Gonna make a suggestion here that I offer for anyone sleeping in cold conditions. Much as you dress in layers for the cold you should prepare you sleeping area in layers. There is a reason why there are such a thing as four poster beds and there is no reason you can’t recreate that effect in your trailer bed. A simple horizontal line running from head to foot of your bed with some sort of cloth “tent” above your body will help to hold in the heat escaping your body and not diffusing it into the ambient air of the trailer. Especially considering where you are it will help to dampen sound and light pollution in your sleep

I was a semi driver and I went down in between 2 mountains and I got stuck in a 8 foot snow drift. I got out and measured it and made sure that I was still on the road and I was. I spent 2 days with no cellphone reception in my truck but I had a full tank of fuel and food to eat. I kinda felt like I was camping. It was pretty fun. I had my TV and movies to watch until I seen a plow truck come. I had to remove the snow away from my truck to get out but I was able to drive again. I would recommend everyone to have food with them in the winter and keep your gas tank full as possible. Warm clothes would be a definite plus in your survival in this situation. I was lucky to have soup and a electric cooktop to heat up my soup. I never thought I would be in that situation but I had everything I could ask for and I had fun during that time. Alone in the Washington state woods and I even had Christmas lights on in my truck to help keep me positive. I did try to shovel my way out but I wasn't going anywhere, I drift was so huge and I would have needed alot of space to backup and get my speed up the mountain ahead of me. Even with chains and the road plowed, my tires were just barely getting up the mountain but I had no other issues after that and I am lucky to have everything I had and I was lucky that was the only time that happened. I didn't need a tow truck, I was only stuck because of the massive snow drift. It was as if my truck was suctioned cupped into the snow, when I was stuck. I said to myself, really, I have the worse luck but then I relaxed and enjoyed the rest cause I worked all week. I got my much deserved 34 hour restart and I had a emty 70 hours log book again. My company was laughing when I told them I had all the soup and coffee I could eat and drink because I had just went for my week shopping in Portland OR, while I was coming from LA to Seattle and then I was going to pickup a load in the backwoods of Washington and head east but the load was taken off me, when I got stuck and I wasn't able contact anyone.

Like you I'm a Winter person. I have U.T.D = Unable to Diagnose, I'm allergic to Summer, Heat, Sunlight, Humidity. Have had every test, allergic, Hormone and Bloods, scans everything. It's just in my D.N.A. I adored this video. It's winter here in Victoria Australia now and I love it, but it does not snow where I am, in the mountains it does. Adore the snow, have never seen, touched or experienced snow and blizzard conditions, but I know I would thrive in them. The little Camper you have is so deceptive, it looks tiny, but the inside is huge and tall. Is it? How cosy and warm. Subscribed as I adore video's like this. I don't do any form of social media only KZbin, so glad I found your channel. Sending my kindest thoughts to you and your family from Victoria Australia. Adore Canada also.

The A-liner is the perfect roof shape for shedding a snow load! Imagine a flat roof RV in this weather. You would have to climb up every hour to brush snow off, ugh! Actually, this is also an ideal scenario for a Dewalt 20V leaf blower - just blow that dry snow off! That dirty brown snow reminded me of my days in Buffalo, NY. The snow would cling to the back bumper behind the tires in one big clump you had to kick off! These clumps littered the whole place. So glad I live in California now! Nice scenery you showed us, thanks Slim!

Advice from a Canadian prairie gal. Instead of one of those little brushes, get a real broom, perhaps with the handle cut down a bit to get the snow off. Clean off all of the snow from everywhere on your vehicle, including the hood. The snow from your vehicle can go flying off into the car behind you; it's just common courtesy.. If you are concerned about driving on icy roads, try to keep your wheels on the snowy parts; you'll get more traction. Keep some big bags kitty litter in the bed of your truck or in the trunk of your car; you can also try sand, but the gritty stuff tends to get out of the bags and all over the inside of your trunk or truck bed. Works great when you've slid off the road and need some traction. Kitty litter in a sock is very helpful in keeping the dampness out of your car/truck/trailer interior. If you are going to be driving out and about in serious snow conditions, get a scoop shovel; much better for digging yourself out of snow. Get some winter underwear to stay warm. Silk or wool are good choices. Get a space blanket - it holds your body heat in. Get an emergency kit, such as those sold for massive emergencies like an earthquake or whatever. Get hunting socks to keep your feet warm, and hand warmers; great when you are out there brushing the snow off or digging yourself out a drift. Keep 2 or 3 extra pairs of socks and mittens; spares in case the ones you are wearing get wet.

