Your title "Slow stitching" got me curious because in my 75 yrs I'd never heard this term. I had to chuckle to myself when I saw what you were doing and decided "slow stitching" was just a new term for hand sewing and/or decorative sewing that I've been doing for years. Your piece is so cute and reminds me of when I was a child using scraps of material from my mom [who made all our clothes] to make pieces like this when I was learning to sew. Everything old is new again and that's a good thing. Thanks Nina and hugs, you've made my day!

Yup, when I first heard the term slow stitching I was intrigued. Imagine my surprise when I discovered it was just hand embroidery that I'd been doing for close to 55 years. I guess this generation just lets machines do all the work. I like the Japanese way of actually learning from elders so the old arts and crafts are not lost. When the Zombie Apocalypse hits, the survivors are gonna need us - LOL!

Hello Marlene, how lovely that your Mom made all your clothes and taught you to sew with the scraps. My Mom was a great seamstress as well, but I didn’t inherit her talent 💕

Back in my quilting days, Nina, I did a fair amount of slow stitching collage pieces, which was a relaxing craft when I took a break from quilting. I sold my 16’ Gammill quilting machine a decade ago, which I used to quilt for several award winning art quilters. This is when I entered the world of mixed media and I haven’t looked back. Maybe, I may have to create a small fabric collage to work on, when I’m away from my art room. I still have all the stuff! Your piece is a nice example for folks new to the craft or want something manageable to do. Looking forward to seeing what folks do on your FB.

Welcome to the world of slow stitch! Your project is so cute. You can separate floss by holding the end between your thumb and forefinger land just pulling out one strand at a time. It will bunch up, but just straighten it out before you pull the next thread. The threads lay flatter and have better coverage when separated as singles. Thanks for sharing this. Happy creating!

Hi Nina, thank you for sharing this, it's lovely. I don't have a sewing machine, so I hand stitch all the time(clothing alterations etc), and although it's usually a chore, this kind of stitching is much more fun and enjoyable. I love what you've done today. Your videos are always uplifting and great to watch, as you always do different forms of art work, it keeps it inte resting. You're an inspiration to all of us. Textiles can be missed in the art world. There is always a big debate between Art & craft... Take a look at the amazing artist Yinka Shonibare. The easiest way to divide embroidery thread is to cut the six-strand amount you need, then take one end of the cut piece and separate the number of strands you need (just half an inch or so). Take those threads you need in one hand and gently pull them upwards while keeping the other stands as a whole in your other hand. The needed threads should glide upwards out of the unneeded stands held in the other hand. Long explanation for a simple professional procedure that is effective 100% of the time. No tangles, no knots. (Give a look at the YT vid by Easy Sewing for Beginners "How to Separate Embroidery Floss and Preparing Your Thread for Hand Embroidery" - go directly to 5:26 for the demo.) Love your beginner piece!

To separate threads it's better not to have too long a length - I 'hold' one end in my mouth while splitting off 2 or 3 strands in one hand & the rest in the other, pulling them apart. I have no idea if that makes any sense to anyone but me!
