There is no other song like this in the world. So different, so beautiful, so inspiring. And this version is so sweet and nostalgic. I love it when Slim jumps up into his falsetto... Slim Whitman sang for his fellow servicemen under duty in WW2. He was just as scared as they were, but he brought som comfort to them. Years later decorated soldier Audie Murphy tormented with memories of the war found relaxation and got to sleep listening to Slim. A little more more important than the Martian movie, that almost made fun of him. I grew up with Slims early records at home, and I still enjpoy them, no matter how some people might think of him.

In the early 80's I learned Opticianry from a guy named Charles Neils in Port Hueneme, CA. He was a radioman on board a US Navy Destroyer involved with the bombardment of Iwo Jima. He spoke to me about life on board ship and also about how Slim Whitman's tunes helped the crew to manage their emotional trauma and how Mae West was the biggest Sex Symbol there ever was!!
