stem where the seed was after I removed it, but it looks as if it's grown and I think there's mold. I think I severly overwatered it. I'm gonna buy or at least look for a spray in the shops, you know, pesticides. But I'm very worried, I... I don't want the mango to die. I'm gonna check the roots and see how they are, but I'm scared that there will be a lot of root rot, it hasn't drunk much water and the soil looks as if there are pathogens or some kind of rot in it. Wish me luck!

A uniquely North American problem. In Australia our industry sells avocados under their own varietal names-Hass, Reed, Shepard, Bacon, etc, as do our nurseries. You have some lovely varieties there!

Today was the first day I brought two of my best looking avocados outisde on the balcony. I waited for the temps, winds and weather to be perfect. The winds were relatively calm peaking at 10 mph perhaps, but this evening the winds got stronger ( I don't have a big problem with strong winds, but the avocados are just not used to it) probably moderate peaking at 20-25 mph, I could hear them howl slightly and even whistling. So they will be inside again, the forecast says it will be windy tomorrow. I just really want them to start putting height and thicken their trunks. As well as strengthening up. Because I mean like come on, let's be honest, 90 cm or 3 feet in 2 years, that's a little pathetic for an avocado, but I'm still proud of my avocados, even though I've had some losses.
@SleepyLizard

@@SleepyLizard One of them is in a huge pot, I can barely lift the avocado up. I've heard that some pots do have wheels. But regardless, I shouldn't have repotted my avocado from 1 gallon to probably 10 or 12 gallon pot, it did get root rot in February and a little slower, but still consistent root rot this spring, but 2 months ago, the avocado started growing rapidly, before it slowed down in August, but the root rot is much less concerning. My avocados grow irregularly. But I really loved it when two months ago my avocado grew 10 leaves in one set.
