My grandma used to iron with something similar to that. You had take care to keep it moving constantly or risk leaving slight burn marks, or worse the entire print of the iron, on your clothing. I doubt anyone cooked food in it though for fear of transferring the smell to the clean clothes, lol.

I do not have mains power, but I do have 2 flat irons that I use. They are well over a hundred years old. I did get the local engineer to grind the bottom of them to a mirror finish, for less drag on fabric. They work very well.

We still have a couple of these irons in use in our granddad house in Sudan. Much better ironing than electric, makes a hell of upper body.

it's made in poland. my friend's a polish she showed me the same looking antique iron back when i was in england. it's almost about 200 years old too.

To be fair, that is one of those items which look sort of different, but the old ones where actually better. The only con is that they are heavier, but not that much that it is uncomfortable to use. Apart from that, they iron better than cheap electric ones. No cables, and they are much sturdier.

It's a good design but the fact that the top is not held on solidly means this could be really dangerous to use so just please be careful with it or add some sort of latch so you can't knock the holding lever out of the way
