I don't know why, but it is so mesmerizing to hear it breath in slow motion. You can hear the valve admitting pressure so well... I never get tired of the slow clips. Thank you for the indulgence!!

I learn more about these with every video of Keith's I watch! tysm!

That pleases me, because that's why I started making them in the first place {:-)))

Slow motion worked well, seemed quite convincing of a full scale engine!

As usual very informative and enjoyable - making engineering understandable, excellent! Sounds good too!

Ah yes, the "Pencil sharpening syndrome", It's sometimes referred to as "Howard Hughes" syndrome in American aviation circles. Hughes would agonize over every little detail, like the position of dials etc. rather then move on and make changes later. It's one of the reasons his H-4 Hercules (Spruce Goose) wasn't finished on time. The other being the delay in debugging and acquiring the engines, which were also needed for the B-29 bomber. The quest for perfection almost always leads to imperfection!

No sir, I don't have OCD. I have CDO. That's all the letters in the proper order.

Hello Keith 👋. I have a 5 inch gauge dougal with eccentrics on the back wheel axle (slip eccentric) . It goes like a bat out of hell in reverse . But not so good in forwards . Should I adjust them at the rear . Hope your well . Rick

Another great video! After watching a few (hundreds) of your videos I have decided to start to work on my boiler in the coming weeks as time allows. I heard you say someone left a bunch of steam engines with you. Are any for sale? I am looking for fairly large engine that needs some work. I tried your website but it seems to be down at the moment. Great sense of humor BTW!

The Website seems to be OK, maybe it was a glitch ? A brand new one is almost completed }:-)))

Pencil sharpening syndrome... Oh yes,, I know where you're coming from. Not OCD but a general quest for exactitude. Yet another episode very much enjoyed, Keith.

@@keithappleton Hey, I was wondering, do you have any steam engines whose governors act on the cutoff rather than the throttle? In the USA they were often referred to "automatic" engines. And were an efficiency improvement mostly used on stationary engines running lineshafts and electrical generators.

Wow how true the " sharpen pen " syndrome! I tend to do that with mfg tolerances....everything so " dead nuts" it suffers from drag and difficulty of assembly. I am cooking up a Heinrici and the piston/bore fit........

Ah! Same here. So: Tell it to the Hone!!

Something attractive about that engine, I’ll have to think about it.

I wish it were that easy to time an Accucraft Ruby. The "Simulated Stephenson's" gear is far from easy to fine tune and I ended up pencil sharpening it, but every time it was close to perfect and I adjusted it I ended up back at square one. Ugh...
@keithappleton5 жыл бұрын
Yep - that's usually how it goes :-)

The problem with pencil sharpening is you ether go through the whole box of pencils with out getting one just right or you end up with one that is so sharp that it cuts the paper and doesn't write. Not having the hearing of a musician or much hearing at all, I have to open the valve chest and set it by measurements, and feeling for vibrations.

Don't people still use sandpaper to make a sort of chisel point on a pencil?
@davidstillman42716 жыл бұрын
Should have taken your sharp pencil and marked the flywheel to gauge your timing movements. As it is now your just Willy Nilly
@keithappleton6 жыл бұрын
"Willy Nilly"eh ? ........ maybe it appears that way to you as I show in the video, (which I did on purpose to illustrate the method for beginners), but quite different in reality - I am not entirely stupid . . . . video, film & television is all an illusion }:-)))
