Hi, I'm constructing a water collection and treatment system. I set up a mixed sand and pea gravel test column where I mixed both together in various ratios instead of layering them so that the filtration rate is not determined by the slowest sand layer alone. I'm timing the flow through rate of different ratios to find an optimum mix.

If I get this correctly, to filter 720,000 litres of water in 1 hour, I would a filter bed of anywhere between 21,176 to 211,765 sft of surface area. Is my calculation correct?

Sand need not be replaced often. It can be regenersted through a back wash pumping system ,ie puming fresh water under pressure in reverse direction by an exclusive back wash pump periodically ie once in a fortnight Or in a month.
