An idol can lose their carreer and have to make a public apology if they bullied someone in elementary school but it is ok for grown men who are being trained to PROTECT their country to harrass and assault?

I’m sick of being told to shut up about this issue because I’m not Korean. You don’t need to be Korean to know people are going to harass them in a situation like this. It’s dangerous. Taemin was already in therapy and dealing with trauma and depression. God only knows what his condition will be like after this. If athletes don’t have to go, there needs to be a bar set for idols as well. It’s for their own safety. Their contribution to the economy is enough service to their country. They don’t need to sacrifice their mental health with guaranteed sexual harassment to boot.

Exactly, I don't get why you have to be Korean to care. I don't need to be Korean to know that sexual harassment and R**e is wrong. And I'm sorry from a western perspective, if you are going to force people to serve in the military and make it mandatory, you better make it safe to shower. The fact that going to the military isn't even a conscious choice, makes it all the more important to not make the military absolute hell for the people joining unnecessarily.

That’s the point of going into the military. To toughen up. You can’t just use mental health to get out of anything that is uncomfortable. This is preparation for war, and war doesn’t care about your trauma and mental health. Why don’t you read about what happened to Koreans while Japan occupied their country (through WWII), and see what kinds of things they had to endure? I've been in a private pension school, and yes the showers was a whole nightmare for me, as an introvert very shy person. See all these eyes on my body was traumatic. Till today, I still can't go to the restroom in public spaces ( restaurant, airport, train, ect...). So I can imagine how traumatic it can be for idols. It's why I think agencies have to be force to not debute boys band before thier mandatory military service. It would allow this kpop industry to finally end thier obsession for teenagers, allow a mor sustanaible carrier for idols and allow them to have more maturity en endurance before jumping in the harsh celebrity life. Korea society have to finally create a more human and healthy place for thier citizens, especially youth.

The thing that is so upsetting is that they have to remain silent or they'll be hated and accused of getting special treatment, being divas, etc, as if some special treatment (like a shower curtain, honestly) is a bad idea with celebrities in the military. What I find sad is that this video is only being made now because of BTS's looming enlistment. Really?! There have been MANY idols who have already had to live with these horrors yet no videos were made. That's tremendously sad. I remember being very upset with Taemin's enlistment because so much has been made about how beautiful he is for a man. No wonder he was so worried and upset. Even Key mentioned how he was worried about the fact that while he, Minho, and Onew all went within months of each other, knew where each other were, and took comfort in that, Taemin would be all alone. Well, those concerns materialized and our very private, gentle-souled Taemin was harassed, bullied, and mentally tortured in the showers. Due to their past relationships and close proximity to N. Korea, China, & Japan. I feel their military requirement is justified, however, I also believe they need to come up with an alternative plan for famous people, like a separate facility or abbreviated service.

I remember crying hearing the concern in Key's voice for Taemin. I didn't really understand but what I told my friends was *"He's been there, there must be a reason for all that worry and concern."* And they told me to chill, that he was just worried cz Taemin is their baby. I really wanted to believe them, and then later those horrifying issues came up,it was so heartbreaking. Anyway, I'm Army and I agree that this issues about celebs/idols in the military enlistment conditions should have been addressed before now (in fact all wrong issues especially of harassment of any kind and against anyone should have be looked into) but I'm also hoping this focus from major fronts because of BTS helps correct some of these things not just for BTS but others along with and after them cz if it wasn't for Taemin's case I had no idea conditions there were that bad for these idols

@@hualian5339 I firmly believe that Taemin's anxiety issues may have stemmed from the fact that he had just been reunited with his brothers after being separated from them for 2.5 years. This separation occurred less than a year after JH's death. So, within a year, Taemin's entire support system disappeared. He always mentioned in every show, concert, etc., how much he missed his brothers. Do you remember how ecstatic Taemin was in his VLIVE when he announced the beginning of the return of his brothers starting with Onew? He had just seven short months with them and then got the word he was leaving them again. I think this caused separation anxiety because who knows what would happen to his brothers during his absence? (Taemin was doing his "Move" promotions when JH died.) This is purely my speculation, but what I believe.