When a person is properly prepared and equipped for some snow and cold it ain't that bad. I go for a bicycle ride and a walk every A.M. about 6:10 most of the winter in temps 15 degrees F and up then go home and toss some oak in the stove and enjoy the fire. As Slim mentioned in the beginning cold is okay if you are planning and prepared to be in it. Tough trip for ya Slim. Glad you let us enjoy it too. Thanks.

This brings back a nightmare drive a few years ago. We were visiting my spouses nephew in DC for the holidays, and had to drive home on Boxing Day (we live in Toronto). Just as we left a light snow began to fall, but the weather forecast said nothing about a snow storm, just ‘isolated flurries’, ya...right!, it was a heavy blizzard from DC all the way back to Toronto!). As we hit Pennsylvania, it went from flurries to a full on blizzard. Winds over 80 mph and several feet of snow, but we had to be back because we were both supposed to be at work the following day. We have only two vehicles, my 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix, and my 2006 Ford Fivehundred with AWD. Thank god we took the Ford...it also has traction control and ABS brakes. I only had the car for a few months (I got it used, but for free, from my dad, and it only had 40 000 miles on it). Driving along the main highway through Pennsylvania is a beautiful drive in good weather, with a ton of twists, turns, long up hill climbs, etc....as we past every single car/truck was stuck, even the big SUV’s, but I had just put brand new Goodyear all season radials on it, that were designed for winter specially. While they were wicked expensive (nearly $2000 for all 4), they were so worth it as we drove past crash after crash, cars and trucks stuck on every single hill. But we just coasted right past them all. It’s normally only a 9 hour drive at most, but I don’t drive fast in that kind of weather, and it wasn’t easy steering around the thousands of stranded vehicles stuck in the deep snow in the middle of the road....it took us 17 hours just to get to the border in Buffalo...we were literally the only car on the road, but we made it all the way back to Toronto! The tricky part was knowing where the road was at night, as all you can see is snow, but Americans are brilliant! They have reflective markers on 6’ tall posts all along the highway, so we knew exactly where the pavement was, that, and I used an old trick that has helped me driving in other storms....I followed the 18 wheelers! Those guys (and ladies too) are professionals, and know every inch of the road, in fact, I followed the same truck from mid-Pennsylvania, after the hilly parts were behind us, all the way to buffalo! A handy little trick if your stuck in heavy snow on a road you’re not familiar with. So YEAH FORD!, it was and still is THE BEST vehicle I’ve ever driven in shitty weather. Best of all, we made it in time to get 5 hours of sleep so we could return to work without getting shit from our managers! I LOVE driving, but you need the right tools for the job, and that AWD + Goodyear = a safe ride home, no matter how deep the snow is!

TJ Devareaux, LOL, what, do you work for the mob or something? You're telling us you couldn't have told your work places that you were stranded in a huge blizzard, and didn't want to risk your lives, and potentially the lives of others if you crashed into them, so you were not coming in to work in the morning? I've heard of job loyalty and all, but JEEZ, aren't your lives worth more than any damn job? And 17 hours of hair-raising, white-knuckle driving sounds like a nightmare. You could have stayed in DC in a nice warm hotel room, and headed out when the roads were clearer.

I had to chuckle a bit when you said it was freezing temps inside your trailer, but you weren’t going to use your heater. If there was a woman with you, you would have been most definitely using that heater!! (I of course am speaking only for myself; I’m sure there are a lot of women who would have been just fine without the heater!) I do love winter camping; and being by the coast, I used to really enjoy camping at the beach in the state park where there are full hookups so I could use the trailer heater. One time there was a pretty good storm blowing through, & it was so cozy & warm in the trailer; with my dog for company it was a great camping trip. I love your videos Slim! My then husband was stranded in a truck in a ditch in NW Ohio during that brutal blizzard of '78, with a friend, for 3 days. They had a candle. For some strange reason, they had a candle. It helped, but they were young and healthy and they did what they needed to, to survive. Imagine having to go to the bathroom in that storm, to say the least about the thirst and hunger; fear and unknowing; discomfort and freezing cold. I have heard to always carry candles and a lighter in your vehicle. The small amount of heat will keep you from freezing.

