Slick Rick was very influential to a lot of rappers that came after him. Snoop Dogg’s Lodi Dodi is his version of Rick’s La Di Da Di. And Ice Cubes Gangsta Fairytales is his version of Slick Rick’s Children’s Story. A Teenage Love would another good track you should give a listen.

Slick Rick came on the scene in 1985 with Doug E Fresh and the get fresh crew. Their first big song was The Show and Ladi Dadi on the B Side. Rick went solo right after that. He was born and partly raised in England before moving to NYC. He’s one of the best storytellers in rap history but he went to prison shortly after his album came out because he was also the first rapper to shoot someone. He shot at his bodyguard/relative who had tried to extort him and hit an innocent bystander in the process, and since he isn’t a natural born American they made an example out of him, he was released from prison sometime in the late 90s and they were going to deport him but he somehow beat that. He does old school concerts and performances mostly nowadays.