I was HIGHLY concerned for Taemin going into the military. I thought 100% he was going to have a hard time. I knew the shower would be a huge problem for Taemin but I was also worried about him being ra**d in the military. Everything about Taemin has ALWAYS been about his looks, sexuality, and just in general being sexualized since before debut. He's CONSTANTLY been called girlie, talked about his woman/girl looks, later showed pictures of how girlie he looked back then after he was an adult, or the fact he's had to kiss men on camera in front of everyone for skits and just smile about it sadly. Ra** was a HUGE concerm for me when it came to Taemin and I'm PRAYING he's okay. For an idol to speak out in SK about mental health shows A HUGE suffering they are or did go through that is still hurting them. SM made an announcement about his past and current state of mind and mental health. When I first heard that and ALL the crap going on with him in the military. My first thought was Taemin might have been sexually assualted. I'm still worried about that for him. It's not like he would ever tell what happened to him in the showers. Especially if that happened to him in the military. I'm still worried about him. Taemin is the guy who smiles, laughs, and goes home to his "safer place." Then suffers in silence. That concerns me. Then with what happened to Jonghyun right before he would've went to the military himself and the suffering SHINee members went through. I was afraid people would torture Taemin over that alone. Or ask him what happened retriggering him. OR the fact he's still trying to get back up on his feet with other SHINee members, the maknae of the group, and went to the military solo only to suffer without his members. I REALLY pray Taemin is getting the correct help he deserves.

@@Saddlemomma Yes but I don’t know if you ever been on TV, documentaries, contracts, etc. but I have. Many of them. Just because he’s back with his family/members doesn’t mean the trauma from before, during especially the military with everyone staring at his body and gosh knows what else, contract commitments, and more isn’t HIGHLY effecting him. Everyone acts like just because someone is smiling a lot they’re not dying on the inside. That’s a mask for trauma. I know MANY people who paint this “better version” of everything for the world BUT behind the cameras people can’t even imagine the trauma going on. Just because someone sees a therapist or takes meds doesn’t mean they’re getting the actual support they need. I’ve seen many people like myself get therapy for severe trauma and blow through some really sick non compassionate therapists. Minhos “job” basically right now under contracts is to show the world everything is all okay and paint SM in the best way. That’s literally his contract and JOB is to make fans and the world clearly understand EVERYTHING is all okay especially when people is taking about negative stuff. He’s under a contract. That’s literally his JOB in doing that. History shows once the contracts have ended you REALLY see what’s been going on for these idols. The damages it has left and will leave. Taemin 100% is fighting stuff no one will ever know about. Even family, friends, members, and especially the world. Even after some people get out of contracts also doesn’t mean they can talk about what happened under those contracts. I’ve been in contracts where I absolutely wasn’t supposed to talk about what really was going on with the company, channel, people, crew, filming, etc and I spoke up so others have a true understanding of what’s going on behind the scenes of things. Like right now. I’m going through a missing person case who’s family wasn’t by far treated right. The people being watched is painted like angels. The people who’s been on the case unlike the others was painted like criminals. All because of another documentary being in the “talks.” I had ENOUGH of it all. I made the decision to be sued standing up for what is right than allow another family and the world to pay for BS from that channel and all the channels that they make $ off after dropping the documentary. So again I stand behind there is A LOT Taemin is going through that might not ever be told. Under contract your JOB is to make the company no matter is going on inside and out look amazing. SHINee JOB is to show the world amazing performances and to always represent the company in a great light so the world keeps giving $ and the talent keeps signing contracts. It’s beyond sick what really goes on. I always tell people to listen to others stories who been through it all. I actually understand A LOT of it, been through it, and is going through it. So I’m not blinded like A LOT of other Kpop fans when it comes to being on and behind the cameras, the public “image” I had to show, and those awful evil contracts basically hiding the pure BS to the world. If SM was absolutely committed and great in getting help for their artists. REAL help then they wouldn’t have a history of artists killing themselves and connected history of other suicides to those suicides. Especially leaving behind suicide letters calling out that “committed help.” Jonghyun was getting at that time of that committed help you spoke of. He killed himself leaving behind a letter even talking about the doctor “his committed help” and how crappy he was. As far as Taemin he might need help that SM isn’t giving, won’t give, doesn’t want out so has highered therapists dedicated to the company not artists in making sure the truth isn’t out there of what goes on behind the cameras….etc but only Taemin can tell his truth HOPEFULLY one day out of those contracts. Hopefully but his contract could say even after his current contract ends you can’t talk about what really happens under SM entertainment. I would say Jonghyun spoke absolutely clearly for us all under contracts what really goes on behind the cameras to the world. Under agencies and contracts. Sad it takes multiple people dying and still nothing changes. At least Jonghyun was able to tell the world after his death that, “I Jonghyun was seeing a doctor who didn’t give a crap about me and all my “committed help” was absolute crap. Probably SM isn’t giving that committed help you’re impressed by. It’s also sad for artists going on camera and dropping HUGE hints in their music, eyes, smiles, etc and just wanting the fans or someone to see it’s BS. Yet so many people is wrapped up in their life, fantasy world of these idols, etc that it actually takes them dying for the world to see it’s not all flowers. Even then the fans go instantly back to lala land and fantasy worlds. It’s actually extremely sad what really goes on. I’ve been absolutely in Taemins shoes burying people to suicide. Being suicidal. Under contracts and forced to represent crappy people with a smile. Meds, doctors, and a lot more. The great thing about my case. I didn’t have fans who didn’t see my obvious pain. I didn’t have extreme fame thankfully and I was able to vent on the media the evils of certain companies only facing the risk of being sued. Taemin clearly can lose A LOT more. So praying one day he can also open up. I think fans also need to help wake up and truly understand Minho or ANY idols ACTUAL JOBS (SM isn’t their besties) are to smile for the world, take amazing photos, say their company is outstanding, give great performances, smile some more, and suffer in silence. That’s the real shame. They’re absolutely NOT allowed to get on the internet or any shows and tell their fans or the world bluntly SM is crap. That will almost never happen. So it’s up to fans to see through it all without being blinded by fame lies. So for you. You don’t have to worry and be comforted however you please. Me, I will keep worrying and pray it gets better later in life for all the idols, staff, etc. Have a beautiful evening or day or whatever time it is where you are. Hope this explains it more for others. Then again explaining crap over the internet is a task near impossible unless people can fully understand it or want to understand how it all works. Most people don’t care. They care about what they buy. They buy lies. That’s the sad reality and truth. Hopefully more fans look up and listen to other idols stories who opened up so far. None of it is smiles and beautiful rainbows like fans think.

