Thank you so much! I've tended to knit my socks toe-up because I couldn't find a stretchy cast on I liked. I hate longtail type cast ons, and when I'd watched other slip knot cast ons, I struggled to follow exactly what they were doing. I've now cast on a cuff down sock, my cast on is nice and neat, and incredibly stretchy!

Thank you for this. I find it to be the easiest way to do the slip-knot cast-on, and how very nice that you don't need to measure the tail to do it and can use it in the middle of a project to cast on additional stitches.

You did a terrific job slowly and thoroughly demonstrating the moves needed to do it. I ended up messing around with it a bit more with various kinds of yarn. It's a bit rough to do with super bulky yarn or some of those creative yarns they make now with sort of twirly outer strands surrounding one solid inner strand that's not stretchy. It can be done, though, and you just have to work very slowly and carefully. This works like butter on standard acrylic worsted weight, sport weight, or DK yarn and even some of the thinner crochet threads. By the way, your mittens are gorgeous.

In the Cabled Dad Mittens, the version with the mitten flap, is the thumb open at the end even when worn as a closed mitten?

You have the option to leave the thumb open or to close it up-there are instructions for both options in the pattern. I've done it both ways, and I prefer the open thumb on my right hand and a closed thumb on my left. Everyone will have a different preference, I expect.

I join a slip-knot cast-on to work in the round in the normal way-- just make sure your edge isn't twisted. There may be a fancy way to reduce the appearance of a jog. This hasn't been an issue for me so I haven't investigated alternate techniques. Please let me know if you run across something. I imagine that you could cast on an extra stitch and then join in the round, slipping the last stitch to the left needle and then knit both first and last sts together. This is a technique that I've uses with a standard cast-on to reduce the jog and it would probably work in this scenario too.

Does it matter if you pick up the back thread from the top or bottom?

Hi Pat, Thanks for your comment! If you pick up the back thread from a different direction, the loop will twist in a different direction. As long as you are consistent, it should all work out.

No matter how hard I try I can't make a small distance between knots: either I pull the knot through or I get a huge distance. :/ I watched several tutorials but I have the same problem.

Hi X-Ren-X, That is certainly the trickiest part of this technique. I mention in my video how I manage this, but I think the key is to get the spacing right before dropping off the original loop, and holding that second loop in place with my thumb as I complete the last steps. In other words, you need to make sure the second loop is tight up against the previous stitch on the needle before dropping the original loop off your needle. You can see at the 1:26 and 2:14 marks how I kind of wiggle my left hand slightly to adjust the tension before I drop the original loop. I hope this helps! Good luck with your project!
