I lived a privileged life so at the time when I hadn't yet experienced anything bad I couldn't see the appeal in Slipknot. Give it a few years with a streak of awful events piling up and I slowly started to lose it. Two of my friends were killed by a drunk driver, a couple of family members were dying one by one in the same year, and I woman I loved left me. That same year I remember holding a .357 Magnum to my head. Believe me when I say, in the strangest way possible that Slipknot saved me. I saw them live and was severely hurt in those mosh pits where I found myself again. I've been calm like Buddha ever since. Thank you Paul and Joey. You guys saved me from myself.
@laurenm62623 жыл бұрын
This album will always hold a special place in my heart. It got me through some awful shit in my teens. My parents were worried when they heard this blasting from my room, when in actual fact it was this album that got me through the worst of it! I'm so glad I found slipknot 16 or so years ago, I praise this band for allowing me to take my anger out through music and not on myself. Iowa still feels like a stress reliever when I listen to it. I owe these guys a lot.

I relate 100% to this! Some people think that music like this makes the listeners aggressive, I think it has the exact opposite effect in most cases. The friendliest crowds I've been in have been at metal gigs, I've always felt a sense of unity. You strike up conversations with random strangers and in general, people are looking out for each other. As far as aggression goes, I always find that music like this calms me down, if I've had a shitty or frustrating day, then bands like Slipknot exorcise the anger for me without me feeling like I need to go out and punch a hole in a wall, if that makes sense. Well, it *will* make sense to other fans, if other people don't like it and don't get it, fuck 'em!

I've had some time to let it sink in, gather my thoughts, and reflect on Joey's death. It's funny, getting older and revisiting music that you clung to so dearly when you were growing up. You move on and realize that many of the things that pushed you into the anger and hate that consumed you then have all passed you by; we see things differently and have learned either how to reconcile those things or have eliminated them entirely. Shawn Crahan himself put it perfectly in regards to letting all of the hate go: "I know a part of me would have been really sad that I never got better." For years I came to view my anger and angst as the only things that could define me. I buried myself in them and used them as coping mechanisms. But deep down I hated how I felt. I just wanted to be happy. It's immature to try and hold onto the feelings and ideologies and sentimentalities that you had growing up. While for me I always related and will continue to relate to the line from Nirvana's "Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle", "I miss the comfort of feeling sad"; I know I can't live like that forever. It's fucking exhausting. Listening to Slipknot today brings me back to when I was a teen and I smile. I remember how life was then and how far I've come. I still remember all the words to their first two albums, but all the anger that poured out of me is gone. I see the band as the people they are, and as I've learned about their personal lives and what they sacrificed for their music, I respect them tremendously. They were the band people loved to hate for their outfits and gimmicks and nu-metal trappings, but man, those guys put everything into their art. Joey was the first drummer I knew by name, by face, and by style. He was insane. That dudes music filled a huge majority of my high school years and Im happy I had it. Having people youve never met understand your feelings and convey them into art you could never make was the greatest sense of release for me. Now most of the lyrics sound kinda dorky, but I remember how I felt when I was younger. This is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Regardless of what Ive listened to since and will listen to in the future, this is still Top 5 for me. This shit gets me fuckin JUICED. And thats the thing with metal, man: good metal ages like a fine wine and it brings positivity through negativity. It's the perfect release and reflection of whats brewing deep inside. You let it out and all that's left is the calm. Here's to you Joey.

I'm listening to this after like 15 years since listening to it the last time and this album is just so good on so many levels. I know exactly why I liked to listen to it. Instruments and vocals are mixed so well, everyone sounds like they're at their best. The songwriting is real good on this. It's dynamic, heavy when it needs to be with quiet breaks where they need to be. The lyrics are relatable for lonely or disenfranchised. Being a teenager can be really intense

Crazy how I listened to this in fifth grade, got my younger sister into it, I always wanted to get my youngest sister into this kind of music. You never really think about music you felt so hard for no reason as a kid, sometimes eventually you’ll have all the reason in the world to feel that shit to a T and it’s a wild realization. Music connects to us mentally more than we know. You might not necessarily want to show your young ones angry music you liked at their age. You never know how much more balls they could have than you.

Great music transcends time and genres..Iowa was created when alot of the band were in dark dark places in their personal lives...YET...they were following up the success of the first album..and they came suuuper hard...So much so that their other albums after Iowa have never reached this level of darkness anger and overall agression..A perfect mix of anger and passion self loathing and super precise pedal work by Joey. Excellent guitar riffs and some of the darkest lyrics Corey has ever given us. Iowa is and will always be the definition of what slipknot is. Their sound has evolved over the years but this album is top 3 all time in the metal genre..It doesnt get much better than this

Raziel Venice not even just there personal lives but in the studio as well, because their producer was beating them and giving them all sorts of drugs. The screams in the Intro 515 is Sid in the vocal booth screaming and puking and dying from an over dose. They were all kinds of fucked up while making this album. Mick says in an interview that he would love to slit the producer of this albums throat because of what he put them through during this.

First Slipknot album I ever heard when I was 13! By just listening to the whole thing it makes me feel that age again. It's July 31st, Summer of 2005, just four days after my birthday, and my sisters and I are walking around waiting for the movies to start after buying tickets. we walk into a music store and one of them buys this album, and after the movies we're in the car heading home and she starts blasting it and I could not believe what I was hearing. It was the best shit I ever heard man and that's when I fell in love with Slipknot's music and I fuckin loved this entire album ever since 🖤! The songs on the CD, especially My Plague reminds me of how I felt about starting 7th grade at my new middle school that new year. Anxious to start but nervous about how it was gonna be like since it was completely different from my old elementary school with new kids and new teachers. This entire album, mostly Disasterpieces, Heretic Anthem, and People = Shit represent the pure distilled rage and anger that makes us capable of very unsavory acts. Skin TIcket is the best Slipknot song IMO and this is why: 40:46 the Hate starts to build up. 41:02 You take the anger out on other people, desperately trying them to understand 41:15 failing to understand why noone gets you (building more tension with someone) and realizing that there is no end to your suffering (whatever it is) 41:27 breaking point into complete insanity. This is where murders and other scary shit happens. 42:20 final breakdown. The end - suicide