Thank God for the base Lee Taemin was at, they changed his showering schedule. I'm grateful the Army put him in civil service with counseling. Not all military bases there are bad, but some let shit happen. Crazy that Koreans say that homosexuality is wrong but some soldiers make it hard for idols. Taemin had never stood still long enough to deal with Jonghyun's death. This is where it hit him. Thank you again, you made me cry because I love Big Bang & Shinee you covering this I hope helps bring a resolution that is comparable for idols entering service. ❤️💯

Im old. I come from the Sixties Generation of Americans. Young men of my age HAD to register at 18 and were DRAFTED & rushed into active overseas combat duty (many got killed) So military service issues are very real to me particularly when there is no...choice...to serve. I DO appreciate the ongoing threat level in South Korea and the NEED for a prepared military in a country in an ongoing state of war. I also see potential for resentment if celebrities are seen as getting "special treatment". But the time & talent specifics of the CAREER of kpop (much like other performers & athletes) truly is...exceptional. There SHOULD be an attempt to address the fact And in the US Military there IS a viable ALTERNATIVE military option that Korea would be wise to adopt. OF COURSE it goes without saying that kpop idols as symbols of perfection, will be gawked at in the shower also jeered at for being too pretty & abused or exploited in endless ways in that harsh environment. There is also a case to be made that certain idols really SHOULD be exempted (and surely WOULD be in the US and ARE with some non korean idols) due to acute & chronic dance related injuries that would make it IMPOSSIBLE to train for or engage in COMBAT. (Which is the PRIMARY reason for BEING in the Military) Or, in taemins case, his artistic temperment has always been fragile and dealt with even as an idol. An emotional challenge as severe as anxiety or depression SHOULD have automatically exempted him from The Millitary. He simply had NO business being there...at all. Taemins fellow SuperM member Baekhyun of EXO WAS by virtue of his ongoing health issue allowed to do off barracks "public service work" But frankly reserves & supplimentery service SHOULD be an accepted OPTION for all idols & not only as an exemption for "health" reasons. Baekyun may have a better situation than taemins but he is still absent from his public NOT permitted to appear with his groups or even to post the KZbin videos that he pre prepared for his fans. Idols cant enlist at the START of their youth focused career nor is enlisting as late as possible a good option when they are hitting the TOP of their game. Being gone for near two years is devastating in show business & by the time idols return, they have lost status momentum & fickle fandom. Service should be an obligation but not a career gutting punishment. One other consideration is that SOME alternative really should be available to kpop GROUP members whose entire GROUP is affected (essentially benched) for the extended perio while various members are enlisted (large groups like EXO are decimated fir YEARS) particularly since doing service ALSO requires idols to be entirely removed from their company & career obligations to appear or perform or even to profit from their KPOP GROUPS which seriously suffer decline and may even disband over extensive enlistment hiatus. America addresses this career circumstsnce with The National Guard which SHOULD be available to idols & their groups. Gaurdsmen do a few months of basic training after which they remain AVAILABLE if called up for national disasters & emergencies but basically they serve for a few weekends a month and a couple weeks per year.. The REST of the time an idol in the National Guard could continue their day jobs AS idols and live at home. This Solution would allow Idols to honourably DO their military service but it entirely SOLVES "that military hiatus kpop idol problem..." Finally...the hair. Of course this was a HUGE issue in the Sixties in a culture that performed HAIR on broadway to address THAT particular outragrous violation on personhood. The Buzzcut Under the guise of hygiene shaving the head truly IS ALL about conformity discipline & stripping recruits of individual identity. Top brass makes a case for the dehumanizing tactics of basic training as essential to create an effective combat unit... But this is the absolute antipathy of HAIR as the decorative expression in Kpop. So buzzing is a particular affont to idols (who are actually all handsome enough to survive being buzzed) still there is a greater sense of shame & degradation and even trauma for them.

