The Asmat people live on the southwestern coast of western Papua. A land that remained unknown for a long time, free from outsiders, discouraged by the Asmats' terrifying reputation as cannibals and headhunters!
We went to film them, simply to be the witnesses of their untouched culture, in one of the last unexplored regions of the globe, and to better understand their way of life in this singular territory.
Extract from the documentary: “Asmat”
Direction: Jean-Michel Corillion
Production: ZED, Odyssée & RAI

20 year old, but very nice short documentary about Papua. I was lucky to get see the birds of paradise, cassawaries, and komodo om Bali as I really could go further East to Komodo annd onto Papua just on my own. For that you adventure, you'll need specialized guides and guards that gets expensive though the protection services are necessary particully if starting out in the dangerous high crime city of Port Moresby. I guess what's probably changed the past 20 years on Papua is the sold a lot of forest for the Chinese to cut down exported to the West as lumber for things like American wooden buildings.

Ini luar biasa journey dan video SLICE. Truely kualitas National Geographic. Informative....

Unless the PNG cassawary is smaller than the Australian breed - that was nowhere near adult size.
@Sensirebel
@Sensirebel 2 жыл бұрын
New Guinea has the Southern cassowary (the same as Australia) and the Northern cassowary (slightly smaller in PNG) and also the smallest Dwarf cassowary (mountains of PNG). There is an even smaller extinct one called pygmy cassowary that which used to range from new guinea all the way to NSW in Australia. Its closest relative today is probably the bush turkey.

I lived in Irian Jaya for a time, the Asmats were not cannibals and were predated upon by the lower jungle tribe that few have seen. Our helicopter pilot always told me that if we crash in the three canopy jungle that we would never be found. He said if you were injured, lost, or being hunted, kill yourself, it would be a far better death than getting caught by the lower jungle tribe of cannibals.
