nice video guys! I own a T3 syncro and a T5 4motion with rear difflock. T3 has the advantage of the front , rear lock and a good ground clearance , but not so much engine power . T5 4motion with rear diff lock has a much better engine power but the ground clearance is lower . If I had to choose only one of them I will go with T5 . It's much easier to rise the ground clearance on a T5 , than changing the engine on a T3 to have the power that you need ( legal upgrades ).

1:42 neat thing to notice here and after: What helped the T4 there is its "electronic differential lock" which uses the abs sensors to brake the front wheel wich doesn't have traction in order to send power to the wheel that has. Might not be as effective as a mechanical differential locker, but it can help you out greatly as shown here

This is undeniably the case for the T5 and T6, but are you sure this is already the case for the T4? For me it looks like this is rather good luck for the T4 and your comment reflects what happens in the T5/6. This doesn't automatically make me crave a T3, they're incredibly expensive to buy these days and even when in good conditions they command high maintenance and the engine never lasted very much. But it's easy to see why they've been so popular and are still so much sought after today: it's like an alpine ibex, it is able to climb where no other van (and most vehicles) wouldn't even dare.

Please, let me to add something more. The t3 has a “gelande”, (extremely short), gear for rock crawling and vertical walls overcoming. In a test like this it is not counting, although is tremendously important and has to do with the engine torque and the way it is distributed through the kinetic chain. Another aspect, unique for the t3, is the front, (optional), locker which, cannot be compared to the EDL, for the off road, the other models have, since it can feed, if it is needed, just the one front wheel, with 100% power, smoothly and without the clicking effect of the EDL, which EDL, transfers torque in a very limited portion. This limitation is not obvious in this test but is real under off road loading. The VCT of the t3 is unique, also, since is protected into a cell and it is liquid cooled, a really heavy duty VCT, BUT just for the front wheels. And here is another superiority of the t3, since, when loaded, the power is needed to the rear axle mainly, where the load is, especially when there is an obstacle. The t3, and only the t3, has gears to drive the rear axle where the others have “soft” solutions, VCT or, especially, HALDEX, (t5, t6). For the t3, the rear axle is the primary, another heavy duty structure, superior to any other member of the test, and the front axle is the secondary, best schedule for a, heavy duty, military tool, 4x4 car. Here is a comparison between the t3 SYNCRO VCT and HALDEX: www.vwsyncro.eu/p/vs-t5-4motion-haldex.html Syncro HUMP phenomenon, and why the Syncro VCT is capable to transfer from 5% up to 100% of power, at demand, smoothly, without vibrations, at any speed, without limits, without service, (or with very limited, in worst case scenario), (no, HALDEX cannot): www.vwsyncro.eu/p/blog-page_5.html Now, both Syncros, the t3 and the t4, may use their handbrake to lock the rear differential in the case the rear locker is not available. And you now something? When you engage the handbrake you brake the 4 wheels simultaneously! Very useful as a hill descent control for the t3 and the t4! The t4, with the exception of the, optional, rear locker, has the same Syncro system as the passenger Syncros have, the year 1988 after, (b5 Syncro excluded, it is a Quattro). And it has an extra free wheel structure, which stabilizes the car under heavy braking. Both, t3 and t4, may lock the rear and the front differentials, just by applying their brakes: www.vwsyncro.eu/p/blog-page_88.html (Few facts about the superb passive safety the t3 has: www.vwsyncro.eu/p/blog-page_18.html). The T3 out performed all the VW vans, albeit with more driver intervention regarding selecting the appropriate diff to lock. It also did it with less strain on the drive train. The key thing is to remember to disengage the diff lock{s}. when no longer required. I was expecting the T3 to be the winner. No fancy electronics or utilising the ABS.
@Kobluk2 жыл бұрын
But without the diff lock it would not perform that well, you could also opt in for rear diff locks in all T versions and T5 got out from all situations without it.
@robpeabo5092 жыл бұрын
@@Kobluk I agree without the diff locks it would not perform that well, however it does have the diff locks, and once locked it was able to move with far less effort and strain on the drivetrain. The T5 did very well, however it relies on the traction aids to "brake" the wheels that are slipping so the drive can go to the wheel(s) with traction. These systems can overheat, or slip whereas the diff locks can't. I am not against traction aids, my own LR3 has them, and it is great. I am making an observation about which vehicle performed better in my opinion with the aids it has.
