I don’t mean to double dip, but as far as American support for Ukraine is concern, helping them is in our DNA. It is my most fervent hope that we will remember the words of a great American “ Let every nation know, whether they wish us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden , meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty. “ John F. Kennedy. I really don’t hear from anyone that those core values have changed in sixty years.

Sadly, given how, encouraged by British leaders like Tony Blair unfortunately, past American Presidents involved their country in unending unwinnable wars in Afghanistan and Middle East, and the way that for decades European countries sat under the protection of American power while not paying for their own defence and sneering about the USA, if I were an American I might feel strongly attracted to isolationism. 'Pay any price, bear any burden' was splendid rhetoric but surely not a realistic long-term policy. Having said that, I think Ukraine should be supported and that it would set a dangerous example if Russia was allowed to win.

As an American regularly listening from Hawaii, I very much appreciate the thorough aspect of your coverage of Ukraine’s extremely violent fight for its freedom. In the big picture, it wasn’t that long ago that America had to fight for its freedom - twice. It also needed foreign help in order to prevail. If it wasn’t for the thousands of Frenchmen who died during our Revolution on American soil, I might be speaking with a Yorkshire accent.

Find your podcast very informative and listen most days to it. Mr Stevens comments came as a surprise to me and as a history buff and follower of current events for nearly 50 years find his views as rather on the fringe. How big is this Lincoln group he represents? My impression it is quite small with people like Bill Crystal (former Republican commentator) as a member. I am not at present a member of a political party but have been in the past a democrat (in my youth) and a republican during my middle years. In fairness it would be good to have a person with the opposite view point on the podcast as a balance. I know no American personally who is not a supporter of Ukraine. Keep up the good reporting.

Mark these words. It should be obvious to the free world that dealing with the five dictatorships, China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and Syria, will mean isolating them to consume each other. Trade, and normalcy in any contact with these countries necessarily involves setting aside our moral values, and accepting their corruption. Let the nations of this world choose with whom each will stand, and with whom they will inevitably fall. We must begin now to disentangle our dependence upon those with whom we have such basic disagreements such as the role of the state, and it's supremacy over the people, or we will be reduced to a world of slaves serving the corrupted state and it's chosen oligarchy.

It's not just about the orange one. The whole party is corrupted. There are Trumpian figures in the party that would be far more dangerous than him and no doubt more may emerge. As bad as the orange one is, he has character flaws that keep sabotaging him. A more efficient, committed and systematic fascist would be worse. The Florida man seems like that, for example.

I agree. I’m a former strong Trump voter and I backed DeSantis until last week. II think DeSantis needs to visit and consult with NATO, Ukraine, the EU, Finland and Poland for some instruction. Whether I can vote for him after that depends on his conclusion. If he can’t support Ukraine after that, I’ll vote for Kamala or Joe, or anyone else who will oppose this isolationist streak. This election IS an existential threat to the international order and ALL democracies.

Ukraine is punching way beyond its weight already, against an enemy which prepared for decades for this war, while ukraine is pleading for game changing equipment which the west is too scared to give it. The west is giving Ukrainians aide to achieve a standstill, not outright victory, so it is rather hypocritical for u to criticise it for doing exactly wat u set it out to achieve. If the west can overcome its irrational fear of putin, and provide ukraine with the same weapons the west wd ordinarily go to war with, this war wd be over very soon, and the likes of u wd not be talking here like spoilt brats. The shoe cud be on the ither foot very soon wen putin eventually goes into NATO territory If they succeed in ukraine. Remember, putin's end goal obsession is to recreate the soviet union, and Poland, and others in NATO are his next target.

Mr Stevens knows the Republican party from the inside out. With his partners on the Lincoln Project, they offer a great reflection on what a republic should be and now unfortunately, what it is not in the MAGA world. Their video ads are now classics.

The guest lied whne he said Trump and DeSantis said they would cut off aid to Ukraine. DeSantis is my governor and I have never heard him say we should cut off aid. Trump also has never said that, in fact he has said we need to help Ukraine. This man is not working in the best interest of anyone but the Democrats.

The great weakness of the American primary election system (which has only existed for about 60 years in its current form, by the way) is that party nominees are chosen by appealing to the extreme party bases. Trump is nothing more than a publicity stunt gone wrong, stands for nothing, but has many many followers. Gov. De Santis is currently appealing to that extreme party base Trump supporters in order to split the vote. He's no Trump just because of his recent words on the Ukraine War. He knows that the plurality of Republican voters support Ukraine in this war. One year from now no one will remember Tucker Carlson's propaganda....

As an American Republican, I disagree with this guest’s view on the Republican Party. A large block of so called Christian Right voters voted for Trump in 2016 which he needed to win because he agreed to push back on “woke” agenda and promote a conservative Supreme Court. Now that that is accomplished and local leaders are holding the line on these issues, they will not vote for the self worshiping bully that Trump is. They will vote for someone more sophisticated on foreign policy which includes backing Ukraine.
