I love how they have subtly different designs!! Hunter is more angular than Survivor whereas Monk is more round! And Spearmaster is SO angular, almost alien- suits them well as a genetically modified weapon!

Yes, the plot is very dark. Spoilers below. These guys are more or less messengers (even if they don't know it) between the gods of their world. The gods are trying to figure out how to die because death isn't possible in the setting, meerly resulting in waking up in a new cycle. The end of each character's story involves them going to the void at the bottom of the world and "ascending", freeing them of the cycles.

The game is brutal, but also genuinely beautiful at times, and the world is amazing from a technical perspective. Some of the slugcats can achieve quite happy endings, and few of them have flat-out bad endings. Also if you’re a sucker for lore like me you’ll love it.

All 3 of these groups fit into categories. - the 3 non-DLC scugs (Self-explanatory) - the moderately difficult scugs (Gourmand takes a really long time and doesn’t enjoy green lizards, Artificer hates going through Metropolis, Rivulet can be a bit confusing to find where to go) - the really really hard scugs (Spearmaster isn’t as broken as you’d think and hates Waterfront Facility + pearl escort mission, Saint has no defenses whatsoever, Sofanthiel rolls a nat 1 every second of its existence) And then there’s Watcher, who will exist in 3-5 business days

Looking through the lore, every scug is technically synthetic, originating from a Purposed Organism designed to clean pipes. Spearmaster was purposed from them to act as a messenger, and the blueprints for the slugcat are visible when LttM is scanning Spears in their campaign.