After being mocked for worrying about the members entering the military, thinking that this would be nothing but a security headache, this makes me feel a bit more justified in that thinking. I’m worried more now but I think it’s important to talk about these things. I remember watching G Dragon being released from his military service after he finished his time and he looked so unhappy, he just looked so defeated and I didn’t know why at the time. Both my mother and I wondered what the hell had happened to him in there. I expected to see a happy guy walking out but he was anything but. Now I know why. I’m in the States so I didn’t hear any of this until now. If they can’t address this shower issue, they have no business making famous men do this if this has a propensity to happen to them specifically. It shouldn’t happen to anyone of course. This issue should be addressed regardless. I haven’t watched D.P. on Netflix yet but I’m afraid to. People are saying it’s a tough watch. I don’t know how true to reality it is but it’ll probably make me worry even more. This makes me so angry. I can’t stand bullying or harassment of any kind. People say “the members want to enlist”. Anyone who thinks that has another thing coming. Korean men don’t go because they want to, there is no wanting about it. I’ve seen enough of them talk about it. They go because they have to. The alternatives are worse, so there is really no choice except jail for a longer period or defecting to another country but they can’t ever return. If it was such a wonderful experience they would not have to force men to go. So in this vein I feel if men are forced, there is no incentive to make it worth their while, you get what I’m saying? I’m hoping they’ll get an exemption or just have to do a few weeks basic, but I have no idea if it’s now too late? I guess we’ll know soon but I had my heart set on knowing at the end of April, then at the end of June, so now I’m just preparing myself that they will have to go. I just hope and pray they will be protected in there. Thank you for the talk. I hope you’re well! 🤍🕊🤍

I happen to know south Korean Jehovah's witnesses are often viewed unkindly because they don't do military service and instead usually take the jail time. I think it was only recently that they made an exception for conscientious objectors to have alternative civilian service. But because any male Jehovah's witness in that age range was basically guaranteed to have gone or be about to go to jail, they were often treated like criminals and they had a lot of constraints on their lives in terms of which opportunities they could get. For one thing, working is so important for young men and they would be in jail in prime earning years. Also, many would have a hard time getting any kind of prestigious job, because of the stigma. Military service is such a big deal there, and there's a lot of nationalism wrapped up in the idea - it makes sense because they're technically still at war, but I suspect it creates an uncomfortable atmosphere for a lot of people.

I feel like the issue is one that isn't dissimilar to the way some (not all, so don't @ me) men treat women. It boils down to toxic masculinity...they are left feeling like they have to prove they are, in some way, superior to the idols--especially the flower boys. I'm pretty sure it's not limited to the SK military, either. I live in the USA, so my opinion probably isn't really pertinent, but if it matters at all, I feel like these young men have been serving their country in multiple ways, already, and deserve to be allowed to continue to do so--without being conscripted. I understand the thinking behind mandatory service, but if athletes or classical musicians deserve exemption, then BTS have more than earned it, as well. In a video I saw the other day, a soldier was asked if they should be exempted, and he said basically the same thing: he was serving in his way, and they are serving in theirs. Sorry for the lengthy reply, but in short, the risks of forcing them into mandatory service far outweigh the benefits.

Limited this scenario to idols is unfair. Harassment & abuse in military exist since forever & South Korea had few scandals with guys getting killed in military or taking their own life after being abused. G-Dragon’s unit & company proved repeatedly his ankle & arm injury that caused him to go to the hospital. He couldn’t eat without being watched, ppl used disguise to infiltrate the base & take pictures, men used drawings to place his likes, tattoos, scars, etc & sent that to their gf who then posted online, doctors released his medical records, even congressman attacked him, and the list goes on … this is why after military discharge he stayed silence for 4 years and didn’t exchange much with his fans. T.O.P tried to take his own life. Taemin suffers from depression & was transferred to public worker. Baekhyun received hate as he’s serving a public worker. There is this double standard in South Korea! You have to serve to be a real korean man, and not complain, harassment is part of hardships men should suffer, that’s nothing, but then a year after military discharge, public opinion starts to change and suddenly people feels empathic when they look back to what happened to these men! Reality is idols like men who suffered abuse in military can’t talk about it, as it’s part of a government propaganda. Taecyeon on the other hand, chose to give up his American citizenship to enlist in korean military as he received so much love from fans in Korea. That’s why they called him Captain Korea. He ate a lot and exercice a lot during his service, that’s why he bulked you so much. Regarding BTS, they won’t go through more than what others did before them, so it’s not a question rather they should go or not as many before then did, their exemption is tied to Hybe revenue as we all know it. Agency will lose more than half of their revenue if they enlist. Those members have been in depression for years & keep repeating it but nor the agency or the public seem to pay attention it. Fans are too busy fighting others over western achievements, rather than pointing out real issues in the idol system. Will military make them more depressed? Probably, like it did for everyone else. Should they receive special treatment? Definitely not. Preserving 7 persons while men are suffering in this whole system is hypocrite. What should be done is to reform the military in South Korea to stop mental abuse that affects idols but especially physical & mental abuse inflicted to men who serve for a period of 2 years in this country!
@Alicia-sr4hu

