Thank you! I’ve got my starter trio and need to wait a few more weeks before breeding them (young). I’m a visual learner, so I learn a lot by watching the way you handle the animals - which is very gentle. Can’t quite figure out why vegetarians watch these vids and are compelled to comment. Your animals are in a humane environment ❤

I never had much luck with breeding rabbits in winter. I don't know if the reason was cold or short days but from mid November until April the doe was less receptive. When they did breed there was high mortality with the babies. I'm sure that was because of cold temperatures. I never stopped having litters because of summer heat. It's one of the differences between raising rabbits in the north compared to the south.
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I would say it is a lack of light causing it. That is a common issue. It doesn't get as cold here and doesn't stay that way for as long as it does where you are at. And I am sure it gets much hotter in the summer too. Definitely a difference in how breeding is done.
@zone4garlicfarm

@@Slightlyrednecked The amount of daylight is different, too. Our shortest day is only 8-3/4 hours of sunlight and the longest is 15-1/2. Day length triggers reproductive hormones in most animals.

I do build my cages. Honestly, if you can find used cages that is probably the cheaper way to go but if you need multiple cages it is cheaper to build them than to buy new cages. On the other hand, if you only need one cage, it is probably cheaper to buy it than build it because you can't buy just one cages worth of wire. My very first video ever uploaded was on how to build a wire rabbit cage. in fact, if you type "how to build a wire rabbit cage" into google my video is the first one that comes up.

@Annie-go7uu

Hey again!!! We’re up and rolling cuz of you!! Thx for all your guidance. Question for ya! Would it be harmful or stressful to a doe if I used her kits specifically as frozen feeders, 2 weeks or younger? What I mean is, Can I pull her babies from her at 2 weeks and rebreed her? Do I need to leave one to nurse? Raising rabbits for our 6 dogs and our own family consumption. I Have a local market for frozen feeders and want to go this route to recover feed costs. Not to make profit or business venture but just my method of recovering feed costs. Idea is to have one or two does specifically to birth frozen feeders, we know lots of reptile owners and seems to be a good market where people are willing to pay a premium. Bad idea or good idea? Thanks!!!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a pretty good idea. I am really not sure what kind of stress it might cause on the doe. I might give her at least a week or two after removing the kits to recover a little before being bred again. You might also look into some things you can feed after removing the kits to help dry up the excess milk. Things in the mint family will usually do that.

@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I have addressed that in video. I don't have that problem myself but I will see what I can do to get it covered in a video. Unfortunately, full onset bloat is difficult if not impossible to treat. You can use infant gas drops (like what you would use for a small child) to try and help. The best thing is to avoid bloat all together. It is usually brought on by sudden changes in diet.

@InClausWeTrust
@InClausWeTrust 5 жыл бұрын
Just saying I'm not an expert, just trying to help. If you're on day 18 now and you had a quail starting to burst the shell 2 days ago, which is day 16, the temperature might've been too high. The humidity seems alright-ish, could be higher but overall that shouldnt be the problem, at least not the reason for that bad of a hatch rate. The one who is not moving is dead, I'm pretty sure of that. If I were you and nothing changes by the middle of day 19 I'd stop the incubation and get the 2 live quail out. If you really really really want to you could stop incubation at day 20, but if anything wants to hatch by that time, by my experience, they're severely disabled to they point that they're not viable (and you might have to do some mercy killing, which, by my experience, isnt fun... Also the reason I don't help chicks hatch anymore). Judging by the day 16 chick I wouldn't get my hopes up. I personally, which might sound cruel, take all the remaining eggs and put them into the freezer. The chance of anything hatching after turning off is very low and the sub freezing temperatures accelerate the death of any maybe-alive-chicks. You can then candle the eggs to see when the death of the embryo accured, the smaller the embryo the earlier in the hatching process it died, obviously. Also you might find that the eggs you bought were not fertile in the first place. (I had 14 eggs when incubating the first time, only 2 hatched but I only had 5 fertile eggs anyway). If you report back we could guess where the problem might've been. I'm sorry for your bad experience... Incubating eggs is a learning process and, at least in my case, it gets better with every hatch. Hope this helps!
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
I am sorry to hear about your problems. As Cuberus said, it is most likely a temperature issue. The incubator could be reading a little high or a little low. If you haven't already get a couple of calibrated thermometers (make sure they are calibrated and accurate first) and verify what the temp is in the incubator. Sounds like you did everything else correctly and i am sure your next hatch will be much better. Hang in there.

Its okay if you rebreed your doe after weaning her kits?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
yes. You can actually rebreed her before the kits are weened. I wouldn't do that any sooner than a week or two before the kits will be weened but you can do it.

Hello mate, I love your videos. I have couple of minilops and her litter last time had only one baby. Is it normal?
@Slightlyrednecked
@Slightlyrednecked 5 жыл бұрын
That isn't normal but it isn't really that abnormal either. Sometimes they just have a strange pregnancy. Usually, if that happens the one kit will be much larger than a normal newborn kit.

@@Slightlyrednecked yeah. I have one that's about to be 🍜 because he is so aggressive. I DIDN'T use gloves and he scratched a sensitive part of my wrist (not why hes gonna be soup, hes just plain mean besides that) and now my whole wrist is sore. I was moving him to a different cage because the cage he was in was bigger, and the Doe I moved in has been bred. I give my does bigger cages than my bucks because of all the bunnies.

What is this? Hasn’t anyone taught you anything? You shouldn’t tilt rabbits back always hold them with their belly to the ground and NEVER hold them with their ears, no wonder they don’t like being handled and don’t keep them on wire bottom cages because rabbit paws don’t have padding so that will really hurt them and lastly you should keep rabbits and bunnies inside because they’re prey animals

You literally said there prey animals they were created to be food. And the wire cages are fine as long as you have a board they can rest on.
