The *BEST* Turn Counter for DIY Pickup Winding Machines - Red Lion CUB5B000 + RRDC2000 Setup!

More credit to Rob DiStefano, who's generously helped me over the years by providing infinite amounts of information on pickup winding. After advising me to get a PenPal lathe, he told me about his turn counting setup, which uses a Red Lion panel meter and retroreflective sensor.

Was thinking that you could also use an inductive sensor instead of the photoreflective one, then glue or otherwise attach a small piece of thin ferrous metal on the back of the backing disc to act as the detection surface. These can be found from various manufacturers in various form factors and detection distances. Generally, the shorter the detection distance, the more accurate the detection can be - but unless you're counting hundredths of turns, it probably doesn't matter a whole lot 😀 One widely available type to start experimenting with might be Omron E2B-M12KN08-WP-C1 2m, which is a M12 thread mount NPN type Normally Open sensor with a sensing distance of 8mm, with integrated connection cable. Should work with the Red Lion counter with the correct parameters.

I love your videos! But i will add the Iphone has an app that uses the phones magnetic sensor as a turn counter. I was pleasently surprised on how well it preformed, free....I think the name of the app is "Turn Counter". For the occasional winder or diy guy

If you hunt eBay you can often find them much cheaper. Most of the parts I get are from eBay, sometimes you have to wait a while for something good to come up but I'm almost always to save 1/3 to 1/2 off retail price if I wait long enough to catch a good deal. The RRDC2000 is also very expensive. The price has gone way up on both since I first bought them years ago. But recently I have seen some CUB5B000 meters on eBay going for around 100 bucks, sometimes you can get lucky. I almost never bid and just wait for the Buy It Now sales
