Thank you, Red, for this video of trains that you documented on 16 November 2024 at Cedar Falls, Iowa and on 17 November 2024 at Montour, Iowa. It was a surprise to see those short CNW covered hopper cars with CNW reporting marks. I have not seen cars like that in videos for a long time. It is nice to see that they are still in use and in decent shape. That Hazmat Placard with the 3007 number is for environmentally hazardous solids. (Posted on 28 November 2024 at 2257 CST.)

@thomasmackowiak You're welcome Thomas! The CNW short hoppers were a real treat. I remember seeing those cars in some South Dakota videos. Mainly out of the Black Hills.

Wow great catches , when CN takes over completely of the iowa northern will they still have the speed restriction once past the bridge or haven't you heard.

@davidpierce1837 Thanks David P! That's a good question. I would guess the speed restriction would stay. Would be nice to see it lifted.

The Iowa Northern with a different Power configuration and certainly heavy on tank cars. That was the one thing about the seasonal anhydrous ammonia moving when you really don't expect it. CN had enough tankers to make an ethanol train and actually very little regular Freight. Well no coal trains and no priority Intermodal but enough regular Freight to keep the tracks busy. Those little yipper dogs are almost like air horns they have different tones and pitches. There is a substantial group of clean TGSX covered hoppers which used to stand for Texas Gulf Sulfur and then reduced to just Texas Gulf. Those are the cars for carrying soda ash from Wyoming. The best train was that eastbound with all those CNW small covered hoppers along with quite a few from Mopac as well as that large number of system coil cars. The only thing in the back of my mind and I hope it's not true is that they're headed for resale or scrap. While they weren't lined out it is odd to see them in such large numbers. It did look like some fresh gray paint on the CW Colorado &Wyoming Flats. Hopefully you and the family had a good Thanksgiving. A cold one tonight so stay warm

@paulbergen9114 Gonna miss the Iowa Northern power Paul. The farmers were really laying down the anhydrous last week around here! The yippee dogs have to be crazy loud in that house. Those CNW cars were a treat. I remember seeing old videos with those short covered hoppers in the Black Hills. I'm guessing they hauled bentonite when out there. Plenty of food today and the Woodstove is stoked in the garage👍
@paulbergen911413 сағат бұрын
@redsiowatrainvideos6645 yes a lot of it was Bentonite that went up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where are they used in the production of making taconite pellets. Also there was a big cement plant up there and they kept getting shorted on cars or ones that were in.good shape so a group of them also wound up there
@sandyg922817 сағат бұрын
Those anhydrous ammonia tanks might bound for the Koch Plant between Duncomb and Ft Dodge.

Question Red, first I really enjoy your videos I live up in Cedar Falls and always enjoy the old power that Iowa Northern uses. ??? How fast would you get guess UP speed is going thru town and second about how many trains per day ? Thanks. Terry
@redsiowatrainvideos664517 сағат бұрын
@hongs8867 Thanks Terry! I'd guess the priority trains average around 40 to 50 mph through town. I've seen higher speeds but not real common. 25 to 30 trains a day for an average kn that line. Some of the empty West bound coal trains really boogie👍Track speed is 70mph there.
