the director of the game even stated that mario was ORIGINALLY supposed to punch yoshi but it was scrapped because he thought players would feel bad for yoshi. that and when a yoshi falls off a pit or into lava, they don't really die rather they just teleport back to their egg, this is proven by the fact that you can still find yoshi in question blocks after you've dropped him and he's even seen going back to his egg after "dying" in super mario galaxy 2

Mario: If you were to have a new sports game based on american football, who would the main villain/villains be that is not bowser since he would be a default playable character?
