I had a very similar issue with my 83 not starting. Mines a stock 305 auto for reference. I replaced the starter and now it started like 85% of the time. I got told on the forums to “use 91+ grade fuel, clean the in carb fuel filter, install an inline fuel filter (especially if you’re still running 87,) and change/flush the new inline filter regularly. If the car is an ‘84 or older it might have a mechanical fuel pump meaning it NEEDS PREMIUM or it will eat the diaphragms in the pump and weaken or break it.” I did all that and it starts flawlessly every time.

That's super interesting, because I remember looking up the owner's manual lmao and I believe it said to put 87. I know if I look up the manual on Ford on my new edge mustang it says specifically to use 87, and that "higher octane is not recommended as it will make whatever existing problems more prominent". Not related to your comment, but I tend to stick less with forums and more with visual mediums just because anyone can say what they want like reddit lmao. And it seems like it worked for you too, so not doubting you at all trust🫡 Always some quirks with these older cars.