Not only Hybe will lose revenue, the entire country will. Bts brought in $3.5 BILLION to SK's economy in 2020!!! Thats prolly NOT including all the tourists they brought in. Losing revenue means losing jobs, etc...It has nothing to do with Hybes revenue. It plays more to that fact that Bts has been serving as SK ambassadors, next to they're president for many years, doing nothing but good for SK. Speaking at uncountable countries on behalf of SK. They've taken so much time, energy, & money by doing so. I highly doubt SK paid them to do all those things. Prolly didn't even pay for the airfare. It's time SK "GIVES BACK" to BTS & other idols, athletes, actors, & non-celebs that have contributed to SK. None off that accounts for anything??? It shoul atleast account for a little bit of revision in SK's military policy. Atleast some "military credit" for goodness sakes.

@@Alicia-sr4hu I know fans talk a lot about “revenue”. But actually, numbers need to be compared to make sense. The 1st Hallyu wave in 2003 brought a GDP = US$702.7 B. So the Hallyu contributed up to 0,2% to South Korea economy. Today GDP = US$1804.7 BTS brought US$4,9 B. so contributed up to 0,27% of South Korea economy. Which means their contribution is +0,07% vs 19 yrs ago! Meanwhile, South Korea’s GDP increased by 156.8% in 19 years. Reality is SoKor economy developed before & will continue to develop thanks to their companies. This is why the credit you’re talking about is an emotional discussion between fans, which I understand. I guess fans don’t want not to see their idols for 2 years. I’am going to post a comment here tomorrow after I get home from work & settled before I go bed. As since the BTS military news has dropped, it’s had a ripple effect globally & not commenting tomorrow as a fan of ARMY! But from a psychiatrist point of view, after so much research being lucky enough in my field, we’re sent videos, magazines, papers etc that are 1st based & backed with facts & from very reliable sources. Importantly & respectfully from ex military members, normal Korean citizens, to some public figure’s. A brave Korean soldier did a interview with very reliable sources & had his identity protected. As he also stated, what goes on in there is not what is portrayed by the Korean government. It’s done for the so called ‘positive & honest truth’s’ to slowly trickle down & spread globally, to portray a good imagine, but it’s actually far from the truth! Truth always prevails slowly & unfortunately there’s more than SEXUAL HARASSMENT going on! Based on facts in Asia, awareness around mental health is a taboo subject, it’s not talked about in households & if so frowned upon & belittled. Men are coming out the military with more than PTSD. Like it/not truth bombs as a psychiatrist shall be shared tomorrow. Not attacking Korean citizens, but to open eyes & know the world is watching, know & have severe concerns for ALL KOREAN MEN! Bare in mind BTS have economically helped Korea & since their global rise people globally have invested so much time to learn more about Korea which is amazing, please believe me when I say so, people really care about you all in Korea & not just BTS. I’am from UK 🇬🇧 & a British Indian woman. I hope the message tomorrow will give Korean men, citizens & families some faith after reading it all with a open mind. Not reading with a narrow mind, reflect & understand. I do know 🇬🇧 are going to make noise, to help give you men & not just BTS positive change. It’s been shocking for us in the medical field, in 🇬🇧 to have seen a negative ripple effect on people since the news of BTS & military aired. Unfortunately here in UK we’ve been preparing long shift’s & I know will be for a while, as soon shall get worse from a ripple effect & become a negative rapid domino effect. We need to be prepared to help our citizens here. Please know many people of power here from many backgrounds & also normal citizen’s, including myself have either already sent out formal letter’s to people of power, especially Korean gov & people of power & many are in process of doing so. Body experts have also been observing normal citizens of Korean mens footage men prior serving & after, also public figure’s & now also BTS body language prior. As it’s very obvious you men don’t have a voice & it’s heartbreaking to sit here with privileges & DO NOTHING to try help you. They can’t say, “Army help us make noise for our government to review & exempt us from military duties. Instead they’ve put on that brave happy face & not once put Korea or Korean government down. So globally I promise we will do all we can to help make change for you. Doesn’t matter Korean or not, unity is a must & we’re trying to exactly do that & hope when you read my message tomorrow you’ll understand. In the mean time, I send you all nothing but love & well wishes. Remember it’s ok not to be ok & I know it’s hard to speak out, but know if you need someone to talk to, I’ll do everything to help you as psychiatrist. Just comment, as soon as I’ve read & responded, you can delete your comment & after you respond to mine, I shall delete it straight away after responding to yours. That way it’s not left here forever for trolls to read & come after you. I promise your not the 1st in Korea I will be doing this for & it’s been a way that works the best & hopefully I can give you some comfort. You are not alone, please do not suffer in silence. What happened to GD makes me so mad and I have to vent so pass on by if you hate long comments. When everything was happening, I was just shocked at how other netizens and kpop fandoms were taking it. Rather than point out the harassment and call out the soldiers in the military, they blamed GD and said he was getting "special treatment" for getting hospitalized. The man is EXTREMELY thin and that much taxing activity would definitely result in injuries, which explains his ankle injury. If you knew anything about him you'd see that he's not someone who is lazy. This man puts his entire soul into his work and has legit passed out multiple times from overworking himself to give his best. Even in the military, he'd likely apply that same effort to try to do well. Even so, he wasn't fit enough to pass the physical tests and all that. Even a medical professional released his personal information. His personal privacy was invaded so many times and all the while people were just blaming HIM and sending HIM d*ath threats saying he was getting this "special treatment" when in fact he was having a hard time and was very likely extremely uncomfortable the entire service due to the harassment. It's no wonder that GD was pissed when his service ended and he totally ignored the media when he greeted the fans. He's one of the kindest and most humble artists I've ever known. He didn't deserve to be treated like that.

