How Cold Can Quail Survive a

This is a common question that I get this time of year. The short answer is that quail are incredibly cold hardy and, more than likely, you won't have to do anything but provide them with some protection from the wind to keep them happy and healthy all winter long.

As long as you have a wind shelter you should be fine. We have a water heater and a heat lamp but don’t turn it on until it hits -30 to -40 but for the most part in the hut it is usually 10-15 degrees hotter because they are little hot pockets. You also don’t want to keep it too warm in the hut. I found if the heat lamp is on all the time they start to shed there winter feathers.

We have a sheet of plywood to cover the back of our open space in our coop to keep the wind and weather out. I put hay in their coops but usually find them crouched down on the wire in the freezing weather. They have their favorite spots to sleep. I live in northern CT. The hardest thing is the water freezing.

Our first year with quail We get 40 below windchill Our quail will be in a portch or shed and we have a protective area for them in the pen Rabbits have no problem if they have a sheltered area to stay dry and out of the wind

Wind chill is the worst however one of my neighbors had hers in an enclosed shed and they all froze. I plan on using an incandescent light bulb in their light sockets (right now they have led lights to extend the hours for laying) to add just enough heat so mine will be ok in their partially enclosed back deck cages.

@@smckee9063 as long as there is no problem of fire hazord If i need to heat the cage i will just bring them inside for that part of the winter Thanks for the information Quail are just starting to grow in our area and ive heard they can be tricky up here Northern Ontario We raise chicken chicks inside and raise rabbits inside over the winter too Not all rabbits but the new born babies are inside

@@wildedibles819 I raised rabbits in north Idaho when I was a teenager, I'm retired now and the trailer park I live in (eastern WA) doesn't allow chickens but when I discovered Coturnix corner You Tube channel I immediately jumped in with both feet and am glad I did.

Mine are in a garage and a coop heater for some heat if needed to keep water flowing. Had 30 below wind-chill before so garage will block wind. A fish tank heater could work with water. Pond heater if a huge water source. Had both fish tanks and ponds. Bred fish. Fail. Then had cats to show and breed now quail. Expensive to show and breed cats now. Less shows due to the c thing

I just purchased 21 1 week old Cortunix quail how cold is too cold for them. Or What temperature would they start to die off at this age

Sorry for the slow response. At a week old they aren't completely feathered out yet so you will need to keep them around 95 degrees (F). After they fully feather out (at about 10 days old or so) you can start lowering it and once they hit about 3 weeks old you can acclimate them to any temp at that point and they should be fine.

@@Slightlyrednecked I lost 10 due to leaving their water in the bucket and they got wet sadly. 11 thriving still and looking better than ever. Took the water out at night and gave them a flashlight in their bucket. So far so good.

Hi. This will be my first winter with my quail. They are kept in a coop on the ground. I have been layering pine all summer long. Will they be alright on the ground or should I consider bringing them inside. Its gets fairly cold in PA.

As long as they have a place where they can get out of the wind and weather, they should be fine. You might even catch them playing in the snow.

Lovely video as usual. I've now hatched out about 28 birds altogether. Five have deformed or broken feet. Usually one but of the most recent one bid has both feet inoperative. Is it accident or a deficiency in feed? Thanks for any answer Chris.

Am bassed in Northern Ireland in the uk. It's currently around 11 and 7 at night. i have 3 weeks old quail. Can i put them outdoors, and do they need heat? I've been flowing ur channel for over 5 years more for the rabbits now, and just getting into quail any advance would help

Depends on where you keep your quail. If they are in a shed, garage, or your house, you can breed Coturnix Quail all year long.

@@VeysPlace I was thinking of Incubating them indoors and later on in the shed. I just don't know how many weeks old they should be until I transfer them in the shed because it gets cold in the Winter. I live in New York.

I put bricks in my heated bowl so they can't get in. They can get on the bricks or drink from the side.
