I loved this video. I’m a watchmaker. Yes that’s gunk and lint inside your watch. That gunk may cause the watch to fail eventually. I have to say this was beautifully shot. You made really insightful observations about the looseness of the wheel. All wheels have to be a little loose to allow the transfer of energy. And the chronograph hammer, which resets the chronograph seconds hand, is incredibly strong for its size. It can launch other components across the room if not assembled properly. I loved this video so much I’m sharing it with some colleagues who can’t use my high powered loupe.

@@joebaxter6895 It's easy to see how the gears could lose tiny flakes of metal and cause big problems over the years as they fly around the case due to the wearer's movements. Makes my skin crawl to think of a loose tooth-tip flopping around the escapement. The sound was false, but perfectly conveyed the reality, which is machined pieces of metal bashing into each other hundreds of thousands of times a day, for years on end.

I love the casual flex of filming your $10k watch with easily $100k worth of camera/robot equipment just because you are curious.
@vokin
@vokin 10 сағат бұрын
You're probably underestimating things by 2-3x at minimum. The robot is $100k by itself (depends on his exact config/model), and those two cameras together are probably $200k or so if bought new today. Then you've got all the lenses, lighting, the computer set up, and the mags for all the data (may not be using them in the studio, but he owns them for his on location videos). As a comparison, he recently did that video on the second channel about adding storage and his main Synology NAS enclosure is $17k just for the box (never mind the drives or the rack or the UPS or anything else), and the expansion he added was another $7k (again, just for the box). Lots of it is sponsored, but everything he does is pricey. The $10k watch, even if out of his own pocket, is nothing. He's talked about doing old videos when he still had to rent cameras and he was spending $10k per day just to rent the phantoms.

Nothing crazier than watching a bunch of tiny precision-made mechanical parts all moving in perfect harmony to create a functional timepiece. I understand electronics way better than mechanics, and it is why I think mechanical watches should not exist. They might wear down over time, they have to be constantly wound up, and they are impossible to understand for an electronics nerd like me. At least the complex digital logic going on inside of electronic watches is partially understandable to me, while the mechanical mumbo-jumbo is completely incomprehensible.

As an engineer, was confused by the 'sloppy' amount of backlash on the saw-toothed wheel until you added the Chronograph cog. Then I was flabbergasted by the reasoning/cleverness of the 2 to one-ish tooth mesh on those wheels mainly for excellent positive engagement. Impressive experiment to go along with AMAZING gear. This is not a cheap watch. I have a basic Planet Ocean and that cost enough. But there is plenty of profit in this version I'm sure. However this video and your comment got me thinking. Would the Uber expensive movements/watches (bling aside) be more handmade thus more expensive, or more accurately machined? While of course at this magnification it shows up lots of things, I wonder if those super priced watches "better made" or less violet or have less movement? But then less play means more contact and so more wear and tear? No matter, it was fascinating to watch.

when you can politely and thankfully inform a company that you bought their stuff already, but then they go and offer you something else. Thats prtetty cool. Great lot to team up with and now all the internet gets some more cracking footage to watch. Plus the commentary on what you're doing and how is cool as well. So much depth and knowledge

Gotta love the slice-of-life moments like this one. And it's not just the motion that seems violent when you hit the chronograph button. The sound when slowed down is like a tiny cannon.

yeah I don't hate guns but it is so played. Slowmo footage has mostly been people shooting things since well before youtube even existed. 😅 These swiss watch movements under super macro are so much more novel and fascinating.

This was super cool to watch. My suggestion for a potential future video would be to compare watches at different price points. Say $100, $1k, 10k, $100k, etc. and show the differences between them. Other channels have tried it but would love to see it in more detail

Don't forget they used to have to cut every gear by hand and then manually balance the mechanism rather than using precision machining, and they were still just as small and precise

Love watching these types of videos from the Slow Mo Guys, I find them fascinating. Here's one random suggestion of something you could try filming close up and in slow mo, the bubbles popping right after you pour a really fizzy drink into a glass. You know after you've poured something in too fast and it fizzes right up to the top real quick and you have to wait for it to calm down before you pour in some more drink, I bet you'd see all sorts of random sized bubbles and chain events going on at incredible speed. The fizzier the better!
