Slugs, Switchers, MACs and More! 2023 Cumberland Deadline Update!

This has to be one of the most rewarding flights our drone has ever taken! The infamous Cumberland Deadlines definitely lived up to their reputation! The title doesn’t even begin to describe the massive variety of locomotives in here, which is where this lovely description comes in! While there were lots of new locomotives for us in here, there were a handful of familiar faces too (will link below)! The majority of units in here were, as expected, EMDs, which have become a rarity in road trains in response. In the mix was one of very few, an SD60M! Retired by CSX several years back, this is a breed that’s hard to find, with only a handful scattered among various CSX deadlines. Another unit, this time one of a kind, is a YN1 locomotive, though not technically a CSX locomotive anymore 😅 GCK #7496, an EMD SD40, has made its round for sure! Serving initially for the Western Maryland Railroad, its life as a CSX locomotive began with a transfer to bowl trim service in Louisville, KY. Some years later, it was purchased by the Georges Creek Railway of Western Maryland, who later relinquished it to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, interestingly enough! Its journey seems to have ended here as it rusts away in Cumberland, MD. Also in the mix was TORC SD40-2 #996, which was purchased off of, and later returned to CSX by the Toledo Ore Company! In addition to these buried treasures was another rarity, an MT6 slug, #1015, rebuilt from a Penn Central ALCO RSD12 locomotive! A wonderful video documentation but sad seeing all that great older power especially the EMDs wasting away. I wished we could bring all them EMDs back out and pout all the new GE Junkers in that yard instead. Enjoyed watching and wishing we still could see most of them back out running. No actually incorrect on December 23 2023, those reactivated dash 8s went back into storage along with a few dash 9s.

@@rfpproductions1836 Not all of them went back at the end of 2023, just a few, the other remained active until they were stored in January February or March. And April was kinda sad with none active, until May with 2 active and still remains that way.

Amazing catches RF&P! Its very sad to see some of these amazing units there, espically CSX 7777. I was shocked when I saw that Lucky Dash-8 in the deadline the same day you guys were there. I'm also surprised CSX 7778 & a couple of C40-8WM's are stored there too (Not to mention that 7778 & 7788 are the only two Dash-8's in the YN3C. What's more, I remember catching 8763 back when I was at Cumberland for the 3rd & 4th time. I also wasn't expecting 4814. 4814 was suppose to be at Huntington, but I (think) later found out that Huntington was almost filled to capacity and 4814 was transferred to Cumberland until Huntington was ready. It's also sad to see some of these Reactivated Dash-8's & -9's heading back to storage (Possibly due to BOTH the CM44/ Flared SD70MAC Rebuilds/ upgrades). But TWO locomotvies I will never forget to this day are MT6 1015 (Caught it during my 7th-12th trips) & GCK SD40 7496 (Caught it during my 2nd-4th, 8th-12th trips). Speaking of my 12th trip to Cumberland & like I said before, I'll probably upload my POV sometime around February. Hope you guys have a Happy New Year & Keep up the amazing work!

When did 7848, 7813, 7851 and 7793 and 7791 7787 7849 7860 7876 7877 7778 7777 7794 7809 7883 7896 7901 get thrown into storage! I thought it was January 2nd 2024 when they announced the retirement or storage! Including 7816?

Why are these engines not working they're still workable to let them sit there and not be used is a waste of money too me when they can be used in service

@@claudea.thomas5381 CSX has newer, more efficient locomotives that they use instead. These older locomotives, while still potentially usable, have had their usefulness run its course
