Okay...now I'm lost... I was always told to use my wrist for alternate/tremolo picking,but yet I see this gentleman here kicking major ass on these riffs, but by using his elbow. I'm assuming it more if a personal preference thing then?

Use your wrist. Is it impossible to to git good when picking using the elbow? No. Should you learn it? Probably not. James Hetfield holds his pick with 3 fingers and he's a beast, bu that doesn't mean 3 fingers are the easiest/most efficient.
