The first time you hear almost any kind of music, the presentation comes first. If you don’t get the music, you will have a tendency to look no further. Tupac taught me to listen. He was my breakthrough artist. He taught me to look beyond the music for something deeper. I was a straight up metal head. Loved the music, totally into the message of many songs, but was what I call genre blind. That’s why I have loved watching your musical journey. Consider yourself woke😂🤣😂 And for those who don’t get it? All you can do is try to open their minds. Not easy in a society that only seems to want to see the talking points without understanding the conversation. So thank you for sharing your journey. Even for those of us already on the road, your journey takes us to a great place!

Heavy metal is 'scary' for many. Too unhinged. When people are scared they lash out. Put off balance, they react with anger & be negative to defend themselves. Weird, really. But glad I came (cuz of Jamal's 'haters' video about not listening to the lyrics, etc). Doubt I will be a fan, but like Disturbed. Never would have found their 'Down With The Sickness' if not for their fantastic cover of S&G 'Sound of Silence'. There are great musicians in every genre everywhere, just not enough of them. Good that Jamal hunts and finds them for us. 'Peace out' from a 70 yr 'old foggy'.
@useddentalfloss24843 жыл бұрын
@@rk41gator True spoken. I'm a metalhead, I'm also into NYHC. I never, ever judge someone based on their music scene. But I just expect to be judged on mine. And I don't take offense to it, because I get it. Metal, NYHC, it's about being mad as hell quite frankly. NYHC takes it a step further by singing or screaming about solutions to those problems vs your standard angry metal song. And it's not everyone's vibe. Especially today, when anger is expressed in so many other ways. So while I expect to be judged, I don't hold a grudge about it. And rather, explain what it's all about. You'd be surprised how many people are open minded to the *idea* of metal, just not the sound.
@rk41gator3 жыл бұрын
@@useddentalfloss2484 Good comment. I remember when the music of the '60s and '70s was considered outrageous, subversive and un-American. There was real anger then too. The music was supposed to be all those things and more. It agitated and changed minds (and hardened others). But all the judging involved a lot of assumptions. Jumping to conclusions with out knowing the facts or the 'why'. Guess human nature does not change, only our acceptance of it. Sometimes we NEED to feel uncomfortable.

I get it. I hear elements of punk, emo, Black Sabbath, and their influence on metal core. I am sorry the community took two steps back here in the comments. When I dislike a song ya know what I do? That's an incredibly open-minded approach, especially considering how hard Slipknot goes. Good for you! I think the key to appreciating their music is to just listen before watching their music videos (which can be quite graphic and can distract from the music). At least, that's what worked for me. And even then, even as a metalhead, there are still some songs from them that I don't care for. And that's A-OK! It doesn't take away from the tracks I _do_ like. 🤘😁

Their aesthetic can turn off some folks, even those who generally like metal. They're not generally a very radio friendly band, shall we say? They've got a shock element that can obscure their talent sometimes. That said, they definitely have some remarkable tunes (and some duds too) and one heck of a stage presence. The very fact that they're an 8-piece band with 3 percussionists, 2 guys who are basically DJs, and up to 3 vocals (Corey's lead vocals) gives them potential to do some musically crazy stuff, layering sound like mad. Rick Beato's got a pretty cool breakdown (using the isolated instrument tracks) of their song "Duality" where he dives into the complexity of their music.

The people who don't like it probably didn't click on the video. So what are you trying to do, find the one or two people in the comments section to agree with you so you feel better about YOUR opinion? What a waste of time. If it's not your thing you can just move along to something that is. And if you watched his video you would see that he says it's okay if you don't like everything. His point and a point I made in a recent comment section is about the people that dismiss without looking into it. And not just sonically. If it's not for your ears that's cool, but when people say things like I won't listen to so and so because they are devil worshippers or something crazy like that, it's like some old outdated idea of what metal is all about. And not just metal, it happens with rap artists too. They'll hear a hip-hop beat and automatically assume it will be dirty or violent. Open your mind before you judge, but by no. Means is no one saying you can't have an opinion. And I hate that people who get criticized by how they come at a subject go straight to that. Like, oh "I can't have an opinion?" "You're trying to impede my freedom of speech?" Stop. STOP.

I took Jamel’s call to ask us to keep our minds open and to at least treat each other with respect. Our whole country is falling apart because everyone seems to judge immediately whether something falls into preconceived categories of “with us” or “against us”, shuts his ears and mind, and relegates the entire person to ally or enemy. I don’t want to live in a country where half the people hate the other half. I played this song three times. The third time I heard a lot more than the first time. The “hidden rage” is within all of us more or less, usually from an early age. Fears and confusions without solutions, undealt with, creates growing rage, “The Devil in I”. How do I solve this before it tears me apart? Please help if you know the answer. That’s what I took from it. The Vocalist has a nice voice, perfect for the music. The drums reminded me of Alex Van Halen, and the rhythms were intense and spot on. We have to stick together or we have no future. Please try to be respectful. “You’ll realize I’m not your Devil anymore.”

If you get the chance to see them in concert, go. They are amazing in concert. I see them every chance I get.

I love the vocals. It must be so physically demanding to change between different techniques like this without messing up.

Try some Jinjer and Opeth.

You should see him cover Purple rain and his cover of Wicked game. He is a very versatile singer. Actually, no one tops his vocal range except for maybe Mike Patton

@@sadiedouglas5208 I can't say yes or no because never saw Tool live. But if you saw them both live and thought Tool rocked, awesome

You know, this song isn't my jam, but that's ok. I like a couple of their other songs. Thumb's up for reacting to it. Keep reacting to everything man!

Of a lot of metal groups Slipknot is one that has some melodic singing. I'd love a reaction of something Metal that is in the throat 100% of the time! Like, Harakiri for the Sky. Song Fire Walk with Me.

I'll further this comment with the idea of a Metal Genre series of vids!! One for each metal genre, of which there are something like 24.

This song is on Slipknot's CD The Gray Chapter which is honor of one of the founding members Paul Gray who sadly overdosed in a hotel room. The reference to the word Devil in the song is about drug addiction and in this case I believe it is cocaine. My mom bought me this cd for my 50th birthday. She won't listen to Slipknot and only knows about them because of me, my son, and my nephew. She really surprised me by buying me this cd but she knows how much I love Slipknot and how upset I was over Paul Gray's death.

I've heard of Slipknot, but I don't know their music really. That's a great song though.

Great stuff! Check out Zzyzx Road by Stone Sour, Corey's other band, his voice on that is also incredible.

We shall see. Harry Mack btw. Check it I know it's not you ev n in private he's the only person musically related I've seen that's as positive as you but he is simply on a road of 1 right now he's so good at his craft

Some people want to hear the exact album when seeing a show...I love hearing bands subtly evolve their songs over time when playing them Live🔴

Saw slipknot when I was 9 at the subliminal verses tour. Bam was at the show and I tried telling my brother and cousin that Bam was right there and they didn't believe me lol. Slipknot comes out on stage and shouts out "bam margera in the building!" 😂 could've definitely met him and at the time we were all really big into skating

I gotta say it brother I watched a different youtubers reaction and the guy was kinda disrespectful he acted like he didn't know one verse of the song and yet he read the title of the song lol I just found him to make silly very unnecessary remarks but on the reverse side I come watch this video and I love that you walked into this with an open mind Love it and I love slipknot

Reminiscent of Ramstein I think. If I listened to either for a long time, I think it would give me a headache, but I like both in small doses. I have the same reaction to Reggae, not the headache part, but best savored in small doses.

Corey Taylor said that one of his major influences was Faith No More. Rammstein and Slipknot have nothing in common imo
