While many people deal with slugs in their own personal gardens, farmers can face this slimy menace from time to time. Slugs can have pretty severe effects if they hatch around the same time corn and soybeans emerge, and you can see slugs eat leaf tisses, with the impact can be pretty high, resulting in stand loss. They’re also a bit more difficult to deal with, since they are not susceptible to soil applied insecticides or seed treatment insecticides. Pioneer Field Agronomist Gary Brinkman gives an overview on this pest, shows the damage they can cause, and gives advice on management practices, including slug baits, tile drainage, and applications of 28% UAN solutions.