Bullying and harassment is NEVER okay in whatever industry and under whatever circumstance. Unfortunately, the military appears to be a common "industry" where this occurs. Sure, learn to defend your country and countrymen as a team, but some things must remain private. I agree with some other comments that if the country makes the service mandatory then the country needs to make sure the person returns to their family whole and, at least, the same or, at best, better than they were before. So either no exceptions, or very specific exceptions as issues arise. If I had a vote, I would vote for specific exceptions/modifications/accommodations as the need arises; always keeping the mental and physical wellbeing of your countrymen at the forefront but still training them in case (hopefully not) there is a call to action. Because guys, don't forget why South Korea has mandatory military service; and this is all the more reason why the military should train their young men but still keep them safe while they're in training!

I sincerely think the military has to do away with all bullying and harassment. This problem is not unique to Korea, although the mandatory nature adds new elements as yes celebrities but more so that everyone participates for the most part and, therefore, there ought to be more incentive to make the system better, safe and healthy for all. DP was largely based on several true events. I don't think celebrities should exempt because EVERY young man is vulnerable and celebrities actually get more protection because of who they are and their connections. It is the folks without any clout that are more vulnerable to bullying, harassment and assault. BTS should go and they should work to try to make the system better then they will be heroes to all Korean males. I don't think Korea is about to abandon the system any time soon but serious reform should be the goal and zero tolerance for abuse of any sort. Not hard to install even half shower stalls so everyone has some privacy but isn't at risk and why not have rotating shower times. A lot of simple solutions the military should be implementing if they want to continue to ask the young men of Korea to sacrifice their freedom for two years.

What other Korean celebrity has spoken at the UN, the White House, and been given diplomatic envoy status? What other Korean celebrity has contributed as much to the economy of Korea? This is why Baekhyun had to be transferred to a safer shower area according to 1 of his military colleagues due to the fact that a lot of people flock to their area to see him. I am glad that we've received a lot of infos from the military that our EXO boys are well liked and respected and being protected by their colleagues and officers and NOT BECAUSE they are idols but due to them being great at what they do inside the military. I am not a fan of BTS, but if SK govt gives them special treatment and allows them to be exempted or whatnot, people should let it be. I guess they earn it by being the most popular boygroup these days and somehow bringing pride to their country.

The guys enlist (conscript) to serve their country, not the sick pervasions of other males in the military. Military is supposed to be a place of high discipline. By allowing such behavior, what message is the Korean military telling the country and the rest of the world? Is this the standard of their discipline? Is such lack of respect for fellow HUMANS acceptable when they fight war? On the other hand I can't name a single Korean Olympic medalist but I bet a billion people worldwide can name 1 or more BTS member or kpop idol. The exemption justification is nebulous. I agree with you that the administration and trouble caused by their celebrity distracts from the mission. I think attending basic training to get soldier skills and then be an inactive reservist would be a good compromise. Training as a unit creates camaraderie and esprit de corps you can't get by being isolated from the others though. There should be some military legal penalty for these privacy invasions to deter this very odd peeping in the shower behavior.

