Nice to see a proper review at last of this lens! I totally agree: I got mine just before Christmas after waiting what seemed like an age (high demand and underestimated supply). We all knew that the AF-D 20mm f/2.8 needed a successor, but the nice surprises were the f/1.8 aperture, the 77mm filter thread (ideal), and the latest technologies (nano coat, af-s, ED and aspherical elements, and so on). I had been hankering after the 14-24 for a long time, but, having rented it and while loving it, I didn't love the weight, the front heaviness (not brilliant for when attaching to a skytracker), and feel it needs a tripod mount on it to balance better). This 20mm weighs it at 350 grams or so (featherweight to the 1kg 14-24), and a stop faster. No, the 20mm doesn't go out to 14mm, but I asked myself... Do I really need to go out that far most of the time? No was the answer, so I opted for this. I am annoyed at the slight play in the focus if I am honest, but it is not a deal breaker as all the other talents of this lens are great: the sunstars are gorgeous, the bokeh is nice, it is razor sharp across most of the frame, contrasty, and it isn't an "in your face lens", so doesn't draw attention to itself when you are shooting out on the streets, for example. Great lens, though - as you mentioned - the Sigma 24mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art must be just round the corner now, and I know I will hanker after thank being a proud owner of the 35, which is - quite simply - the best autofocusing 35mm lens on the market, and also great for astro photography

Great review and I am glad I was able to find this. I have a 16-35 F4 and do you think it will be a good investment if I get the 20mm? I want to do more landscape and long exposure. Also the star burst is awesome.. did you do anything on the Post Processing? Hope you can help.

I really love the sunstar the 20mm produces. Do you know if there are other wide angle Nikon lenses that make similar sunstars?

I would like to say as well that there is absolutely no darkening in the corner after you've put a filter on it. I think it is a nice little lens easy to carry and pretty good value for $ when you look at the image quality. The old D lens is not comparable to the new one. I had it as well, it's just not the same. The "D" is cheaper than the "G", made in J versus made in PRC. I can tell you the made in PRC lens delivers a better image quality overall. I believe it 's worth the price increase.

Great review. Do you have a recommendation for a similar lens for the non-Nikon people? I'm now shooting with a Sony A7 II.
@MatthewSaville10 жыл бұрын
Quite honestly, *****, if you're shooting on Sony then you get the fantastic benefit of getting to easily adapt Nikon lenses! Get yourself an aperture-controlled adapter and slap it on. The only other good option, for astro-landscapes that is, would be the Rokinon 24mm f/1.4 which does have direct adaptation to the Sony A7 mount. So far, Sony has been very adamant about NOT delivering lenses like this, which is a huge bummer IMO.
@BobDeLellisPhoto10 жыл бұрын
Matthew Saville Thanks for your reply. I've been shooting Canon for the past few years and I've been experimenting with adapters on my L lenses. Sony was very smart in releasing the mount data so others could make adapters, which makes it much easier for those of us shooting with other brands to more easily make the switch, without having to completely divorce one brand and marry Sony. For many, that is just not financially possible. AF seems to be the truly the week point of adapting lenses. Under a controlled situation where you have time to MF, it's 100% fine. Sports, events, etc...not so much. Sony has included Focus Peaking a MF assist, so focusing manually is VERY easy and actually quite fun. I really looking forward to adapting Leica and Voigtlander lenses on the A7 II. It seems one of the up sides to extreme wide-angle lenses is the DOF is so deep, there is a lot more room for error. I've been seriously looking at a Rokinon, as the reviews of image quality, especially for the price have been extremely favorable. Do you have experience with the Rokinon and does it have have that cool starburst effect you got from the Nikon? If not, getting a Nikon to E mount adapter might be a great option, as you suggested. MF for landscape photography seems to be NO problem at all. Thanks again. I REALLY enjoyed your review. It was very well done and the images are awesome. :)

It does not look like you had the correct lens profile. the vignetting and overall brightness is counteracted far too much. the borders look brighter than the center afterwards and the image looks overexposed

I bought this lens a short while ago. I compared it directly with a 14-24 F2.8G at 2.8 and I must say the two lenses are producing nearly identical results, I would say the colors are slightly better on the 14-24. I had the 24mm F1.4G and this little lens is not far from the 24mm in term of image rendering. It is NOT AS GOOD in my opinion as the 24mm F1.4G but pretty close, half the weight if you are happy with a stop less and a wider angle.

why do you have sharpening at 150?
@MatthewSaville10 жыл бұрын
Shaul Boilov, with my Nikon sensors I prefer a high-amount, low-intensity sharpening technique. Notice that the radius is at 0.5 or very close, and the detail slider is also at the minimum (zero) or very close to it. When you shoot flawlessly sharp lenses with perfect technique, this is the best way to get the finest detail out of your images, without them looking like they're shot on a digital camera. I'll make another video soon in which I demonstrate this technique in extremely large print sizes, and you'll really notice the difference! =Matt=

Someone else brought this up, but the strange flare looks like the D750 issue.
@MatthewSaville10 жыл бұрын
I'll be looking into it, but the D750 flare issue is a flare shadow issue, and this flare is not shadowed, it's simply there. Trust me, I looked at dozens of sample images, and none of them had shadowing. If I discover otherwise, I'll update this review!
@randy.wentzel10 жыл бұрын
I trust you looked for sure. While your flare issue didn't match exactly, it did have a sharp cutoff which is reminiscent of the other D750 flare issues. Nikon keeps problems as hushed as possible, so you might be seeing a different version of the same problem. That's all. In the end I hope it's just unique to the lens of course. Cheers - Randy

Is the weird flare you are talking in your review could be cause by the Nikon D750 flare issue?
@MatthewSaville10 жыл бұрын
I'll try the lens on other cameras and let you know, Guy Gauthier , however I suspect that it is not the problem, as that was an issue with flare shadowing, not flare itself.
