Slow Motion Flipping Cat Physics | Smarter Every Day 58

So as simple of a question as this is, it turns out to be a MAJOR POINT OF STUDY in Physics, Robotics, Space Satellite Control, Weapons Development, Biomedical Engineering, etc. It's stumped scientists and engineers since Newton's day. Here's something interesting. The cat isn't twisting his back.. he's actually BENDING it. The next video will go into great detail about what's going on there, and explain how it relates to studying the farthest points in the universe (Seriously... the fact that a cat can do this allows us to study the Universe.. no exaggeration).

That is one well behaved cat. Mine would almost certainly try to bite me despite being fairly chill and easy going. He doesn't like people messing with his feet and isn't too big a fan of being picked up. I did have a cat I could have done this with, but she was 20lbs so it would have hurt her to be held by just her legs, and she died several years ago. I was able to wear hear like a scarf and use her as a dumbbell without any complaints.

Well not necessarily. Take for example running. Now, if you've ever ran before you know the faster you run the more you have to tilt your body left or right to turn left or right, right? For example if you're running fast and want to make a left curve, you shift more body weight to your left. It's something you learn from practice, just basic motion You probably wouldn't even think about it if you tried it right now. when you do it but that's not necessarily because you knew it instinctively. (But then again, when was the last time any of us actually ran fast? I'll give you a high speed trot, that's about all I have to offer, lol. 😂) Take for example motorcycle riding or high speed bicycle riding. If you're going fast enough you learn that you don't turn the wheel left or right. But you actually push on the handle bars. If you want make a left curve you gently apply pressure to the left handle bar. And the opposite for making right curves. You don't need to know complicated laws of physics or the exact math to know if you push too hard or fast, you'll fall and get hurt.

No, I think it did. The cat flips front first, then the back in a way that uses the right amount of momentum to not overshoot the rotation. The tail is like a fine-tuner; rotating the opposite way creates a better landing without e.g. rolling sideways from extra momentum, and any excess energy can transmit to the tail instead of staying in the body area and affecting the landing (because that's pretty much the function of cat tails apart from balance). but I could be wrong about the landing, I really don't know how bobtails do it.

I noticed that, too. Well he didn't say WHO was doing the fetching. BTW, I've had many cats that really do play fetch. My husband and I had a cat, Nigel, who would play until he was panting to catch his breath and still wanted to keep going. We would make him stop for a bit to breathe, then do it some more. Other cats like to play, but they tire of it sooner and just start batting the toy around, chasing it by themselves.
