Dude, Ma Persian Ninja cuttin' through the crap with that lightning fast ninja sword right to the meat of the matter. Beautifully said and right to the point. Again, "WHY ARE YOU NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT?" Ok, well that being said great share and please...please...will you please wear your ninja suit for your next video. Just sayin'. Edit: Hmmm I'm going to just throw my ninja star ND filters at you for not getting why we as Landscape Photographers wait for hours just to get that one shot.

Totally agree as a graphic designer. I tell my clients it's not about you or those you work with. I was hired to engage their business with their audience. Ultimately the audience/customer is what buys into the business brand. As a graphic designer I communicate the brand to an audience, not the business owner or other designers.

Thanks Pye for another great posting, I love watching your videos and always feel inspired. You are so right, it took me years to realise that clients don't care how you got the image, it's about the result and their experience with you.

Very well said Pye, you are right on the mark. I have had friends who are professionals lament over the "moms with cameras" taking their business...my comment back to them was something I heard a while ago...those folks going to "Mom" are not going to be your clients - ever; so you should concentrate on what you do best and work at staying one step ahead of the competition. Another note, the photographer I worked as a second shooter for weddings was reluctant to move to digital (we shot every medium format on film, and he used the RB-67). His worry was he wouldn't get the quality from digital that he got from film. Once he switched, slowly, he realized that wasn't the case and they went straight digital, even in the studio. You mention about the naysayers, I am sure that was happening ever since George Eastman was able to put a camera into the common mans hands. It seems when ever there is an advance in new technology, there are those who refuse to budge and move forward. I am happy that I am not one of those (except may for all my appliances being on my network). Thank you for a very informative video...I appreciated it.

Very good points!! The part about getting critique from a friend on a photograph is spot on. When people object to the “non genuine” photography I tend to do. I say if it looks good on your wall, or on social media than that’s all I care about.

Thank you Pye. I have thought and said what you say in this video for so long. Even the Masters from hundreds of years ago manipulated their paintings with paint, brushes and other techniques. I am sure they didn't get canvas with images on it. Adams did it in a darkroom by manipulations of light and dark. Modern times...modern tools. When I started out I had the photographers I dealt with saying things to me about having to use certain settings, rules and all of that. My question was always"do you like my images?". When they said yes, I thanked them and smiled, just like I thank you and smile because I guess I wasn't wrong.

I don't use presets, but I do sync photos from a shoot that have the same exposure and do the global editing to all, then do each photo individually; News organizations and news papers allow very little if any editing. The photos have to maintain their integrity because viewer trust is essential. Beyond news and editorial, various other types allow more editing. Conceptual and illustrations can use whatever editing is necessary. I often change skies in landscapes and backgrounds in portraits. But I do almost no editing for photojournalism. It depends on what you're doing.

I'd add to this with that it's not enough to say it's simply all about the result and not the process. I'd argue that it's about being able to deliver results consistently. And to be able to do that, you must understand the process. Any novice photographer will get lucky and make some great images from time to time, but it takes knowledge of the process to be able to make great images time and time again under any conditions. This is what I see beginners struggle with most in the photography forums that I'm a part of.

I think those who push beyond and do what the average person can’t will set themselves apart and be more successful. In the film days it took knowledge to get amazing shots that the average Joe with a 110 couldn’t hope to capture. With digital anyone can get good results so the professional needs to become more proficient with editing to set themselves apart. With each advancement in technology we have to continually push ourselves to do what others won’t do. It’s those shooters who refuse to adapt and grow who get left behind.

If I show you one photo, can you tell me with which camera it was captured ? Full frame/crop or Nikon / canon / Sony / Fuji ? How did I edit? it , etc. One answer is for all is No. It concludes everything that what matters is the final result.

Pye, @5:11 I have been saying this for years about a Photograph. I feel like you stoled this from me even about a photojournalist who chooses what to photograph. Well, the end of the photograph is all that matters I don't think using someone else's preset is right for me right now. I feel like editing helps create part of your style to a point or I would shoot in JPEG instead of RAW. For new photographers and old photographers yes embrace the technology. As for new photographers, Learning is part of the process from before they press the shutter to editing the final photo. Using someone else's presets is taking away a big part of learning how to edit and create part of your style from editing.

Film limits you to 1 ISO, 1 Color balance, either black or white, and other things until you change the roll of film. There's no switching around from shot to shot. And, the darkroom requires light-proofing a room and disposing of chemicals legally. There's none of that with digital. Also, Dorothea Lang created her iconic dust bowl photos with vastly inferior film cameras. To paraphrase Frank Lloyd Wright, in great photography form follows content.

My comment on no editing, it's impossible. As soon as you take the picture, the camera shows you an edited image, and as soon as you bring it into lightroom or any other program, it's edited, the software HAS to edit it in order to show you an image. It's impossible NOT to. How much you edit it after the import into software is a totally different subject. I prefer to do my work in camera, more time taking pictures which is why I'm in the business, and less time on the computer.

Here’s one thing I don’t like. I don’t like when a photographer says I took this picture and the picture was actually just a bridge and he added a tornado and lightning bolts to it and said he took the picture. I consider that creative photography editing and I don’t think there is nothing wrong with that type of photography editing and I love seeing pictures like that. But don’t tell me you took that picture because in two seconds later you would have been swooped up in the air by the tornado and not lived to show me this picture. Lol

I'm torn on this. I am on board with using available tools to get the look you (the creative) is going for. But I also feel (at least for photography) that the science and emotion behind it, are being lost in a world where anyone can rely on adding a few filters to an image and getting hundreds or thousands of likes. I think photography as an art isn't being respected as much. I've seen too many images out there with horrible compositions, bad exposure, etc., that are treated as if they are all-time great images. And I'll spare anyone who wishes to call me old-fashioned: OK, boomer. Now that we can remove that comment as a solid response, please understand again my comment. I appreciate the heck out of the tools available today that help with digital imagery. They are phenomenal and can do things to make some really creative moments. But conversely, the tools are becoming crutches in many cases, so I feel the understanding of what goes into a photograph from the viewer's eye, is lacking these days, or is ignored--thus devaluing the true art of photography.

Ahahahaha..."Dont use presets!😣...🤔"why?"I think what ppl are are referring to actions for retouching instead of " by hand" actions are easy to use but ONLY if you know PS basics...ive just learned some PS basics and it takes alot to teach an old dog new tricks so i dont feel one bit bad about using actions to take hrs off editing time!!! At first i thought oh i should keep it natural looking and natural light real skin body shape ect....in 2 years ive completely changed my mind after working on "real"...people want to look their best especially when paying for a shoot...so yea definitely cant keep up with the industry without using the tools that the rest of the world uses!!