I came back to this because Jin has been harassed in the shower not long ago after moving to his new position as a commander trainee. Another Commander trainee said he was passing by the shower and said how Jin is a "World Star down there too." He posted this to his IG account. It seems odd that regular soldiers can post on their social media accounts, but idols can't? Is there an intentional system to keep them silent? There were other concerns that he was injured on his head, loss of hair and redness in that front forehead area. I thought it was a haircut gone bad, but they are saying it's the helmet causing an allergic reaction. Posted complaints is that the mil is not taking him to the hospital because of the optics. They also say that if it is not treated the hair loss and allergic reaction could get worse. But then you see in that graduation ceremony, Jin is rolling his left shoulder frequently and he was limping on one side which might be the result of him getting flipped in the hand-to-hand combat training. His hip might be bruised. I like that there were people tending to him to make sure he looked good, but that was then. The next stage is another level of concern. Information is still being leaked about him. He won a dance competition so he gets a day off. How convenient. Maybe he will use it to go to his usual doctor if that is necessary. I have to say, anyone who messes with him has to be brave. Their names are being reported to HYBE protect every time. The guy who posted about Jin's naked body was warned by other trainees and people on his account to take it down. So he took it down. Look how he will not face any punishment from the military. No wonder that culture continues.

All of that shower stuff sounds horrifying. I hate the thought of ANYONE having to go through that kind of harassment. I understand why some of them are having ptsd. I appreciate making lemonade out of lemons and choosing to view a traumatic experience as a learning experience but there are limits to how that plays out. AND...wrong is wrong. I agree with some other comments...the shower situation is a much broader problem that the government needs to address. It is definitely a bad "look" for the Korean military. Some of the exceptions that you spoke of lead me to again wonder why they are struggling so hard to NOT exempt BTS...as if there are NEVER exceptions made. Exceptions are made every day in almost every industry. You figure it out as it comes up. Lets;s be honest, there are not a ton of other idols at the level of BTS. Whether those 7 men serve in the military is not going to make or break the military. Just give them the exemption and then figure it out after that. I know that sounds unfair, but the number of ways that you can currently quantify how BTS has already served their country makes for a long list. And everything that you spoke of in this video is going to be magnified by a million when applied to what BTS members will experience if nothing is figured out ahead of time.

I could not have said it better! Thanks for these sane words! Usually the solution for anything is a simple one. It becomes complicated only when other interests are not allowing the obvious to happen. Hybe now should stand up for BTS and show their loyalty for these 7 men who made it possible for Hybe to exist. But even if they cannot make BTS to be exampt from the military, they should provide protection for the boys. There is always a way to do that. But the most effective thing anybody could do is to start a campaign against harassment in the military and make things stransparent regarding it and make it a punishable offence if things happen otherwise. There will always be stupid people who are trying to get revenge for their suffer in life on nonrelated people, so I think that the public should speak up and start a campaign to protect their loved ones who have to serve in the military. If BTS cannot get exemption, the Korean BTS " Army" better to be prepared to make loud noise about what happens in their military so not only BTS can be saved but all the others.

@itsnlee
@itsnlee 2 жыл бұрын
To begin with, the fact that a doctor released GD's private and personal information already violates 2 laws. It's not even malpractice, it's a crime. He should be jailed alongside being banned from practice permanently. I had no idea about the showering issue in the military except the frequent sexual assaults based from another video I'd stumbled on. One would think these had become normalized considering nothing has been done to stop it. Those who might complain that it's not fair idols get "special treatment" needs to realize it's literally for their safety since they're basically being thrown in shark infested waters, where there are no bodyguards that usually protect them from such harassments. Putting these measures in place likely doesn't even make the service any easier than for non-idol individuals. It'll still be a tough 2 years. I think my greatest shock with the showers is due to the fact that it's communal. I can't even fathom why anyone would think it's a good idea to not install doors other than to encourage the violation of privacy. In the UK, the public pools have separate shower cubicles with LOCKS. I'm a BTS fan and at the beginning I didn't want them to go solely because of the innocent fact that I'll miss them, but at the same time thinking it's best they go because no doubt people would scream that it's unfair for them to be exempted and specially treated. After D.P and few videos shedding light on this matter, to imagine them knowingly walk into the hell that awaits them is unthinkable. And I'm certain they aren't blissfully ignorant of what happens to idols in there. The military service is supposed to be viewed as a duty and demands respect, but how can the public - Korean or not - see it this way knowing the system sleeps on the crimes that take place within it? The civilians are expected to serve to protect their country, but what of the country that fails to protect the civilians and victims. Thank you for making this video, it'll bring a lot of awareness.

