Who are the Inuit people of today? What does it mean to live in the vast expanse of the Arctic, in the age of urbanization and technology?
In Nunavut, a Canadian territory we meet a new generation of Inuit, for whom this loss of identity has taken a dramatic turn caused by difficult cultural transition.
Matthew and Elena, two inmates in a local correctional center, agreed to participate in the "On the Land Program". This project, dedicated to helping Inuit people get back to their roots, teaches them about their own people, and helps them develop ancestral skills, including hunting wild animals, making clothing with their fur, and building igloos to resist the harsh weather. Starting with their initiation, and progressing to stunning scenes in the Arctic ice fields, the film provides an in-depth portrayal of a forgotten population and the challenges it is trying to overcome.

Very tough life especially with so much external influence aka (internet, social media) if I lived there and saw shiny warm bright things I could not have.. and having had first peoples rights stolen, I think I’d be desperate. Thankfully elders are still providing for the younger generations. Bless this program.

An incredible documentary, regarding people we never hear about. I for one appreciated seeing this , as I might never have seen the Inuit , or their lives - modern day. Sadly all 1st peoples are largely disadvantaged to the shame of the " ruling classes" But it's heartening to see that the traditions are being kept alive and encouraged by tribal members to the young coming up...change is difficult for all, but the loss of self pride and identity is so very hard to reinstate - but it can be done, there's a lot of love still in the world..

There were some abuses back in the cold war days when the government tricked some of them to relocate but nothing has been stolen from them per say. With this being said I would fully agree to grant them independence if this is what they want. Very few in the south care about the north anyway. To always blame others for your problems it's an easy escape.

While it may take more resources to feed a team of Inuit dogs, that breed should be part of Inuit culture. Dogs are loyal. They protect humans. A motor scooter can't warn of danger ahead. It won't fight. Those dogs that were bred back in the 60s were a special kind. Polar bears eat humans just as an example why I wrote this comment. These kids I wouldn't assume were spoiled. It's more due to the inter-generational trauma caused by the horrific things that happened to their grandparents and parents when they were forcefully taken to attend Residential Schools for years at a time without returning home. A lot of children didn't make it back home. In present day, there are more than 1,800 unmarked graves found on Residential School sites. Not every single one of these are Inuit, as Residential Schools had the goal of replacing Indigenous languages and culture with English and Christian beliefs. With that being said, I agree with failure of proper guidance while growing up, but there's many other factors that could have an effect on why they are incarcerated and why the rate of suicide is outrageously high and hasn't really moved towards improvement. If anyone wants to know, yes I am an Inuk from Nunavut and I am/have lived in Nunavut my entire life. Thank you and take care all.

I stopped part way through. Why? Because I live here, and something is missing. The Colonialism. The why people are in this position in the first place. The lack of questioning. Alcohol wasn't here before they were colonized by Europeans and forced to live the ways they have been told. The abuse and torture they subdued and still do, all due to this invasion of their land and their culture. It seems a little belittling that they are telling a story without the why they are here being investigated, in a documentary nonetheless. Because the story is a lot darker than it appears even though it is already so dark on the exterior. I work at this facility and it has been upgraded since, and it is a rehabilitation centre more now than it is a prison. They are clients, not prisoners. They are people in need of help, but before we understand the truth behind how they got here, we will never really be able to help. If we were never here, they would have been far better off. The real fight is taking back what is rightfully theirs!

Chemical dependency, mental illness, isolation in a changing world, abuse…all goes back to colonialism. Colonialism is the root of a lot of it, but the documentary itself is trying to show how people can redeem themselves through going back to where they came from, and reconnecting to what was lost or never learned

true say man. I wish I could like this 100 times so it gets to the top. the influence of settlers has been and is so destructive. mary river mine in Nunavut is one such example. Destroying the hunter's and fisher's way of life for a mine that is operating at a deficit... it's depressing enough that the mine is operating but it's not even making money... people are so fucking stupid it makes you just want to give up.

This is my thought also. I keep waiting to hear about colonialism, which is at the root of this. The reason why people are in the position of needing to learn about their own culture as adults because their culture and identity was stripped away. I would like to see a documentary filmed from an Inuit perspective that includes the intergenerational trauma, and the resilience of this cultural and its people who continue to persevere after over 400 years of colonialism. I’m also too angered to watch this documentary to its entirety.

If you're using their ability to speak English and their thought process as support for your statement, then I disagree. They speak the way they do because their first language isn't English and I'm positive that in their home setting, English isn't used. I also positive that regular attendance to school and graduating while they were growing up wasn't instilled as a very important goal.

I watched another doc about Canadian inuit just recently. Inbreeding was caused by the killing of all sled dogs in Canada.