As someone else mentioned, keep your pants and shirt or sweater under your electric blanket and they will be warm for you in the morning. As well, you should keep a couple of candles for such an emergency, is the heat from one candle can keep a car interior warm enough to survive in a blizzard a couple of candles would surely keep your camper warm without having to turn on the furnace and using the gas.

Your trip reminds me of our escapade, delivering a horse from our place in Florida to my sister outside of Edmonton. Weather called for 10 days of clear skies across the US, March 2012. Truth was, rain hit us outside of St. Louis, Missouri. We made it to South Dakota and a bit more rain was predicted. We parked in a Walmart parking lot and awoke in the wee hours to sleet rain and a half inch coating of ice. We were in our F250 with a slide in camper and a 16 ft bumper pull with a 1200lb horse in it. Temperature had dropped overnight to below freezing and as we warmed up, then pulled out, it started to snow. By the time we reached the North Dakota line, it was a blizzard and the first time my husband had driven in snow in nearly 12 years. Needless to say, the wind was vicious, it was a pitch black morning and as we came to a short bridge, the trailer started fish-tailing. My mind was praying but my mouth was repeating, "don't over correct, honey..." We made it and saw faint lights just up the road. I did not care WHERE it was, we were taking the exit. We were both traumatized as we pulled into a small gas station in a small North Dakota town. It was finally light out, there were regulars chatting over their morning coffee and as we walked in, the fellow took a look at us and asked, "is something wrong? Are you okay?" Well, I burst into tears and cried, "We were almost statistics on your highway!!"... This fellow offered us a parking spot, horse and all, behind the station because the wind gusts would not allow us to return to the road. It was nearly 30 below and everything was creaking. He also supplied us with an electrical cord and power for our little heater in the camper. I made the day between the horse with three blankets on and the camper shaking on the truck. By night fall, this fellow came over and told us his friend had moved all the equipment out of his big barn and offered it to us to back into out of the wind for the night. I was astounded at the kindness. It was bitter cold but protected and once again, they gave us electricity. The next morning was calm and clear. They refused payment and laughed about how often people get stuck due to the changing weather in North Dakota. We made it to Regina, SK the next night but found a place for the horse (to be picked up later) and turned back for home. This time I was driving (more recently removed from cold weather) and coming south out of Manitoba, the highway was ice and packed snow. My husband asked me how I drove through the icey patches. I have to say, constant speed, no acceleration and Fate being kind. Of course, God is always in those prayers that inexplicably pass your lips! We know about stranded in snow storms, trust me. I am always glad to hear when someone makes it back safely. Good video. Next time, stay south until June, okay?

You got a modern 4x4 and a trailer, you’re in great shape for an Earthquake. I have been in a few (1@ 9.2). I slept next two weeks in the car in winter, melted snow for water for a month. We just had another quake, and my brothers home has cracks and buckling and doors that don’t open now all over the house from quake 3weeks back. Going to cost $150k to fix. Your good to go

Wear a hat to bed, one like a Sherpa hat that ties under your chin so it will stay on while you sleep. Put your clothes in the sleeping bag with you. It's extra layering and your clothes will be warm without turning on the heat just to warm up your clothes. Get your rig in between two semi-trucks, it's called riding rocking horse and it's a safe place to be. Great video.

When I lived in the wilds of Scotland I had horses. We had a little bothy above the stables and we lived there. The body heat from the horses took the edge of the cold.

Sometimes I wish everyone knew how living in a small town in the mid prairies was. Roads only get plowed by the vehicles that drive over them.

Dear Slim Potatohead, thank you for this important video. It builds my own confidence to see how nomads overcome specific situations. It was amusing to see a Canadian polar bear like yourself curse the cold and snow. Once I get where it's warm, I'm staying. I've lived in the upper midwest my entire life and I've had enough with weather that is either too hot or too cold or too dry or too wet. I'll be chasing 70 F for the remainder of my life God willing. Safe travels.

Wrapping a thermal blanket and a sheet inside your sleeping bag helps. I've camped out in Colorado in Nov with temps down to 0' and stayed warm in a tent. Also putting a sleeping bag inside a sleeping bag works well too!

Hello when safety trumps your goals? Like safety in kind being a giant unknown. Just because people live with conditions of a punishing nature safety has to be number one. Nature can be tricky and when human nature plays tricks safety never trumps goals. Wishing for people to wise up and keep safe the concerns of a standardized means of protection. You are a Canadian and Fellow traveler, thanks for showing up, Gut Free Brian Koller
