Recently I added a few new quails and ended up moving all of them around to hopefully get different colors. In one of my cages I have never seen the rooster mating. He has always been a shy and quiet rooster in the past but now he actually runs away and hides from all the females. Its been a few weeks and still no improvements. This is the first time this has happened to me in the last 6 years.

Thanks heaps for the discount. I bought an incubator from these guys on eBay last week and have just ordered the pack of 10 cups. I really do enjoy your vids always something new and interesting to learn. Thanks again!

I just finished telling my husband that I am really sick of refilling water bottles twice a day (more on really hot days), so I'm glad you showed the watering system. Thanks for the discount code, too, that's awesome! Lost the first chick, but at least one of our snakes ate well. I'm collecting a week's worth of eggs currently to try again. Mr. Jumbo has the rest of this week to give me at least one fertilized egg before I eat him! I'm marking the eggs so I know who's who.

nice. I am glad that worked out well for you. Good luck on the upcoming hatch. Hope it goes well. I have eggs going into lockdown tomorrow so hopefully I will finally get the updated incubation video finished soon.

Looking into raising quail this year and i always do plenty of research before getting into anything and i have to say i was wondering myself about the breeding issues but this cleared it up some thank you, among the videos i have watched yours seem to be a staple, very information to the point.

I will! You can count on it! Thank you for answering my last question about your turner set up also. In case you ever doubt yourself when making these videos ... don't. For folks still trying to pull it together it's a ray of light to live vicariously through someone doing the things you want to do. So, all that to say, I appreciate you and keep keeping on.

How about for the cold weather like here in Manitoba where almost 6 months of winter . What can you suggest
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 4 жыл бұрын
I am sorry but I am not sure exactly which part you are referring to. If you mean raising them in those conditions in general, quail do really well in cold weather. The hardest part is watering them and having to replace frozen water every day. But as long as they can get out of the wind, they are fine. I hope that answers it.

I've seen some people mist their dust boxes down if they are concerned about the heat. If your birds are getting too hot they can sit on the damp sand to cool down.

My still air incubator has been fluctuating between 99.5 and 102 degrees constantly. Will this strongly affect my quail hatch?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
It depends on how long it is staying that hot really. it can have an affect but it is common for an incubator to fluctuate in heat a little. Try to keep it in an area that is fairly constant with temp. Don't place it next to an air conditioning vent or in a window that gets a lot of sun for example. I wouldn't stress too much about it though, see how your hatch turns out and then make adjustments if needed.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind comments. They do very well in cold weather as long as they have a way to get out of the wind. As far as how many birds you can fit in a cage, you should figure about one square foot per bird. I hope that helps.

Great video. I live in the UK and i have kept Chickens, Ducks and Quail I have never worried about breading the heaviest birds i have only breed the healthy and the ones that lay the most eggs. By breeding the heavier oned do you get bigger birds from the hatches? Thanks
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and for the kind comments. All my quail pretty much lay one egg a day so weight is really the only thing I could figure out to use as a guide. :) The hope is that I will get bigger birds by doing this but I haven't kept real good records so I can't say yet that it has made a major impact. Stick around though, maybe I will figure that out one day. :)

I have bought my first cubby of quail they are 1 week old when they are newborn I am told the brooder box should be 100° as the babies get older how warm should I keep the brooder and how long should I keep them in brooder
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 8 жыл бұрын
I have a video on brooding quail if it helps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqrWlKyMfamqbaM You need to keep it at 100 degrees for the first week and then can start backing it off to maybe 90 degress. Once they feather out completely you don't really need to provide any more warmth...that should be about 2 weeks or a little over. Hope that helps.

I got 21 birds back in Mid September. They were 6 weeks old back then. They are aprox 10 weeks old now , and I haven’t gotten a single egg. I have 6 roosters and 15 hens . They were in cages 7 per cage ( 2 roosters and 5 hens per cage) up until 2 weeks ago when I finished my Quail pen. They are in heaven now , but still no eggs. I live in Southern California . Did I just start to late in the season? I’m puzzled!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 6 жыл бұрын
It is probably due to the lack of light. The days are shorter this time of year and the quail need about 14 hours of light a day in order to continue laying. You probably need to add an external light and give them a week or two. Hope that helps.

what is your square foot of pen space per adult bird ? do the quail have a perfered time to lay eggs ? since you pen is 3 foot deep how do you get to eggs way back there ?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 8 жыл бұрын
Figure about 1 square foot per bird. I don't really have to reach the back of the pen very often but when I do I pretty much just stick my head inside the cage to make the reach. As far as laying times, mine mostly do it in the evening but I am not sure if that is consistent with others. I will look into it a little and try to get it answered in next week's video. Thanks for watching.

I am thinking that one of those water cups on a stick would make a good egg cup enough to move forward to the cage door My cage will by 5x5 it's a 8 foot tall outdoor bird cage so I am going to make a stack cage

Have you ever used vinegar in your water for your rabbits and quail to keep watering system clean? if so, how much? thank you I really enjoy your videos as they go into detail... which I need!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
I have never had a problem with my hoses or watering system getting very dirty. As long as you keep it out of direct sunlight it stays pretty clean. I have added apple cider vinegar at times as a health benefit (seems to help with rabbits overcoming stress and things). I just put a big "glug" from the jug into a five gallon bucket. If I had to guess I would say it is about a quarter cup or so. I hope that helps.

Are you using regular silicone and pvc glue? I just want to make sure I don't kill them
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 7 жыл бұрын
yes. As long as you let them cure they are fine. I found that the silicone doesn't last very long on the bucket so i found a better way to connect the hose to the bucket. I will be doing an updated video that should come out on Monday.

Good Day My disappointment is that the quails always escaped me from the cage They are soooo clever that even the little little whole will find they escaped rapidly that when I am coming back from my work place I cannot find any one of them How to prevent from the escaping the quails...? Love your ideas which give me great inspiration All the best with your farming! Anya

Hello :) first time commenter. Just want to say that my husband and I are very impressed with your videos. We have just begun our journey of meat rabbits (champagne d'argents) and jumbo Coturnix quail. You have had some very helpful and straightforward insights. Thank you! My question is as a rule of thumb, how many water cups should you have per # of quail? Do you ever have trouble with the water cups freezing? Or are they less likely to get as cold because they don't have metal components? Thanks so much, and keep those videos coming! My three year old is excited to butcher our first quail haha
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 8 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Thank you so much for watching and for the kind comments. I have not kept quail outside in the winter yet but I am sure the water cups will freeze up very quickly. I plan on addressing that by using bowls like I do for the rabbits. Just have to change them out once or twice a day as they will freeze up too. I hope that helps.
