Unfortunately, we are currently unable t give junior doctors/medical students/optometrist/nurses a face-to-face hands on tutorial on using a slit lamp due to COVID rules on social distancing.
This video gives a basic introduction to the Slit Lamp Eye Examination. I will be going over the basic functions of a slit lamp and talking you through the systematic approach to examining the anterior segment of the eye.
Keep in mind that this is a practical skill and this video is an adjunct - so after you have watched the video I strongly recommend heading down to your clinical skills area in pairs to practice in person in a safe manner.

I have had 2 examinations at the opticians inc some sort of dye and they've thrown up nothing. Do you have any idea what this could be or what l could do next? I've used the blepharitis wipes and eye lubricant and they have not worked,

I don't understand how you get the second beam to examine the cornea, does it just come with you swing the light source to the side and make it tall and narrow?

Sir I have few queries 1. when u put that fluorescin dye inside the eye of pt and visualised under the cobalt blue filter.. I cud see the margins of eye became green. Why was it so. 2. Who is an observer in slit lamp examination ( it was written there observor or teaching eyepiece) 3. And sir it is a dark room procedure can we even perform it in a well lit room like u did. And everything was easily visible.

1. You will also see hyperfluorescence in areas where the dye pools - such at at the eyelid margins and in conjunctival folds. 2. Observer looking through a teaching eye piece is simply an extra eye piece enabling someone else visualise the examination. 3. A dimly lit room is preferred- the lights are on for teaching purposes for this video. Hope that helps 👌

I am living in south america, I had an appoiment with an ophthalmologist, he dilated my pupils and made me fundus, I went only for a simple consultation because I am 40 now and my wife advised me for a complete vision study, 4 days after the consultation I still saw blurry, So I went to visit another ophthalmologist to ask him what was wrong in the consultation he puts into my eyes an orange drops to tint them and he examined me with the slit lamp. He also told me that everithing was right but my condition worsened because by the afternoon I saw more blurred, it is difficult for me to see and even more when I look away and before the consultation I was fine, now it is 20 days since I have been like this, maybe you think that there was mismanagement of the slit lamps with maximum lights. I am very distressed I hope you can answer me. Blessings

@@citizenm9590 The lights used in ophthalmic instruments such as slit lamps and opthalmoscopes are not powerful enough to damage your vision. It is equivalent to what you would experience when looking into a torch/flashlight - there is no risk of damage to your eyes.

I was wondering if the combination of them using ophthalmoscope and Slit Lamp at the same time causing my eye issue since I didn't have this issue before the test. Do you know what might cause an eye issue after the examination if the lights in the slit lamps and opthalmoscopes are safe?

@@citizenm9590 They probably put some dilating drops in your eyes during the examination which are known to cause dryness and irritation in some people. I would say try some over the counter artificial tears and hot compresses to see if that helps.
