That was truly peak Nadal, unplayable on clay. His prime went from 2005 to 2013, peaking in 2008 and 2010. The longest I've ever seen, and only interrupted because of injuries, considering Federer's prime between MC 2003-2007 and Djokovic's weird 2007-08 and 2011-RG 2016.

Nadal was vulnerable in 2005 and 2006 because he wasn’t fully melded into a champion yet but still the best clearly on clay. In 07 he wasn’t beatable but the top guys could hang with him for a couple sets and eventually bow out. 08-10 he wasn’t just unbeatable he was also unplayable. It was the highest level anyone played ever.

Alexander Kings 2005-07 Nadal wasn’t as strong. That was his main weakness. By 2008-2010 he just had that perfect blend of aggression mixed with athleticism. In 2011 he was beatable because his backhand was weaker and his serve lost a bit as well, but then in 2012 and 2013 he fine tuned a bit and dominated again. These last few years he’s absolutely mastered aggression but obviously isn’t as athletic as he once was. It’d be interesting to watch 2017 Nadal vs 2008 Nadal, but my money’s still on 2008.

I agree 2008-2013 was a golden age for tennis, and 2014-2018 were a bit of a lull in level of tennis, but nowadays, Tsitsipas, Thiem, Medvedev and Zverev are some of the most talented players with the most potential we’ve seen besides the big 4. When Nicolas Almagro said that “Rafa will win 40 of these, he’ll win till he’s 65” or something like that, Rafa still had 3 Roland Garros titles. Here were are as of 2020 and he won 10 more. I don’t doubt he can win 15. Another fun stat. In the final vs Federer he gave up a total of 4 games in 3 sets. Fast forward to 2020 again and he gave up 7 games total in the final vs Djokovic. If Federer is the Genius and Novak being the great returner could be called The Wall, Rafa is The Imposer. Rafa is not reactive, he imposes his will and commands the game. RAFA IS THE GOAT. At his peak no one stands a chance (excuse me Goran). 2008 (for me is Rafa's peak) was the year Rafa also won Wimbledon and it continued in the first month of 2009 when he won AO. If he was not injured in FO 2009 he could have ruled the tennis world 3 consecutive years 2008 (FO & W), 2009 (only AO), 2010 (FO, W, USO). Here's hoping that 2021 clay season will be another great one for Rafa as per Uncle Toni. Praying. Vamos!

the most insane thing about him is that he's a fake lefty. he writes with right hand but plays with left hand. and once i heard him saying that he could technically play with 2 forehands. but he decided to stay "traditional" and keep a backhand with 2 hands because he felt he had more control like this. for some reason, he never got the touch to play one handed backhand. he has the spinniest forehand in the game with over 2500rpms and one of the most balanced backhand with a mix of spin and speed. slightly leaning toward speed. and he has a good body balance with good reading speed which allows him to anticipate very well. after reading that don't you feel scared of this dude? i mean Almagro wasn't wrong. history speaks for itself. Rafa is something else. kinda weird to see that fast surfaces aren't his thing.

Mid-2008 Nadal is possibly the highest level of tennis ever achieved. Absolutely unplayable on clay, undefeated on grass and continued his winning streak onto hard courts. He may be on his way out now, but he can hang his hat on 14 RG titles and 22 GS titles total which is just absolutely bonkers

“When it comes to preparing to play tennis’ super-geniuses, you dream about playing Roger Federer, even in defeat delighted at the chance to tell all how great it was to be dissected with such grace. You can practice for Novak Djokovic, as there are many near-facsimiles available who play the Serb’s brand of crisp, attrition-based tennis. But nothing-no lefthander, no topspinner, no warrior-can prepare a player for what is to come versus Nadal. “I’ve never seen someone so locked in,” said Tiafoe.”

He actually dropped fewer games in 2017 (35 compared to 41 although an opponent retired during match) and no opponent even managed 5 games in a set against him so I'm tempted to call that run even more dominant

Lets be real. The opponents he faced in 2008 were way tougher than 2017. Federer, Novak, Verdasco, Ferrer and Almagro versus Benoit paire, basilashvili, out of form thiem, tired wawrinka and free walk over from Carreno Busta
@jlwebster9
@jlwebster9 2 жыл бұрын
@@adithyanaren519 yeah fair enough but when it comes to peak Rafa at the French it feels like it hardly matters who he's playing no one is gonna win a set against him. I don't know if I'd say Thiem was out of form he did beat Rafa weeks before, thrashed Djokovic the round before and hadn't dropped a set to that semi. also Wawrinka had proven to be no slouch in major finals, going 3-0 against Rafa and Djokovic. I think Rafa just has an uncanny ability to make his opponents appear out of form XD. If you just showed me the two draws I'd agree '17 looks softer, but I'd still defend it was the more impressive display of dominance.

People forget how good Nadal was at 17 years old turned pro and beat World Number 1 prime Roger Federer on hard court. Nadal in his early 20s was so far ahead of Novak and Roger at the same age. Look at the current great young players of today and they are nowhere close to being what Nadal was when he was 22 or 24.

Well, Bellucci can tell his kids that he was the only player (+Novak in semis) that was able to win 5 games in a single set to Rafa in RG 2008 (more than Roger, Almagro or Verdasco in the whole game for example). This is truly impressive
