Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico has been injured following an assassination attempt. The incident occurred while he was greeting crowds in Handlová. The attack took place after a Cabinet meeting, when multiple shots were heard before the Prime Minister's security came to his rescue. The 59-year-old populist leader has been hospitalised, his condition is said to be critical. The suspected gunman has been detained. The Kremlin-friendly Fico became Slovakia's Prime Minister for the third time last year (2023). This attack has been condemned by leaders across the world.

Kuciak had been reporting on tax-related crimes implicating high-level Slovak politicians. He earned a reputation for his tirades against journalists, and faced criminal charges in 2022 for allegedly creating a criminal group and misuse of power. Fico’s party won parliamentary elections last year on a pro-Russian and anti-American platform. He vowed to bring an end to Slovakia providing Ukraine with military support as it battled Russia’s full-scale invasion, and has argued that NATO and the United States provoked Moscow into war.