Can you imagine how incredibly distracting and unsafe for everyone it would be to have the biggest stars in the world just thrown in there with everyone with no privacy or protection? If the idols are assaulted or murdered the backlash against the South Korean government would be EXTREME. BTS and many other idols are already constantly receiving death threats and can't go anywhere without tons of security. Aside from that, how are soldiers expected to stay focused and control themselves when faced with being in contact with the world wide celebrities? It would get out of control really fast. And now they have to worry about being watched in the showers and potentially being subjected to other forms of sexual harassment once they enlist because of their celebrity status? Disgusting. No celebrity should suffer abuse just because of their celebrity status. OK Taecyeon was downright scary playing the role of Jang Jun-woo in Vincenzo. But learning what he suffered in the military gives his portrayal of the role an entirely different context. He may have actually used his memories of those awful experiences to channel his anger into his portrayal of Jang Jun-woo. I am a non Korean viewer of K-drama/K-pop and so I have tried my best to not talk about the enlistment as it is not my right. Though, after having seen the DP K-drama and this video with the shower issues I really feel anxious about any famous Korean guy going for the enlistment. As BTS enlistment is the most closest at the moment, especially Jin and Suga of BTS, I am genuinely worried about it now. The Korean government should at least put some laws to protect them from harassment and I personally believe that such rules should be for all guys in there, famous or not. No one deserves harassment and abuse like that. Being objected to harassment and abuse is not the way to make a man out of a boy.

I'm more of a Big Bang VIP and they did their military duty. That said - hazing in the military is so wrong - it's like the prison system - the guards/officials act as if it's ok - and after (many years ago) watching Full Metal Jacket. It made me wary of people in and out of the military... Also, if the people that are doing it and are not going to be in the military as a career and taken photos with the intent to sell - I'd be scared of a lawsuit.

Everyone is talking about BTS but y'all, this is for ALL our idols. BTS will likely be more protected bc of their superstar status, but the idols with less popularity, they'll have it even worse 💔💔 NO PERSON should have to undergo conscription.

I disagree, I think their superstar status will make it worse. Unless serious changes happen before they enlist, once they’re there there’s no one to protect them, no bodyguards, no managers. And if GD went through that harassment, imagine how many “curious” men there’ll be for the most famous stars in the world.

Now, I really hope that BTS gets exempted. I think they have already served the country by bringing in so much to S Korea’s economy and promoting Korean culture globally. I feel bad for G-Dragon that he had to go through what he did. Do you think BTS’ concert in Busan in October, promoting the World Expo for 2030, will help their case? Jin turns 30 in December. Will the government wait till the last minute to determine their fate?

I am heartsick and furious over this awful behaviour towards our Idols while they are showering,such a vulnerable and embarrassing time anyway,and to be harassed and abused continuously is just terrible. Something must be done and immediately. No excuse for torturing these men, who are there to serve their country,not develope PTSD. Thank you for speaking on this subject,it needs to be brought up more often.

A fix to this is if you are famous/public figure they just do 3 weeks of basic training then out. Looking at it from the military stand point, having rich or famous people in the military is a distraction. In the USA if you get famous or super rich while in the military, lottery as example, you are removed from service. They send you home basically. It is a distraction and those who are rich and famous typically have no reason to perform to their best.

They watched KYUHYUN (Super Junior) in the shower like he was an animal in a zoo. It must have been a horrible feeling. And it's even worse because he doesn't like to show his body because of the scar he has from the car accident he had years ago, which almost took his life. I like all these idols and feel for them.

You should write a letter to the president. Telling him these situations. Tell him it’s not right for idols to be sexually harassed by other people in the military including officers. I saw one guy was raped. Imagine Park Jimin in the military. He will come back broken. In conclusion, if they can’t have their rights protected or their bodies from being sexually harassed then they should not go!!!!

Just listening to this is horror to me cuz i know those horrific situations are real. The top ppl in the military should do something about that. Otherwise a man get into military as a person n comes out as zombie cuz they suffer mental illness. The goals to put young men into military is to produce strong men physically and mentally to deffend the country if needed. What's the point if the opposite happens ??

I wondered about Ok Taecyeon in his role in Vincenzo (which was AMMMMMAAAZING). Yeah, it seemed more real than not. It will be absolutely devastating for some of the BTS members. Others, like Suga and perhaps RM, have tougher exteriors and resolve. Even so, no matter how tough you are, when it's 1 vs 20, you're on the losing side. And, Korean society is much more interdependent than U.S. Meaning, isolation for any of the Bangtan Boys will have severely destructive effects. Esp for Jin and Jimin. For Jin & Jimin they will be tortured and probably permanently emotionally scarred, never to be the same person again. Hell, Jin can't even mingle at a listening party for his hyung with people he doesn't know. How's he going to handle the Army? I also think that given the lives they've all led up to now, military enlistment is going to feel like prison and a jail sentence. For all intents and purposes they've come of age in the entertainment industry. It truly is astonishing that the military leadership wouldn't want to remedy this horrible reputation. It doesn't build morale and it certainly doesn't make citizens especially loyal to their country.
