Fascinating, thank you! I had never before noticed in a slit scan that all moving figures moving in the same axis as the slit progression end up appearing to be traversing the scene only in the direction of the slit motion. It's logical enough but until I saw the video creation of your resulting photo I had no reason to assume anything other than that all character/object motions were indeed in one direction!

Yeah. If on the slit-scan photo somebody faces in a different direction, that means that he was walking backwards, i.e. walking where his back faces.

Finally a video that actually shows how this works, i've watched over 2 hours of youtube videos now and only 45 seconds of your video was all that was needed! thanks bud!

From my 2 second research, the film can go in either direction? Having the film go forward and backwards give different effects. "Pinch or Stretch" I assume

great video really helps to visualize this, what was the camera you where using to create this effect

+aaronleven1 I used an usual smartphone to take the source video (Samsung galaxy, if you care), and then processed it using my own Python script. Script for making this video is here: gist.github.com/anonymous/206821d43c644a8aa4f1 And the code for making simple slit-scan photos is here: github.com/dmishin/slit-scan (I used it under Linux, compiling it for Windows could be complicated).

Cool, this is how the Doctor Who opening sequences were made in the early 70s (Jon Pertwee/Tom Baker era) very effective for that time. Awesome.

Cool work! Tried your script in 2023 from Windows, but it simply doesn't run in Python 3.7.0. File "R:\PNG\slitscan_demo_video.py", line 36 print "Stopped after processing %d images"%(idx-1) ^ SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Hello can you use this script using footage from a canon 5D?

Hello! i want to make a video like this. does it just run on linux or is it possible on a mac?
@ronritekinamatigai7 жыл бұрын
I think, it should run on mac too. You'll need python 2.x and PIL module installed. However, the script works with individual frames saved as images, not with video files. You'll need some other tool to decompose video to frames and compose result back. FFMpeg is one example of such tool.
